“I Really Like The Idea Of Being The Source Of Change”: The Perspectives Of Black And Latine Youth Experiencing Low Income About How Personal Change Occurs In Out-Of-School Group Programs, Kevin Miller Sep 2024

“I Really Like The Idea Of Being The Source Of Change”: The Perspectives Of Black And Latine Youth Experiencing Low Income About How Personal Change Occurs In Out-Of-School Group Programs, Kevin Miller

Dissertations

Structured out-of-school programs (OSPs) can be contexts in which youth can be producers of their own positive change (Eccles & Gootman, 2002). However, despite a considerable body of research documenting the benefits of participating in OSPs, there is a lack of knowledge about how youth of color in low-income communities define positive personal change in OSP settings. As a result, many OSPs and interventions designed for youth of color rely on adult practitioners’ or researchers’ perspectives of the change process, which may weaken program impact and fail to holistically meet youths’ developmental needs. This study uses a critical realist scientific …

Methods: A sequential mixed methods design was completed with descriptive, and correlation statistical analysis completed. In addition, person-time fixed level analysis was …

Assessing The Role Of Psychological Self-Sufficiency And Organizational Factors In Achieving Economic Self-Sufficiency Among Low-Income Populations, Alanna Jeeyoung Shin Sep 2024

Assessing The Role Of Psychological Self-Sufficiency And Organizational Factors In Achieving Economic Self-Sufficiency Among Low-Income Populations, Alanna Jeeyoung Shin

Dissertations

Low-income populations in the United States face complex challenges amid persistent high levels of poverty, income inequality, and child poverty (OECD, 2023; OECD, 2024; Smeeding & Thévenot, 2016; U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2023b). Influenced by neoclassical economic theory and human capital theory, work-first initiatives like Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) focus on fostering individual change by enhancing employable skills (Kim, 2010). These programs predominantly emphasize personal responsibility as a strategy for reducing poverty. However, multilayered barriers remain that hinder the achievement of economic self-sufficiency (Hong et al., 2014). To challenge the prevailing approach focusing on the individual level, …

Clinical Social Workers, Telemental Health And The Covid-19 Pandemic, Juli Chaffee Sep 2024

Clinical Social Workers, Telemental Health And The Covid-19 Pandemic, Juli Chaffee

Dissertations

As a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic, and due to the shelter in place order that most states required, licensed clinical social workers (CSW’s) were forced to switch from in person services to telemental health services almost overnight. Many did so without previous training, adequate technology, a confidential office, or professional support. While there is a growing body of research regarding the increased use of telemental health in the mental health field during COVID-19, there is minimal research which narrows in what it was like for the CSW’s who made this transition. The purpose of this study was to better …

Imposter Participants In Online Qualitative Interviews: A Protocol For Trauma-Informed And Equitable Decision-Making, L. B. Klein, Caro Cruys Sep 2024

Imposter Participants In Online Qualitative Interviews: A Protocol For Trauma-Informed And Equitable Decision-Making, L. B. Klein, Caro Cruys

The Qualitative Report

Imposter participants are an emerging concern in qualitative research due to the recent increase in online recruitment and virtual interviews. Unfortunately, there is limited guidance on how to address imposter participants in an equitable, trauma-informed way. To bridge this gap, we share imposter participant red flags, challenges, and a protocol that provides questions to ask and possible activities to engage in throughout the research process from conceptualization through findings dissemination. We ground this guidance in examples from our recent study with LGBTQ+ (e.g., lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) survivors of sexual and intimate partner violence.

Black, Indigenous, And People Of Color's Experiences Of Discrimination In Psychoanalytic Professional Organizations In The Usa: Results Of A Thematic Analysis Of Interview Data, Carter Carter, Rory Crath, Christine Tronnier, Harshita Bhargava, Alison Espinosa-Setchko, Julia Galeota, Q. Garcia-Geary, Tara Lasheen, Diana Sencherey, Rachel Steindler

School for Social Work: Faculty Publications

This article reviews the results of a qualitative study of Black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC)'s experiences of discrimination in psychoanalytic professional organizations (PPOs) in the USA. The authors used thematic analysis to analyze the transcripts of semi-structured interviews with n = 10 self-identified BIPOC with prior experience in PPOs, including psychoanalytically-oriented graduate programs, psychoanalytic institutes and other training programs, and professional membership organizations across the United States. A key finding is that a significant majority of interviewees (n = 9) reported experiencing discrimination in these organizations, per their own definitions of the term “discrimination,” and described these experiences …

Using Simulation To Train Service Providers In Responding To Intimate Partner Violence (Ipv) And Trauma, Sarah Tarshis, Jennifer H. Mcquaid, Mariama Diallo, Stephanie L. Baird, Kenta Asakura

School for Social Work: Faculty Publications

This study used simulation-based research (SBR) to gain a better understanding of how intimate partner violence (IPV) service providers engage in trauma-informed practice in a simulated session with a standardized patient. Our qualitative study recruited 18 IPV service providers from Canada and the United States. Each participant engaged in a virtual 30-minute case-based simulated session with an actor portraying a survivor of IPV experiencing vulnerabilities related to violence and immigration status. Following each simulation, IPV service providers participated in a 30- to 45-minute reflective dialogue. The data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. Identified themes included: (a) simulation builds trauma-informed …

Promoting Community Responsive, Trauma-Informed Consultation Practices In Rural School Communities: A Mixed Methods Exploratory Sequential Approach, Elly Q. Maras

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rural youth are placed at greater risk for experiencing adverse childhood experiences, developing mental health disorders, and dying by suicide when compared with the general population. Due to a widespread need for better access to mental health treatment, many are left untreated. These concerns are often exacerbated by individual and systemic risk factors that are endemic to rural communities. Rural school districts are being asked to deliver mental health services to students, with school psychologists as key stakeholders. Though school psychologists are uniquely qualified to support this need, graduate programs typically do not provide adequate coursework and training on consultation …

The Experience Of Pet Ownership During Transitional Housing Process, Kathryn Holden Aug 2024

The Experience Of Pet Ownership During Transitional Housing Process, Kathryn Holden

Student Capstone Papers

Twenty-five percent of people experiencing homelessness have pets, but few transitional housing programs allow pets (Rhoades et al., 2015); therefore, there is a gap in the literature about the experience of pet ownership during the transitional housing process. This study aimed to explore pet owners' experiences at a transitional housing site in San Diego County. The student interviewed two current dog owners and four recent dog owners. All participants prioritized their pets because of the strong bond they shared with their pet. They described their relationship between themselves and their dog to be stronger than their relationships with family members …

Nephrology Social Worker’S Caseload Sizes And Levels Of Burnout, Melissa Renee Prelow Aug 2024

Nephrology Social Worker’S Caseload Sizes And Levels Of Burnout, Melissa Renee Prelow

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

No studies focused on nephrology social workers’ dialysis settings, years of experience, caseload sizes, and job burnout were found during the literature search. The purpose of this quantitative correlational design study conducted via survey methodology with nephrology social workers was to examine the independent variables of dialysis settings, years of experience, and caseload sizes as predictors of the levels of burnout, the dependent variable. The Maslach Burnout Inventory Health Services Survey (MBI-HSS) measured burnout as emotional exhaustion and depersonalization in addition to personal accomplishment. The correlational research design involved using descriptive statistics to describe the demographic (gender, race), independent (dialysis …

Ot’S Role In Facilitating Foster Youth's Transition To College And Career Exploration, Stacey Tang, Amy Lyons-Brown

Summer 2024 OTD Capstone Symposium

Foster youths often face numerous adversities, limiting their occupational performance and ability to transition into adulthood, specifically regarding career and education. This poster explores the role of Occupational Therapy (OT) in supporting these youths as they age out of foster care, particularly focusing on college and career exploration. Using the Person-Environment-Occupation-Performance (PEOP) and KAWA River models, a needs assessment was conducted in collaboration with Foster Love, a non-profit organization. The assessment revealed gaps in resources and support for foster youths, leading to the development of workshops that foster self-reflection, emotional regulation, and goal setting as they navigate their transition into …

This study examined burnout and vicarious trauma among mental health providers in New Mexico given the high need population and low access to resources. This qualitative study, employed individual interviews, examined the lived experiences of seven mental health providers who are currently employed in the state of New Mexico in order to better understand the impact of burnout, vicarious trauma, and vicarious resilience. Inclusion criteria for participants included providing mental health services to children and families …

Themes In Help-Seeking Of Female Military Sexual Assault Survivors, Priscilla Phan Aug 2024

Themes In Help-Seeking Of Female Military Sexual Assault Survivors, Priscilla Phan

Doctoral Dissertations

While large efforts have been made to address military sexual assault, there are still barriers in the help-seeking journey that need attention. This study aimed to examine barriers and facilitators to formal and informal help-seeking behaviors and to understand the role of stigma in survivors' help-seeking behaviors for female military sexual assault survivors. Through semi-structured interviews, the study explored the help-seeking experiences and mental health sequela of fourteen female military sexual assault survivors. This study focused on cis-gender women over the age of eighteen who experienced a military sexual assault, by another military service member, while on active-duty. Women shared …

Co-Occurring Disorders In The Juvenile Justice System: Clinicians’ Attitudes, Skills, And Knowledge, Wendi Watson Aug 2024

Co-Occurring Disorders In The Juvenile Justice System: Clinicians’ Attitudes, Skills, And Knowledge, Wendi Watson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders have been found to contribute to delinquent and criminal behavior leading to higher rates of incarceration. Although this problem is increasingly recognized within the juvenile justice system and the social work profession, very little is known about how knowledgeable social workers are with respect to treating co-occurring disorders. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between social workers' clinical experience (i.e., years of experience), level of education, and type of licensure and perceived clinical competence when serving youth with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders in the juvenile justice …

Relationship Between Cultural Barriers, Adaptation Mechanisms, And Quality Of Life Among Congolese Refugees, Ndasi Zialo Aug 2024

Relationship Between Cultural Barriers, Adaptation Mechanisms, And Quality Of Life Among Congolese Refugees, Ndasi Zialo

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Refugee cultural backgrounds are different from the primary culture in which they live. Cultural barriers have been identified as contributing factors to disparities in mental health services among refugees in the host country. They face racism, discrimination, and marginalization that impede their access to mental health services compared to the host populations. The Western model of mental health services was developed for the unique needs of the European refugees and could not always meet the needs of the non-European refugee populations. The lack of culturally specific mental health services creates disparities in mental health services that affect the quality of …

Teaching Forensic Paraphilia In Undergraduate And Graduate Human Sexuality: A Note From The Field, Nafees Alam Aug 2024

Teaching Forensic Paraphilia In Undergraduate And Graduate Human Sexuality: A Note From The Field, Nafees Alam

Social Work Faculty Publications

Part of being a social work professor is teaching human sexuality, including paraphilias. Approaching such emotionally charged topics intellectually can be particularly difficult when teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels in higher education. Students coming from different parts of the nation, different parts of the planet; students coming from a diverse array of ethical and ideological backgrounds, can take these lessons in different ways, ways in which professors may never intend. Employing a point-counterpoint philosophy to explore the ethics related to sexual diversity and inclusion can encourage students to consider counterpoints to their points of view, focused not on agreement, …

Service Dogs: A Catalyst For Post-Traumatic Growth Among Military Veterans With Ptsd, Matthew P. Knight Aug 2024

Service Dogs: A Catalyst For Post-Traumatic Growth Among Military Veterans With Ptsd, Matthew P. Knight

People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice

The conclusion of the war in Afghanistan in 2021 has left a significant portion of veterans grappling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), with estimates suggesting 23% of post-9/ 11 veterans are affected. Traditional psychotherapies, while effective, often see high attrition rates due to stigma-related barriers, underscoring the need for complementary approaches that resonate with the unique psychosocial needs embedded in military veteran culture.

Historically, research on psychiatric service dogs has focused predominantly on PTSD symptom alleviation. This conceptual article introduces a novel focus on their role in promoting positive psychological change known as post-traumatic growth (PTG), a topic that has …

The Invisible Co-Afflicted: Caregivers Of Rectal Cancer Survivors, Qi Chen Aug 2024

The Invisible Co-Afflicted: Caregivers Of Rectal Cancer Survivors, Qi Chen

Publications and Research

Formal survivorship care after successful rectal cancer treatment is lacking, and this burden falls to caregivers. Caregivers, many of whom have no healthcare training, are asked to take on management of bowel function difficulties, ostomy care, while providing tangible, emotional, and financial support for rectal cancer survivors. The rise of young-onset rectal cancer also adds new survivorship care needs, such as family planning and returning to workplace, which compounds existing caregiver responsibilities and burdens.

Burma Refugees’ Migratory And Resettlement Experiences And Health Practices, Eunice E. Kim

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Many refugees from Burma (renamed Myanmar) resettled in the U.S. in recent years; however, they are largely unknown to the American public care system. This dissertation aimed to increase understanding of their unique existence and life trajectory and provide a groundwork to identify an effective way to assist their quest to secure health and well-being in their host communities. Guided by Max Weber's Interpretive Sociology and Ideal Type construct principles, this study investigated the Burma refugee’s particular sociodemographic characteristics, narratives of enduring refugee debilitating conditions across multiple contexts, and life adaptations. The sampled Burma refugees comprised 36 former and current …

Comorbid dementia complicates cancer therapy decision-making in older adults. We aimed to synthesize the recent literature (< 5 >years) on the challenges associated with cancer therapy decision-making among older people living with dementia (PLWD) and their caregivers. Of the 20,763 references, 8767 had their title and abstract screened, and eight met the inclusion criteria. Six studies were qualitative, one study employed mixed methods, and one study was quasi-experimental. Most studies were conducted in the UK (89%) and reported homogeneity in race and geography. Breast (56%) and prostate (45%) were the most frequent reported cancers. Five studies (56%) reported multiple types of …
