Political, Economic And Social Dominance Of Major Cities In East Asia During The Twentieth Century, Michael B. Toney, Chalon Keller
Political, Economic And Social Dominance Of Major Cities In East Asia During The Twentieth Century, Michael B. Toney, Chalon Keller
Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications
One of the greatest shift in human societies has been the change from dispersed settlement patterns toward a complex urban pattern. Prior to the industrialization there were only a few urban places scattered throughout the world and none could compare with numerous cities of today with respect to size and complexity. In recent decades the growth of cities in Asia has been particularly remarkable as there has been an increase in the number of medium sized cities and the growth of a number of mega cities. This urbanization of the worlds population has corresponded with other fundamental changes in human …
The Impact Of Juvenile Curfew Enforcement On Crime Statistics, Kevin Orron Thomas
The Impact Of Juvenile Curfew Enforcement On Crime Statistics, Kevin Orron Thomas
Theses and Graduate Projects
While America's overall crime rate is in decline, juvenile crime is on the rise. One strategy to help prevent and reduce this phenomenon is the enforcement of a nocturnal juvenile curfew. In a five year period (1990-1994) fifty percent of major American cities took legislative action to enact a curfew ordinance for the first time, or revised an existing ordinance. The purpose of this study was to examine the enforcement of curfew as it related to the reduction or prevention of juvenile crime. The study analyzed selected crime statistics from two city's comparing and contrasting pre and post curfew enforcement …
Women Behind Bars: Trends And Policy Issues, Mark S. Kaplan, Jennifer E. Sasser
Women Behind Bars: Trends And Policy Issues, Mark S. Kaplan, Jennifer E. Sasser
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
In the crusade to get tough on crime, policy makers have also gotten tough on women, drawing them into prisons in rapidly growing numbers. Today, incarcerated women are predominately poor, uneducated, and unskilled; are disproportionately African American and Latina young women with children; and have severe health and mental health problems. This article examines the characteristics and needs of these women and presents recommendations for their more humane and pragmatic treatment and for social policy that is relevant for the decarceration of this country's soaring female prison population.

Nurse's Perceptions: Responsibility Attribution Of Rape Victims, Barbara J. Kiffe
Nurse's Perceptions: Responsibility Attribution Of Rape Victims, Barbara J. Kiffe
Theses and Graduate Projects
Rape is a social problem high impacting the individuals who have experienced sexual assault and its effects. Many clients report not only being victimized by the assault, but also in the aftermath by insensitive professionals who attribute blame to the victim. This blame is created by rape myths, beliefs that under certain circumstances, the victim was responsible for the assault. This thesis replicates a previous study done by Best, Dansky, and Kilpatrick (1992) in South Carolina among medical students and compares the results. This research study examines the attitudes of nurses from three different departments of a midwestern hospital who …
Speak Of The Devil: Rhetoric In Claims-Making About The Satanic Ritual Abuse Problem, Mary Deyoung
Speak Of The Devil: Rhetoric In Claims-Making About The Satanic Ritual Abuse Problem, Mary Deyoung
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This paper uses Toulmin's (1958) scheme to conduct a rhetorical analysis of claims being made in the construction of the satanic ritual abuse of children problem. The analysis reveals that the persistence of these claims over the last fifteen years is the product not of their compelling facts or their effective conclusions, but of their persuasive warrants. These implicit, "self-evident truths" resonate well with recent cultural concerns about the vulnerability of children to abuse, and the satanic menace.

The Empowerment Effects Of Criminal Court Legal Advocacy On Battered Women: An Exploratory Study, Elizabeth M. Jones
Theses and Graduate Projects
This exploratory study examined the relationship between battered women's legal advocacy and empowerment. It was hypothesized that women who received battered women's legal advocacy would be more empowered during their experiences with the criminal court process than women who did not receive legal advocacy. The sample consisted of 73 women in the intervention group and 60 women in the comparison group whose partners had been arrested on fifth degree domestic assault charges. The sample was drawn from 1995 police records, Nine participants completed a self-administered survey. Using measures of central tendency and bi-variate analysis it was found that women with …
Attrition In The Mandated Treatment Of Men Who Batter: A Look At Demographic Influence, Jill A. Yoerger
Attrition In The Mandated Treatment Of Men Who Batter: A Look At Demographic Influence, Jill A. Yoerger
Theses and Graduate Projects
Descriptive variables associated with men completing domestic abuse treatment programs were found to be influencing factors in earlier attrition research. One hundred clients who attended a Minneapolis-based domestic abuse treatment program were selected for inclusion in this study. Six demographic variables were thought to be predictive of treatment completion or drop out.
The literature review suggested that factors positively related to attrition included being under less strain. With this in mind, the revised Strain Theory (Agnew, 1992) was used as the theoretical framework for this study. Strain Theory focuses on negative relationships with others, negative affective states and pressure toward …

The Problematics Of Representation In Community Mediation Hearings: Implications For Mediation Practice, Angela Garcia
The Problematics Of Representation In Community Mediation Hearings: Implications For Mediation Practice, Angela Garcia
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Empowering disputants to represent themselves and create their own agreement is a frequently cited goal of community mediation programs. This paper explores how disputants' positions and interests are represented in mediation, and investigates the implications of such representation for the negotiation process. This narrative analysis of transcripts of videotaped community mediation hearings shows that disputant self-representation in mediation is never unconstrained. The interactional organization of mediation and the actions of mediators work to limit and define how disputants formulate their utterances. Mediator representation of disputants varies in the degree of intervention or coercion applied. Mediators may limit themselves to rephrasing, …

The Return To Family Intervention In Youth Services: A Juvenile Justice Case Study, Gordon Bazemore, Susan Day
The Return To Family Intervention In Youth Services: A Juvenile Justice Case Study, Gordon Bazemore, Susan Day
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
After more than a decade of relative neglect, youth services policymakers in the late 1980s began targeting the family as a primary focus of intervention in the response to a range of deviant behavior. One recent example of this return to family intervention has been a renewed emphasis on family services in juvenile courts and juvenile justice agencies. This case study describes one attempt to implement a new "family-focused" intervention approach as part of a larger return to treatment-oriented probation services in an urban juvenile justice system. Based on interviews and participant observation data gathered during a nine month field …
Family Correlates Of Delinquency: Cohesion And Adaptability, Glenn Shields, Richard D. Clark
Family Correlates Of Delinquency: Cohesion And Adaptability, Glenn Shields, Richard D. Clark
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The Circumplex Model of family functioning, which includes measures of cohesion and adaptability, was used with a community-based sample of youth (N = 480) to test its usefulness for explaining delinquent behavior. Results from the research indicate that the Circumplex Model is inadequate for explaining delinquency. It was concluded that the two major components of the model, cohesion and adaptability, do not operate in the curvilinear fashion as hypothesized. Rather, the results suggest the both factors are linear in their relationship with delinquency.

The Ideological Context Of Changing Juvenile Justice, Preston Elrod, Daryl Kelley
The Ideological Context Of Changing Juvenile Justice, Preston Elrod, Daryl Kelley
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The ideological nature of juvenile justice policy is analyzed, including the domain assumptions of the predominant juvenile justice ideologies which presently inform juvenile justice policy development. Further, it is argued that the failure of present juvenile justice policies to effectively respond to the juvenile "crime problem" may lead to the opportunity to develop a more critically informed juvenile justice policy, one which is better able to meet the needs of clients and respond more effectively to juvenile crime. Finally, some of the essential elements of a critical juvenile justice ideology and practice capable of more realistically and humanely responding to …

Assessing Crime Victim Satisfaction With Probation Services, Janet L. Isaacson
Assessing Crime Victim Satisfaction With Probation Services, Janet L. Isaacson
Theses and Graduate Projects
The field of Community Corrections has been mainly focused on identifying the needs and wants of the offender and the safety of the community. As the voices of crime victims are getting louder in the criminal justice system, probation departments are evaluating how to improve response to victim needs. A new framework that is being implemented in Community Corrections to meet those needs is a model called Restorative Justice. This model incorporates services to the offender, the victim, and the community.
A pilot project which offered specific victim services was developed out of the restorative justice concept through the Community …

Interventions With Older Adults With Hoarding Behaviors Living In "Garbage Houses", Henry J. Schoonover
Theses and Graduate Projects
The purpose of this study was to explore what interventions are being used on older adults living in what are described as "garbage houses." This study interviewed seven human service professionals to find how they intervened, what techniques they used, and what theoretical orientations influenced their intervention choices. With the help of articles in the literature and the findings from the respondents interviewed in this study, a hypothesis was developed emphasizing the systems perspective and problem solving method to establish a theoretical construct for an intervention. The intervention recommended would vary according to the individual client's need, but include short …
