This Is What I Am!!, Milbert H. Krohn Jan 1968

This Is What I Am!!, Milbert H. Krohn

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Getting to know science teachers about the state is somewhat of a problem for the teacher in smaller Iowa high schools. I suspect that this is a problem of communication rather than one of design by those of us in the less urban areas. When it was suggested that the Iowa Science Teachers' Journal be an avenue for establishing contact I was at first reticent about telling of myself.

A Study Of Terminal And Advanced High School Science Courses In The State Of Iowa, Richard W. Gates

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Information for the study was obtained through the use of the facilities of the Iowa Educational Information Center at The University of Iowa and through direct correspondence with the schools. Terminal science courses are those courses for non-college bound students, in addition to general science, biology, chemistry, earth science, and physics.

Let's Teach Geology As The Science Of The Earth, Chalmer J. Roy Jan 1968

Let's Teach Geology As The Science Of The Earth, Chalmer J. Roy

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The past decade has been marked by spectacular events in science and technology. The launching of Sputnik I in October 1957 was followed by public hysteria in the United States over the low estate of our education in science.

The Iowa Science Teachers Section of the Iowa Academy is growing and is becoming very active in the Science teaching of Iowa. I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who in the past have made the Science Teachers Section an organization in which a science teacher can become active in local, district, and state meetings.

An Analogy Between The Cell And A Factory: A Teaching Technique, Paul A. Christiansen Jan 1968

An Analogy Between The Cell And A Factory: A Teaching Technique, Paul A. Christiansen

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Often in a study of the cell and its cellular processes such as photosynthesis, respiration, assimilation, and growth, biology students find it difficult to acquire an adequate idea of how these living processes interact. Synthesis of these separate processes into an organized whole is even more difficult to comprehend. This paper describes an analogy between a factory and the cell that has been found effective as a classroom discussion technique to more clearly illustrate what the cell must do to maintain itself and to divide.

A Method Of Teaching Evolution In High School, Jerome J. Jackson Jan 1968

A Method Of Teaching Evolution In High School, Jerome J. Jackson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

A little over a century ago, Alfred Russel Wallace and Charles Darwin formally presented the concept of evolution to the world. Since Darwin's publication of The Origin of Species, the theory of evolutionism has been attacked from various quarters, primarily by individuals without scientific backgrounds.

Cba, Chems, Traditional: The Dilemma, Verne A. Troxel

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Since the advent of the CHEMS and CBA chemistry materials, many teachers have been in a state of confusion as to whether they should use these new materials. Perhaps there is now, or soon will be, adequate research available to you so you can make your choice between the two new programs and the more conventional approach to chemistry.

Raising Japanese Quail In The Laboratory, Kashmiri L. Arora Jan 1968

Raising Japanese Quail In The Laboratory, Kashmiri L. Arora

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Within a few years, the use of Coturniz coturnix japonica, popularly known as Japanese quail, as a laboratory research animal has increased tremendously in the United States and also abroad. Currently, a variety of laboratories conducting investigations on different aspects of biological and related areas are using this bird as an experimental animal. We have learned from its use in both individual and class experiments that it is also a very useful animal for classroom experimentation.

Acceptance Of Tobacco Mosaic Virus By Established Tomato Root Cultures, Valerie Halverson Jan 1968

Acceptance Of Tobacco Mosaic Virus By Established Tomato Root Cultures, Valerie Halverson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

With Haberlandt's idea of cultivating individual cells in vitro, cell tissue culture began in 1902. Sporadic work was done in this area through the ensuing years. However, it was not until White's cultivation of tomato roots for an indefinite time span in 1934 that culture study became significant. Most work has been oriented toward the study of the growth and function of the cell. The research has included various nutritional and environmental studies. The proposition of this research is to use established technique for culturing tomato roots in order to go a step further, and use these cultures to study …

Comparing Laboratory Instruction Methods In Biology, John C. Coulter Jan 1968

Comparing Laboratory Instruction Methods In Biology, John C. Coulter

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

This investigation compares achievement of ninth grade students in biology taught by inductive laboratory experiments, by deductive laboratory exercises, and by demonstration of inductive experiments. It appears that the inductive approach produced significantly greater attainment of attitudes of science. The emphasis of this on designing experiments and analyzing the data did not distract from the ability of students to learn and apply facts and principles. None of the instructional methods tested was found to be more effective with any particular ability range. Students in laboratory classes reacted more positively to their instruction than did those taught by the demonstration method.

Twenty-Five Years As A Starter?, Warren Classon Jan 1968

Twenty-Five Years As A Starter?, Warren Classon

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The National Science Teachers Association will celebrate its twenty-fifth birthday early in 1969. Your reaction to this announcement of a Silver Symposium event may be somewhat passive. A twenty-fifth birthday, like any anniversary, really has little meaning unless it includes achievement. A look at something of NSTA's history and activities should determine the significance of the event.

Letter To The Editor, William W. Berg Jan 1968

Letter To The Editor, William W. Berg

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

I feel moved to call to your attention an item from Mr. Jackson's article in the February issue of The Iowa Science Teachers' Journal, "A Method of Teaching Evolution in High School." Though it is not the major area of the article's discussion, the author's treatment of the Earth's origin irritated me.

Fortifying Laboratory Inquiry Through The Use Of Scientific Articles, Bernard W. Benson Jan 1968

Fortifying Laboratory Inquiry Through The Use Of Scientific Articles, Bernard W. Benson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Using scientific articles in teaching is in itself no innovation. Baumel and Berger (1965) provided an excellent approach to this task. I find no argument with the format they proposed. However, I do question their statement which follows concerning student outcomes from such experiences.

This is a review of an effort-largely experimental-to improve the introductory geology course at Baylor University by involving the student in actual research in the teaching process and in geology. An effort has been made, and will be expanded, to remove most of the artificial restraints imposed by formal lecture-laboratory courses.

The Overhead Projector As An Aid To Laboratory Instruction, Larry L. Schenken Jan 1968

The Overhead Projector As An Aid To Laboratory Instruction, Larry L. Schenken

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In many cases the science teacher overlooks the possibility of using the overhead projector during laboratory sessions. Projectors often are covered with dust jackets and shoved into a comer like some unwanted piece of old furniture as soon as a lab activity is started. With a bit of planning these machines may become an integral part of almost any laboratory experience.
