Models Of Social Activity Of Protestant Churches In The Context Of Russia's Military Aggression Against Ukraine, Ihor Lutsan
Models Of Social Activity Of Protestant Churches In The Context Of Russia's Military Aggression Against Ukraine, Ihor Lutsan
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The main focus of our research intention is to outline constructive models of social activity of religious communities in the context of Russia-Ukraine war. The subject of the study is the Protestant denominations of Ukraine and their socially relevant activities, which today, having acquired a multi-vector orientation, are most clearly expressed and most noticeable in such forms: missionary work, charity, volunteer movement, in particular, assistance to the army; organizing and providing social services to individuals and groups in need of assistance to ensure their holistic development, and thus providing spiritually oriented social and psychological rehabilitation of military personnel, demobilized combatants …
Distortion Of Religious History In The Concept Of "Russian World", Oleksandr Lukyanenko
Distortion Of Religious History In The Concept Of "Russian World", Oleksandr Lukyanenko
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The article continues the series of research illustrating the formation of the idea of the “Russian world” in the religious discourse of Orthodox Russia. The main attention is paid to the ideological stamps used by the Patriarch of Moscow Kirill while preaching and giving public speeches. The study summarizes the idea of the monolithic “Holy Rus” with Moscow as a core-city developed to support Vladimir Putin’s annexationist geopolitical policy. The paper cites examples of falsification of historical facts in religious and political spheres applied with the intention to form a strong propaganda background in the conditions of the Russian-Ukrainian war. …

From Both Sides Now: Reflections On Recent Methodological Trends In The Study Of Islam, Aaron W. Hughes Prof
Abdou Filali-Ansary Occasional Paper Series
This is a set of critical reflections on the place and role of ‘theory and method’ within the context of the study of Islam, especially (but not solely) as carried out in the field of religious studies, over the course of roughly the last twenty years. The goal here is not to criticise, but instead to come at this issue of ‘theory and method’ in the study of Islam from a more mature perspective. At present in the field there is a diverse set of attempts to imagine ‘Islam’, not as a theological category that must be defended, but as …

I Was In Prison, And Ye Visited Me
I Was In Prison, And Ye Visited Me
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Marvin Roberson, longtime friend of F.A.R.M.S., has brought to our attention an opportunity to supply the Utah State Prison with books, articles, videos, and tapes about the Book of Mormon. Several inmates in this correctional institution are eager to read books like Nibley's Approaching Zion and to watch programs like "Unraveling the Mysteries of the Dead Sea Scrolls." Anyone who has worked with prisoners knows that some desire to repent, but the way back is hard. Great needs cry out for strong resources.

Library Shaping Up Nicely, Thanks To Volunteers
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Thanks to the efforts of Daniel McKinlay, Pat Eyler, Stephen Heidt, and Jim Holmes, unselfish F.A.R.M.S. volunteers, our library is becoming more accessible. All of our books have been catalogued and assigned call numbers, and our collection of papers is receiving the same attention. A computerized index is being created to make it easier for researchers to find items by title, author, and subject.

Paper Details The Chronology Of The Book Of Mormon
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
A new preliminary paper, "Introduction to Book of Mormon Chronology: The Principal Prophecies, Calendars, and Dates," by Randall Spackman, examines the temporal context of the Book of Mormon. Much as John Sorenson has done for the geography of the Book of Mormon, Spackman attempts carefully to lay out the issues that must be addressed in any treatment of the chronology of the book and present a plausible and enlightening correlation between the chronology of the Book of Mormon and other historical events and time-keeping systems.

Video Recordings Begins On A New Book Of Mormon Lecture Series
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Filming has begun for a new video series that will present fifty or more lectures on the Book of Mormon. F.A.R.M.S. has invited BYU faculty and others to deliver one-hour lectures on favorite Book of Mormon topics, to be videotaped for broadcast on public and community-access cable television stations and for release in 1994 on videocassette.
The Sword Of Laban As A Symbol Of Divine Authority, Brett L. Holbrook
The Sword Of Laban As A Symbol Of Divine Authority, Brett L. Holbrook
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The sword that Nephi took from Laban played an important role in Nephite history, not only as the model after which the Nephites later made swords to defend themselves, but also and perhaps more importantly as a symbol of the legitimate authority of the Nephite rulers, beginning with Nephi himself.
Scrolls Broadcast Received Well
Scrolls Broadcast Received Well
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In March the VISN Interfaith Satellite Network broadcast nationally a program entitled "The Dead Sea Scrolls: A New Era Dawns." It consisted of highlights of the conference on the Dead Sea Scrolls that F.A.R.M.S. helped to sponsor and supplemental information about the scrolls. The number of calls received by the F.A.R.M.S. office indicates that the program generated considerable interest.

The 1993 spring issue of the Journal of Book of Mormon Studies features more than ten outstanding articles, plus notes and communications. Like the first issue of the Journal (which is available again, now in its third printing), this issue contains some of the most recent research on the Book of Mormon. It also features a classic older paper, now updated, that sheds light on some of the new research.

Nibley Book Of Mormon Broadcasts Extended
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Because of the very favorable response to their broadcasting the first two semesters of Hugh Nibley's Honors Book of Mormon class, KBYU has decided to continue the series during 1993 with semesters three and four. The editing of those semesters for broadcast has been made possible by a generous grant from Karen and Alan Ashton.
New Light Shed On Book Of Mormon Scholarship
New Light Shed On Book Of Mormon Scholarship
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
William J. Hamblin of the BYU History Department and member of the F.A.R.M.S. board examines some common weaknesses of anti-Mormon comments on the Book of Mormon in a new paper, "Basic Problems with the Anti-Mormon Approach to the Geography and Archaeology of the Book of Mormon." The points he makes are sound and may prompt new lines of research for serious students of these subjects.
