Does Divorce on the Ground of Adultery Grant Permission for Remarriage?
The Church of Rome vehemently denies that adultery or fornication severs the marriage bond and grants permission for remarriage. The Council of Trent, in Session XXIV, "On the Sacrament of Matrimony," Canons VII and VIII, has declared as follows: "If any one with saith the Church has erred in that she hath taught, and doth teach, in accordance with the evangelical and apostolical doctrine, that the bond of matrimony cannot be dissolved on account of the adultery of one of the married parties and that both or even the …

When, at the middle of the last century, the epoch-making excavations in the Mesopotamian Valley lengthened the historical perspective and pushed back the horizon of the ancient Orient, these archeological discoveries were hailed with mixed feelings. An attitude of doubt and suspicion clashed with an exaggerated credulity.

Melito, bishop of Sardis, in a letter presented to Aurelius, called Christianity "the philosophy which began under Augustus." (Eusebius, IV, 26.) The narrative about the persecution in Gaul under Marcus Aurelius, in V, is among the most important in the Church History of the bishop of Caesarea, untainted by the flattery of his later references to Constantine. This persecution occurred in 177 A. D., especially in Lugdunum and Vienne on the Rhone. The report given by the churches there, sent to the churches in the provinces of Asia and Phrygia, is the longest citation in the whole history of Eusebius, …

The Ethics Of Jesus And The Plight Of The Coal Miners, James Croswell Perkins
Honors Papers
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the ethics of Jesus and to describe conditions which have resulted from a failure to apply his teachings to an important phase of economic life. No attempt will be made to offer a panacea.
Some of the limitations of this study should be noted. Attention will be confined to the bituminous coal industry. As the main interest in this thesis is ethical, it has been necessary to neglect many economic aspects of the problem. We are fully aware of the existence and importance of such questions, but they seem beyond the scope …

The slurs of Gibbon have been answered by many Christians, especially by Milman, Dean of St. Paul's. The chief aim of Gibbon was to belittle the motives and heroism of the martyrs, to call in question the accounts of witnesses like Lactantius and Eusebius, and to excuse or mitigate the action of those responsible for the persecutions. In the present paper my aim is to examine with care the procedure and methods of Eusebius.

A layman writes to the Lutheran of October 6, 1932: ''Have enjoyed the series of four articles on 'Lutheran Union' as presented from four different viewpoints. However, your editorial remarks concerning the above were quite disappointing to me in as far as you do not seem to like 'free conferences.' How will we Lutherans ever get together if we refuse to confer with one another? Surely a free conference is a good beginning. Differences will crop out of course, but must be honestly faced by all. We Lutherans cannot unite by ignoring real differences. A mere church-government union will not …

No Divorce, Except It Be for Fornication.
Fornication constitutes the one and only cause for obtaining a divorce, for severing the marriage bond. However, before the Christian congregation may sanction a suit for divorce on the grounds of fornication, it must be manifest that the person accused has actually committed fornication. The offense must be proved de facto and de jure. It must be fornication de jure. A raped woman has not committed fornication; she has been the victim of a crime perpetrated against her will. Whether rape has occurred before or after betrothal or marriage, it will not afford …
