Defects Of Preaching, J. H. Fritz Mar 1940

Defects Of Preaching, J. H. Fritz

Concordia Theological Monthly

At the present time there is no little complaint about poor preaching, and whether we like it or not, we must admit that much poor preaching is heard from Lutheran pulpits also: sermons that are shallow in reference to their Biblical content, sermons that do not supply the needs of the people, sermons poorly constructed, sermons not well delivered. Erasmus's Pictures Of Church Conditions, W. Dallmann Mar 1940

Erasmus's Pictures Of Church Conditions, W. Dallmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Familiar Colloquies came out on January 1, 1519, and on the title-page state they are "useful not only for polishing a boy's speech but for building his character." E. F. H. Capey says: ''Erasmus occasionally lapses into coarseness, but the Colloquies were written for men of nerve, not for children." What can you do with such biographers?

In this work Erasmus is proved a most peculiar priestly pedagog. Froude calls Erasmus ''the most gifted man Europe has ever seen," and this is his best-loved and most widely read work. It gives us a better picture of Catholicism than many …

The Church And Social Problems, W. Arndt Feb 1940

The Church And Social Problems, W. Arndt

Concordia Theological Monthly

These brief remarks are intended to introduce a series of articles dealing with the topic mentioned in the caption, articles which, God willing, will appear in this journal during 1940. While we should feel extremely sorry if our Church and its ministers, instead of studying and preaching the Word of God, should devote themselves to the debating of sociological questions, we cannot ignore the situation which confronts us, realizing that on every side these matters are made the subject of religious discussion and that our Christians are vitally affected by them. Our church members are looking to the clergy for …

The Articulus Catholicus, Martin S. Sommer Feb 1940

The Articulus Catholicus, Martin S. Sommer

Concordia Theological Monthly

We have all heard, and had impressed upon us, that the true doctrine concerning justification by faith alone is the articulus stantis et cadentis ecclesiae. The truth of this statement has often been confirmed and established in our publications. But this article concerning justification by faith alone is not only the articulus stantis et cadentis ecclesiae, but it is also the articulus catholicus; that is to say, it is a teaching which has always been taught by all faithful teachers everywhere in the Christian Church.
