Foreword, W. Arndt Jan 1941

Foreword, W. Arndt

Concordia Theological Monthly

As one at the beginning of a new year views the religious scene, it cannot be denied that in the Lutheran Church more discussion of questions of doctrine and practice is taking place than has been witnessed in it for at least one, probably for more decades. The great issue is again whether the course of strict, uncompromising confessionalism which this journal and its chief ancestor, Lehre und Wehre, consistently sponsored from the very beginning is morally, that is, in the court of God and our own conscience, defensible, and not only defensible, but right, proper, just, and required. The …

Lectures On Galatians, Wm. Dallmann Jan 1941

Lectures On Galatians, Wm. Dallmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

Paul gloried in the Cross of Christ, in nothing but the Cross of Christ. By that he means the Gospel, by which we are saved, "Christ died for our sins." "We are justified by His blood." 1 Cor. 15:2, 3; Rom. 5:9.

As the sun radiates beams of light in all directions, so the Cross sheds light on all important things. It is a pillar of light flaming with unspeakable glory.

The Cross preaches God's love. There we see and feel His heart beating for us. The Cross in bright light shows God so loved the wicked world that He …

The Bible - Is It The Word Of God, Or Does It Merely Contain The Word Of God?, Ed. Koehler Jan 1941

The Bible - Is It The Word Of God, Or Does It Merely Contain The Word Of God?, Ed. Koehler

Concordia Theological Monthly

Whether the Bible is the Word of God or whether it merely contains the Word of God has been a matter of controversy ever since higher criticism applied its dissecting-knife to the Sacred Record. While not bold enough to discard the entire Book as a human fabrication, men held that beside some divine truths the Bible contained quite a number of human interpolations and opinions, yea, even myths, fables, errors, and contradictions. Also in our day there are those who will not regard the whole Bible as the authoritative and inerrant Word of God, whose every statement they must accept …

Squaring Up: Fifty Talks To Juniors, Julius Fischbach Jan 1941

Squaring Up: Fifty Talks To Juniors, Julius Fischbach

Fischbach, Julius, 1894-

In the Foreword, the editors describe this collection as a “series of simple and interesting talks” that shows how much Fischbach “understands and likes boys and girls.” A newspaper clipping pasted into the inside back cover ends with “We congratulate him upon this contribution of his to the children’s work not alone in our church but throughout the denomination as well.”

It is likely that the sermons were delivered outside Appalachia. Fischbach, however, has significant ties to the region, so they can be included in the Library.

Sermon Study On Rom. 8:24-28, Th. Laetsch Jan 1941

Sermon Study On Rom. 8:24-28, Th. Laetsch

Concordia Theological Monthly

The theme of the first part of Paul's Letter to the Romans is the very heart of the Christian religion, the doctrine of the justification of sinners by grace, for Christ's sake, through faith, chap. 1:18-5: 21. Beginning with chap. 6, the apostle speaks of the necessary fruit of justification, sanctification of life, and admonishes his readers to unflagging zeal in striving for holiness. This sanctification requires a constant struggle of the spirit, the new man, which delights in the Law of God, against the flesh, in which dwelleth no good thing, chap. 7.

Some Eschatological Views Of The Fate Of The Wicked In Human History, Ormonde Stanly Brown Jan 1941

Some Eschatological Views Of The Fate Of The Wicked In Human History, Ormonde Stanly Brown

Graduate Thesis Collection

The writer expresses the hope that this treatment of an important subject may be found interesting--he knows this it can scarcely be found pleasant reading. It is our purpose to treat of the "eschatological views of the fate of the wicked"--Hell ideas entertained--"in human history". These are many. While most of them agree at some points, the range of ideas is broad, and "human history" is broad. We wish to emphasize our disinterest, for the purpose of this thesis, in eschatological views of the reward of the "good," save to say that, generally, this is but 'the other side of …

The Individual And The Kingdom Of God, Frederic A. Chandler Jan 1941

The Individual And The Kingdom Of God, Frederic A. Chandler

Graduate Thesis Collection

The Kingdom of God as depicted by Jesus Christ is the only human society that will effectually eliminate the conflict between the individual and society.

To prove this thesis, the succeeding chapter's will proceed as the nature of the subject dictates. First, as the individual human being is the fixed and unchangeable factor in this problem, the first step will be to give an adequate definition of a person. Next, since his conflict with his fellows reaches the very essence of his being when it touches his moral nature, morality will be defined and it will be shown what that …

A Study In The Psychology Of Religious Sentiment, Wm. Linton Davis

Graduate Thesis Collection

Religion is a vital subject. This dissertation either makes a contribution to the study of the psychology of religion, or else it is a waste of time trifling with a very vital subject. There are various phases of the psychology of religion such as the origin of religion; the phenomena connected with conversion and religious revivals; with mysticism, spiritism, occultism, ecstasy, and prophetism; with the subconscious, faith-cure, Christian Science, etc.; the interconnection of mind and body; and the growth of the religious consciousness.

Volume 11: 1940-41, St. Mary’S Of The Barrens Seminary (Missouri)

De Andrein

A major achievement of the students of St. Mary’s of the Barrens was the regular publication of their student newspaper. Originally titled, The Andrean, it began as a typewritten, hand illustrated piece that appears to have been circulated among the student body from 1928 to 1930. In November 1930, the format and title changed to The DeAndrein. The printed newspaper included copies of photographs, and was offered for sale to alumni, family, and friends. This informative publication continued uninterrupted until 1965. Many issues of The DeAndrein (newsletter) from June 1940 to December 1963; various programs, goals, directions, etc.; many pamphlets …
