To understand the attitude of Erasmus, it is necessary to look into the background of his times and to study the early influences upon his life. The life span of Erasmus covered a period of events which was a time of great flux and change. It was in this period that the Middle Ages gave way to modern times. Feudalism and serfdom were losing their prominence. Humanism spread over Europe from its cradle in Italy. Scholastic philosophy was losing its hold, bowing to the efforts of the humanists, mystics, and reformers.

After having dwelt at some length on the manifestations of Christian fellowship, we now come to consider restrictions upon such manifestations. Let us begin by stating the obvious: There are restrictions; not man-made, originating in the decrees of church councils or in synodical resolutions, to be sure, but imposed by God Himself, the Head of the Church. To us this may seem self-evident, yet it is not conceded by all who lay claim to the name "Christian." There are those who aver that Christian fellowship must be unrestricted.

In the English language, a word denoting time calls for the assistance of other words in order to describe the particular aspect of the time to which reference is made. For instance, the word "night" by itself describes little, but "by night" or "night-time" suggests the specific kind of time in contrast to "day time". "In the night" refers to a point of time at which something happened that did not involve the whole night, whereas "during the night" or "throughout the night" would suggest an extension of a condition or experience during the whole of …
