Brigham Young's Ideal Society: The Kingdom Of God, J. Keith Melville

BYU Studies

Brigham Young (1801-1877), second president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints, encouraged early Church members to build up the Kingdom of God. Unlike other Christians, Young and the Latter-day Saints believed that the Kingdom of God was temporal, not just spiritual. The article outlines the traits of the Kingdom's government and society and asserts that the faith of the Latter-day Saints and their leader caused them to labor to make their Utopia a reality.

Allied Strategy In World War Ii: The Churchill Era, 1942-1943, De Lamar Jensen

This article closely studies the predominantly British military strategy of the Allied forces in 1942 and 1943. It examines the characteristics of, the reasons behind, and the consequences of these strategies, as well as the reasons why the policies changed in the latter part of 1943. Shortly after the attack at Pearl Harbor, Churchill met with the Americans to determine how to proceed. Although the Americans favored a direct invasion of German-occupied Europe, and the Russians desired a second European front, Churchill and the British wanted to focus on Italy and the Mediterranean as a means to find Europe's "soft …

The research which resulted in this thesis was done for the purpose of determining the place which united military undertakings had in the Israelite tribal league prior to the establishment of the monarchy. The Old Testament describes a number of wars which took place during the era known as "the period of the judges." Although the victories won in these battles were usually ascribed to "Israel" in general, there are indications in some cases that the actual participants in the battles were limited to a small number of the Israelite tribes. Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

There are several reasons why one would expect to find similarities to the Scrolls in James. The latter is clearly a Palestinian document written for Jewish readers. It is probably the earliest of the New Testament books written during the formative years of the church. This is a time when the church would be more open to outside influences in matters such as organization and polity. The early dating of James has been accepted by many scholars since the study of Gerhard Kittel, who dates it in the fourth decade of the first century, immediately before Paul's first missionary journey.

During the Nineteenth Century, a reform agitation known as the prohibition movement began to gather momentum in the United States. Led chiefly by the Women's Christian Temperance Union and pushed also by the Prohibition Party, this movement grew only slowly until a general spirit of reform began to sweep the country at the end of the century. With the W.C.T.U. and the American Anti-Saloon League leading the fight during the Progressive Era, the tide of public opinion finally took form in the Eighteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, an amendment which forbade "the manufacture, sale or transportation …

The political views of J. Reuben Clark, Jr. have been of interest to the membership of the Mormon Church since the year 1933, when Clark was appointed second counselor to Heber. J. Grant, then President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This interest was generated In part by the various political positions of importance which Clark held since 1906, and by the numerous politically-oriented speeches which he gave from time to time throughout the Church and the nation.
