The Place Of Catechetical Instruction In Catholic Education, Anne H. Graham Jul 1930

The Place Of Catechetical Instruction In Catholic Education, Anne H. Graham

Bachelors’ Theses

Catechetical instruction in the Church dates from St. Paul, and is mentioned in his Epistles. Requirements for admission into the primitive Church were exacting and thorough. The writings of the Fathers, the ancient liturgies, and the decrees of the first Councils tell us that before their Baptism, the catechumens were obliged to learn by heart the Our Father and the Apostles’ Creed, and had to be instructed in these formulas. In addition, special instruction was also given them regarding the Commandments and the Sacraments they were about to receive - Baptism, Confirmation, and the Holy Eucharist.

The Effects Of Newman's Mediterranean Voyage On His Conversion, Herbert E. Hengsbach Jun 1930

The Effects Of Newman's Mediterranean Voyage On His Conversion, Herbert E. Hengsbach

Bachelors’ Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to give a detailed account of the travels of John Henry Newman in eighteen hundred and thirty-two, stressing and discussing the events which influenced Newman most in his conversion to the Catholic faith. This thesis aims at more than a mere tabulation of events; it is to be a cross-section of Newman's life during the period of a year. This discussion, also, will attempt to disprove the Protestant theory stating that Newman was converted: because he was of a Catholic temperament and that religion is merely a matter of temperament. During this eventful voyage, …

The 1929 meeting of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association took place at Boiling Springs Baptist Church in Boiling Springs, NC. The introductory sermon was delivered by C. J. Black. The report on State Missions recommends that pastors renew efforts to gain support for the State Missions, and that the Association should encourage its members to subscribe to the Biblical Recorder to stay informed. The Foreign Missions report indicated that missionary work in China, Latin America, Nigeria, and Europe has made progress. Fundamental Inconsistencies In The Theories Postulating A Cuneiform Origin Of The Biblical Creation Record, Henry J. Kleindienst Jun 1929

Fundamental Inconsistencies In The Theories Postulating A Cuneiform Origin Of The Biblical Creation Record, Henry J. Kleindienst

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this paper then shall be to consider the claims raised by those who believe that the Cuneiform tablets form the basis of these stories, to show the weaknesses of these theories, and to advance the positive reasons why the Genesis account is not dependent on any cuneiform original. We shall first treat of the Sumerian tablets for they are older in point of time, and then devote the major portion of the paper to the Babylonian tablets and restrict it to the so-called Enuma Elish.

The Teleological Argument For The Existence Of God, Louis A. Wilson Apr 1929

The Teleological Argument For The Existence Of God, Louis A. Wilson

Bachelors’ Theses

After all, the mystic's position is not wholly unintelligible. For while his imagination serves him as an immediate perceptive faculty with which he sees God in his every glance at the universe, his view is not without a philosophical basis. It is from the data furnished us by the universe of our experience that Natural Theology is able to arrive at the knowledge of the existence of God. In doing so it may employ either of three ·types of arguments. If it begins with a consideration of the primary attributes proper to all finite beings as such, it is metaphysical; …

Scholasticism An Intellectual Basis And Unifying Principle Of Modern Science, Alice Veronica Johnson Jan 1929

Scholasticism An Intellectual Basis And Unifying Principle Of Modern Science, Alice Veronica Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis, completed at Xavier University of Louisiana in 1929, argues that Scholastic philosophy, and the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas in particular, supplies an intellectual foundation that unifies the findings of modern science. Johnson takes up the common charge that Scholasticism is a barrier to scientific progress. She contends instead that it is the one philosophy able to answer the ultimate questions of “whence” and “how” that science cannot address on its own.

Johnson tests this claim against several fields in turn: astronomy, geology, physics, chemistry, and psychology. In astronomy, she reviews competing theories of the origin of the …
