A Theology Of Word And Spirit: Donald Bloesch's Theological Method, Elmer M. Colyer
A Theology Of Word And Spirit: Donald Bloesch's Theological Method, Elmer M. Colyer
Journal for Christian Theological Research
One of the distinctive characteristics of Donald G. Bloesch's evangelical theology is his theological method. Bloesch proposes "a theology of Word and Spirit" in which the action of the Spirit brings the Word of God (Jesus Christ) present, yet hidden, in Scripture to light so that people hear and respond in faith. The Spirit is given the primary role in forging a conjunction between the human and historical words of Bible and divine revelation never at human disposal. The rigorous application of this theme leads to characteristic reformulations of various elements in Bloesch's theological method including revelation, Scripture, hermeneutics, authority, …

Religion And Ethics In The Thought Of John Bellers, T. Vail Palmer Jr.
Truth's Bright Embrace: Essays and Poems in Honor of Arthur O. Roberts
The lives and writings of seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century Friends have had an enormous impact on later generations of Quakers. They have also received due attention from church historians. George Fox's Journal has achieved a measure of fame as a Christian devotional classic. Beyond this, only two of these early Friends have received significant attention, after their time, in circles beyond the Quaker family. One of these Friends, William Penn, is well enough known to need no further comment. The other one is John Bellers. His writings have had their chief impact on Socialist and Communist thinkers. Robert Owen, early …

Rufus Jones And Quaker Unity, Hugh Barbour
Truth's Bright Embrace: Essays and Poems in Honor of Arthur O. Roberts
The Society of Friends, for Rufus Jones as for Arthur Roberts, remains a single movement, called by God to a special role in American Christianity and world history. Both men have also been realistically aware of human limitations and diversity. Yet they have seen God's power, shared in meetings for worship as well as in the religious experience of individuals, able to change human society and transcend human ideas and institutions.

Resistance In A 'Culture Of Permission:' Sociological Readings Of The Correspondence With Persian Authorities In Ezra 1-7, Daniel L. Smith-Christopher
Truth's Bright Embrace: Essays and Poems in Honor of Arthur O. Roberts
The first six chapters of the book of Ezra center around an alleged correspondence between the Persian Emporer's court and the local authorities of Palestine under Persian rule. Without question, these letters were crucial to the editors of Ezra-Nehemiah. But why? What does the reproduction of this alleged official correspondence mean to the final editors of Ezra-Nehemiah?

Truth's Bright Embrace: Essays and Poems in Honor of Arthur O. Roberts
As a definitive work of the Society of Friends, the Journal of George Fox has set the tone and tenor for the Society's understanding of one's experience of God or the ultimately Real. Various interpretations of Fox have been offered, but a consistent theme in all interpretations has been Fox's emphasis on the necessity of an experimental or experiential understanding of one's encounter with God. A result of this consistent emphasis has been a trend Fox started himself: since one's experience of God is the touchstone of religious faith, the role or importance of religious texts, religious communities and religious …

Truth's Bright Embrace: Essays and Poems in Honor of Arthur O. Roberts
For a number of years now, I have believed that informal and formal outdoor experiences built on a biblical knowledge base can be beneficial and should be purposely pursued throughout one's life. My intentions for a vocational ministry in the outdoors have been to reconnect people with the natural realm, to assist them in rediscovering the outdoors. In support of that, I conducted an action research project to demonstrate the benefits of God's natural world, the outdoors, in the lives of a select group of people through a five-day "immersion" in that outdoor environment. The outdoor setting became the mechanism …

Expressions Of Faith: Testimonies Of Latter-Day Saint Scholars, Susan Eaton Black
Expressions Of Faith: Testimonies Of Latter-Day Saint Scholars, Susan Eaton Black
Maxwell Institute Publications
The news media often characterizes some detractors of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as “Mormon intellectuals” and presents them to the public as the thinking Mormons who know the inside story of the church. In this rush to produce controversial news, an obvious truth has been overlooked—that the LDS intellectual and academic communities are composed of strong believers in the Prophet Joseph Smith’s revelations and solid supporters of LDS Church leadership. Only at the fringes is there noticeable dissent.
Readers of Expressions of Faith will discover a marvelous, uncoached unity in these testimonies of LDS scholars. Although …

The Relationship Of Wisdom To Transformational Leadership: Illustrated By The Historical Jesus, Marykate Morse
The Relationship Of Wisdom To Transformational Leadership: Illustrated By The Historical Jesus, Marykate Morse
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
The shifting context of Western social structures and global inter-relatedness demands leaders who can effectively navigate systems through chaos. This study hypothesized that wisdom is the construct that enables leaders to "see" and thus interpret a beneficial path of action. The purpose of the study was to explore how psychological wisdom theory relates to transformational leadership.
The historical Jesus served as the model for this relationship. Using Biblical historical criticism, an analysis was done of Jesus' wisdom in the Jewish wisdom tradition. Jesus' wisdom was then compared to the features of psychological wisdom. Both deal with contradictions and change, exhibit …

Nature Among The Mormons: An Ecocritical Approach To Mormon Literature, Gail D. Ballard
Nature Among The Mormons: An Ecocritical Approach To Mormon Literature, Gail D. Ballard
Theses and Dissertations
Increasingly, environmentalists have focused on Judeo-Christian tradition as the cause of Western culture's ecological crisis. It is the purpose of this paper to examine the charges against Judeo-Christian tradition and to show how the revealed doctrines of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints provide possible solutions to environmental challenges. The resulting Latter-day Saint environmental paradigm will be superimposed on selected Mormon literature to determine how effectively the doctrines taught by Church authorities filtered into popular Mormon culture.
Despite the inspired teachings of Latter-day Saint prophets, Mormons remain unimpressive in their environmental practices. My research will show that while …

The Role Of The Pastor In Lay Development In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church In Papua New Guinea, Aaron M. Lopa
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Statement of the Problem
The task of this study was to rethink the role of pastors as shepherd-equippers of lay leaders in view of the explosive growth of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Papua New Guinea.
Method
The dissertation has two parts. Part One covers: (1) institutional factors which provided the background for this study, (2) biblical and theological dimensions as the basis for the new pastoral paradigm in PNG, and (3) cultural and sociological factors as means to understand the local cultures in order to contextualize ministry to make it more relevant to the people. Part Two synthesizes the …

A Training Program For Grief Ministry For Singapore Seventh-Day Adventist Pastors, Chor Kiat Sim
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
Many Seventh-day Adventist church pastors in Singapore are not trained in grief ministry. This results in some pastors who are insensitive to the grieving. Consequently, theirs and many church members' grief has been unresolved. This study was undertaken to develop a holistic pastoral perspective regarding grief and to compose a training program in grief ministry that will help pastors understand their own grief dynamics and that of their parishioners.
Method
This project attempts to present the principles of grief ministry through the following dimensions: (1) Singapore's need of grief ministry in the midst of socioeconomic development; (2) the study …

Changes In The Religious Devotion Of Latter-Day Saints Throughout The Life Cycle, Barry L. Johnson, James T. Duke

LDS women rate themselves higher in religious devotion than do LDS men. Both experience diminished religious devotion in certain life stages but increase in devotion over their life spans.
