Catholic Action, Paul A. Zimmerman May 1944

Catholic Action, Paul A. Zimmerman

Bachelor of Divinity

According to well established policy the Catholic Church considers it its right and responsibility to rule in temporal affairs as well as in spiritual. Therefore, the Papacy today is striving through Catholic Action to condition the social and moral thinking of society so that the leadership of the Catholic Church may eventually be accepted in every field of human activity. The tremendous implications of this program demand thorough study. In our discussion of Catholic Action we shall first trace the development of Catholic Action from its beginning to the present day. We shall then consider its theological bases. Finally, we …

Harnack's Theological Positions, W. Arndt Apr 1944

Harnack's Theological Positions, W. Arndt

Concordia Theological Monthly

The inclusion of Adolf Harnack in this series of articles on epoch-making modern theological leaders who promoted error requires an explanation. Strictly speaking, he was not the founder of a school of theology. He did not teach a system of doctrine of his own. In him we are dealing with a church historian, and not with a dogmatician. Still, when the persons to be treated in this series were listed, it was felt that Harnack's name would have to be included because in the period extending from about 1895 to 1920 he was the most frequently mentioned theologian of Germany, …

Fallow Field-The Church's Youth, P. E. Kretzmann Jul 1940

Fallow Field-The Church's Youth, P. E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

The caption of this article is taken from a chapter in the very interesting and valuable book by Henry W. McLaughlin, entitled Religious Education in the Rural Church. The expression was used to designate and describe the condition of untold thousands of children, chiefly in the mountainous districts of the Southern Appalachians, who were growing up without a knowledge of God and of the Savior, until the Director of Country Church Work of the Presbyterian Church in the United States learned of their plight and organized a movement to bring them at least the fundamentals of religious education. The book …

A Criticism Of The Madras Conference From The Standpoint Of A Christian Believer, Wilbert Griesse Apr 1940

A Criticism Of The Madras Conference From The Standpoint Of A Christian Believer, Wilbert Griesse

Bachelor of Divinity

What a wonderful thing it would be if all the denominations could get together on a common ground and work together against ·the forces of sin and hell: What an impression that would make upon the world! Such a condition would greatly further the cause of missions. It was especially the younger churches that were crying for unity. The younger churches cannot understand the divisions and the multiplied organizations of the mother churches. If they are all Christian, why are they not united?

The Oberlin Negro And His Church, Homer Julius Tucker Jan 1940

The Oberlin Negro And His Church, Homer Julius Tucker

Honors Papers

This thesis is the result of a study which represents an interest in a group of ill-adjusted community churches. For a long time I have been interested in the Negro and his church life here in Oberlin. While the background out of which these churches grew and the environment in which they operate are superior in many ways to those of most communities, the churches themselves are definitely sub-model.

My ultimate objective has been to investigate the aforesaid topic with the hope of discovering problems that are preventing the churches from expanding and serving the community, as well as to …

Dr. Walther's Book ''That The Ev. Luth. Church Is The True Visible Church Of God On Earth", Paul Schulz

Concordia Theological Monthly

We are members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, and we glory in that fact. We rejoice that so many of us can meet to consider the welfare, the work, and the needs of this Church, and we are again mapping out our work in this our dear Church in order then to go back and to devote ourselves to the service of this Church which we love and to which we have dedicated our gifts, our labors, our possessions, yea, ourselves. And we do this because we are divinely convinced that our Church, together with all churches and church-bodies agreeing …

The Northwestern Shoshone Indians, (A) Under Tribal Organization And Government, (B) Under The Eccleastical Administration Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints As Exemplified At The Washakie Colony, Utah, Joshua T. Evans May 1938

The Northwestern Shoshone Indians, (A) Under Tribal Organization And Government, (B) Under The Eccleastical Administration Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints As Exemplified At The Washakie Colony, Utah, Joshua T. Evans

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Northwestern Shoshone Indians is the tribe of Indians that inhabited the territory north of the Great Salt Lake comprising the northern part of Utah and the Southern part of Idaho. The Indians have loose boundary lines, yet we can definitely state that this tribe occupied the territory from the Weber river on the South to the Snake river on the North; from Bear Lake and Bear river on the East to Raft river and Goose creek on the West. Their confines would take in Weber, Rich, Box Elder, Cache, and part of Morgan, counties in Utah; and Bear Lake, …

The Social Outlook Of The Lutheran Church, Richard Huegli Apr 1938

The Social Outlook Of The Lutheran Church, Richard Huegli

Bachelor of Divinity

I am not writing with the thought of instituting a church-wide swing toward the "social Gospel ", or even with the hope of a sudden plunge of the church into the sphere of sociology. Our church is definitely Scriptural, so it is my purpose to bring out on the basis of the biblical background for social work, the extent into which our church has delved into social service, and a few humble suggestions for greater service to man and thus to God. It is the hope that such specific emphasis upon our present labors in this field will make us …

The Church And Social Problems, P. E. Kretzmann Sep 1937

The Church And Social Problems, P. E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

There can be no doubt that the chief aim of the Christian Church, in fact the one aim which the Church as such is to pursue, is that assigned to her in the Great Commission, namely, to preach the Gospel of the salvation of men through the mercy of God in Christ to all nations. It was in this sense that John the Baptist performed his ministry, in preaching repentance and remission of sins, in accordance with the prophecy of his aged father: 'Thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways, to give knowledge of …

Approaches To Bible-Study In A Metropolitan Center, A. R. Kretzmann Sep 1937

Approaches To Bible-Study In A Metropolitan Center, A. R. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

To many of our people the Bible is a closed book, not because of the difficulty of understanding it, but because the approaches to it, outside of the sermon, have always been rather ponderous and seemingly uninteresting. A fortunate impatience and natural rebellion against such an attitude has caused us to seek new approaches to Bible-study which would be thoroughly dignified and truly enriching. The people who have found the way back to the Scriptures through these approaches have contributed to one of the most heartening experiences of a metropolitan ministry. We are not here in order to defend any …
