The Systemic Erasure Of The Black/Dark-Skinned Body In Catholic Ethics, Bryan Massingale Jan 2011

The Systemic Erasure Of The Black/Dark-Skinned Body In Catholic Ethics, Bryan Massingale

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

One of the questions I address in my scholarly work is this: What would Catholic theological ethics look like if it took the "Black Experience" seriously as a dialogue partner? To raise the question, however, is to signal the reality of absence, erasure, and "missing" voices. The question is necessary only because the "Black Experience"--the collective story of African American survival and achievement in a hostile, exploitative, and racist environment--and the bodies who are the subjects of this experience have been all too often rendered invisible and therefore "missing" in U.S. Catholic ethical reflection.

"Welcoming The Stranger": A Dialogue Between Scriptural Understandings Of And Catholic Church Policies Towards Migrants And Refugees And Pastoral Praxis In The Migrant And Refugee Pastoral Care Bodies Within The Archdiocese Of Perth, Judith M. Woodward

Theses

Growth in human movement around the world has been one of the phenomenal aspects of globalization since the Second World War. Among these ‘people on the move’ those whom the United Nations Humanitarian Commission for Refugees has described as ‘persons of concern’ – refugees, displaced persons etc. – have increased at an alarming rate. They are now well in excess of the global population growth rate over the same period Many of these have moved into adjacent poorer developing countries but increasingly many are seeking asylum, either through official United Nations’ channels or through on-shore arrivals, in developing nations. This …

Worldview: The Missing Dimension Of Evangelism In Post-Communist Society, Sergei Golovin Aug 2008

Worldview: The Missing Dimension Of Evangelism In Post-Communist Society, Sergei Golovin

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

For a while Christians considered the Soviet Union to be a great potential mission field; nevertheless when the door for missions opened wide, it happened unexpectedly. Despite thousands of missionaries and millions of dollars invested immediately in spreading the gospel in the post-communist world, after a short-term tide, church growth declined back to pre-perestroika level. The research made during that period demonstrated that the so-called awakening had nothing to do with the biblical concept of repentance (i.e. a radical change of a person’s worldview). An explanatory model of the worldview transformation dynamics in post-communist society is developed as an attempt …

Redeeming Indian ‘Christian’ Womanhood?: Missionaries, Dalits, And Agency In Colonial India, Chad M. Bauman Jan 2008

Redeeming Indian ‘Christian’ Womanhood?: Missionaries, Dalits, And Agency In Colonial India, Chad M. Bauman

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

This study of dalit Christians in colonial North India suggests that women who converted to Christianity in the region often experienced a contraction of the range of their activities. Bauman analyzes this counterintuitive result of missionary work and then draws on the work of Saba Mahmood and others to interrogate the predilection of feminist historians for agents, rabble-rousers, and gender troublemakers. The article concludes not only that this predilection represents a mild form of egocentrism but also that it prevents historians from adequately analyzing the complexity of factors that motivate and influence human behavior.

Mission Leadership And Church Growth, Chris Sugden

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

My question is what we can learn from Dr. Cho’s experience and writings about the role of leadership of Christian communities in Church growth. It is quite legitimate to do this as there are precedents in Christian history to characterize a movement of God by the writings and activities of a leader – there are Lutheran churches and Wesleyan churches. We are meeting to reflect on what characterizes a Choian church.

The Tapestry Of Early Christian Discourse: Rhetoric, Society And Ideology [Review] / Vernon K. Robbins [Review Of The Book The Tapestry Of Early Christian Discourse: Rhetoric, Society, And Ideology, By V. K. Robbins], Rubén R. Dupertuis

Religion Faculty Research

In this book Vernon Robbins, Professor of Religion at Emory University, provides the most in-depth and systematic discussion to date of the method of Biblical interpretation known as socio-rhetorical criticism, a method he has been developing through numerous articles and books since the publication of Jesus the Teacher: A Socio-Rhetorical Interpretation of Mark in 1984. It should be noted that his Exploring the Texture of Texts: A Guide to Socio-Rhetorical Interpretation, a book similar to the one being reviewed, also appeared in 1996. Although both books contain a very similar outline, Exploring the Texture of Texts is intended to …

A Comparative Study Of 'People' In The Old Testament And The Minjung Concept, Hyun Sup Um May 1991

A Comparative Study Of 'People' In The Old Testament And The Minjung Concept, Hyun Sup Um

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this study is to find out whether or not the concept of עִס in the Old Testament is the same as it is used in Minjung theology. Therefore the first part of this thesis will deal with outside influences, such as secular theology, the theology of hope, liberation theology, process theology, and theology of history on Minjung theologians, specifically on these three: Jung Choon Kim, Hee Suh Moon, and Joon Suh Park. All three insist that the origin of Israel was the Habiru. Therefore the origin of עִס (Israel) in the Old Testament will also be treated. …

The Concept Of Contextualization And Its Implications For The Seventh-Day Adventist Theological Education In India, Melchizedek M. Ponniah Jan 1986

The Concept Of Contextualization And Its Implications For The Seventh-Day Adventist Theological Education In India, Melchizedek M. Ponniah

Dissertations

Problem

The Seventh-day Adventist chruch in India operates in a rapidly changing pluralistic context and a predominantly Hindu culture. Response to the emerging opportunities and demands suggest the reconstruction of theological education in more contextual terms. It is imperative that the institutions and practice of ministry be shaped and evaluated in terms of the manifold functions to be performed in the varegated and highly differentiated cultures within which the Adventist church functions.

Method

This study utilized the historical and descriptive methods. Literature was reviewed to gather concepts related to the concept of contextualization and contextualization of theological education.

Conclusions

An Examination Of Personal Salvation In The Theology Of North American Evangelicalism: On The Road To A Theology Of Social Justice, Robert F.J. Gmeindl Jan 1980

An Examination Of Personal Salvation In The Theology Of North American Evangelicalism: On The Road To A Theology Of Social Justice, Robert F.J. Gmeindl

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The question under consideration is the effect of the belief in personal salvation on the theology of North American Evangelicalism, for the purpose of developing a theology of social justice.

This study is a preliminary investigation of the history of Evangelical individualism and the potential influence that individualism might have on Evangelical theology. Certain trends toward isolation and separation, as well as a tendency to neglect what I have called systemic evil, are examined to see how they may result from the Evangelical stress on individualism. Also presented in a skeletal outline of Marcuse’s analysis of one-dimensional society in order …

Filing And Indexing Methods For Students And Pastors, Palmer G. Ruschke Jun 1956

Filing And Indexing Methods For Students And Pastors, Palmer G. Ruschke

Bachelor of Divinity

Since the average pastor has available no one qualified to assist him in this task, he must do most of it himself. Aside from the task of reading and evaluating printed materials, the pastor must find some way of storing these materials and organizing them so as to have available the materials he needs, when he needs them. Dr. Elgin S. Moyer, librarian at Moody Bible Institute, reports a comment from one of his professors, “There are two ways of securing the information we need; one, having it in our memory, and the other, knowing where to find what we …

The Social Gospel, P. E. Kretzmann Jul 1944

The Social Gospel, P. E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

''Why bother about the social gospel?" a man recently told the present writer. ''The social gospel is dead and buried. No one concerns himself about it any more. It has been superseded by the theology of Karl Barth in its various forms, by the religious philosophy of Kierkegaard, by the neo-orthodoxy of Niebuhr and others, and by a number of other movements and developments."
