Joseph Smith In The Current Age, Richard Bushman
Joseph Smith In The Current Age, Richard Bushman
CGU Faculty Publications and Research
What is the place of Joseph Smith's teachings in our time? What do his writings have to say in a world so much different from the one he himself lived in? If Joseph Smith were alive today, he would be 186 years old. Most of his writings have been in circulation for over 150 years. During that century and a half, vast changes in government, the economy, philosophical outlook, and popular values have transformed society. After all this, what do Joseph Smith's teachings have to say about the problems of the late twentieth-century society? We do not expect his writings …

The Humanity Of God In Liberal Orthodox Theology, Paul Valliere
The Humanity Of God In Liberal Orthodox Theology, Paul Valliere
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
The purpose of this paper is to present some of the testimonies of liberal Orthodox theology in late Imperial Russia concerning the theology of Incarnation. Since it may come as a surprise to many people, even to many Orthodox, that a tradition of liberal theology existed in Russian Orthodoxy, the evidence I adduce may be of interest apart from the specific theological discussion to which it pertains.

Sphere Sovereignty And The University: Theological Foundations Of Abraham Kuyper's View Of The University And Its Role In Society, Wayne A. Kobes
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
Abraham Kuyper (1837-1920) was a leading figure shaping many facets of Dutch culture during and after his long life. In addition to exerting a profound influence on politics, ecclesiastical concerns, journalism, elementary and secondary education, and societal life in the Netherlands, he also founded and was the primary formative influence shaping the Free University of Amsterdam The problem taken up by this dissertation is the discovery and elucidation of Kuyper's concept of the nature, task, authority and role of the university in modern society as it is shaped by significant theological views he held Specifically, this study demonstrates how Abraham …
A Road Less Traveled: Soteriology In Islam, Brian Christopher Smith '93
A Road Less Traveled: Soteriology In Islam, Brian Christopher Smith '93
Honors Projects
When constructing a general description for "soteriology," one must be aware of the potential scope of the term. The word "soteriology" means "doctrine of salvation" or "way of salvation." Generally understood, one can speak of "soteriologies" and imply that there is more than one way to understand salvation, more than one doctrine of salvation. It should be noted that all religious systems do not share a universal soteriology. If soteriology is not universally understood, how may one study it? A particular religious system may hold that its contentions are singularly veridical and that other understandings are false, while another religious …

The Lotus Sūtra And The Rhetoric Of Legitimization In Eleventh-Century Japanese Buddhism, William E. Deal
Faculty Scholarship
Thia paper explores the “rhetoric of legitimation,” that is, the use of religious discourse based on an authoritative text in order to legitimate political and social agendas. Specifically, I will examine two eleventh-century Japanese works, the Hokke genki ÀTàz of the Buddhist monastic ascetics known as hokke hijiri ÀT¸, and the Eiga monogatari ¼P]B of lay Buddhist aristocrats (kizoku {Ÿ).
Human Responsibility And The Environment: A Christian Perspective, Roger Hutchinson
Human Responsibility And The Environment: A Christian Perspective, Roger Hutchinson
Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies
In his review of the 1932 English translation of Max Weber's famous study, The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, United Church of Canada theologian John Line observed that Protestants in particular should pay close attention to Weber's findings. 'For they make it clear that Protestantism had a leading part in determining our present economic structure, a fact which puts in our hands a liability now that the faults of that structure have become apparent.' A few decades later Christians awakened to a similar sense of responsibility for environmental problems. One of the catalysts for this awakening was …

The Concept Of God And Sacred Music Style : An Intercultural Exploration Of Divine Transcendence/Immanence As A Stylistic Determinant For Worship Music With Paradigmatic Implications For The Contemporary Christian Context, Wolfgang Hans Stefani
Dissertations
Problems. The conscious conservation of religious music style in most cultures contrasts with the stylistic pluralism of Western Christian worship music. This study addressed the problem of decision making within the diversity of music available for Christian worship.
Purpose of the Study. The study's purpose was to explore a core aspect of worldview concerning the nature of ultimate reality--the concept of divine transcendence/immanence--as a transcultural determinant of sacred music style. The focus was the music rather than associated lyrics.
Methodology and Sources. This interdisciplinary study followed a philosophical approach to develop a theoretical paradigm. Documentary research from the …

Belief-In And Belief In God, John N. Williams
Belief-In And Belief In God, John N. Williams
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Of all the examples of ‘belief-in’, belief in God is both the most mysterious and the most challenging. Indeed whether and how an apologist can make a case for the intellectual respectability of theistic belief, depends upon the nature of this ‘belief-in’. I shall attempt to elucidate this matter by an analysis of the relation of ‘belief-in’ to ‘belief-that’ and by treating belief in God as a special case of ‘belief-in’.
