The approach to this examination will be rather complex. In order to arrive at a precise meaning for ὲκ πίστεως, it is essential that the word πίστις be thoroughly examined, especially its connection to the Old Testament concept of faith (אכזד). In order to differentiate between ὲκ πίστεως and other prepositional phrases with πίστις it will be necessary to examine the …

Christ Is Still The Answer, Dean Freiday

Truth's Bright Embrace: Essays and Poems in Honor of Arthur O. Roberts

Perhaps one of the most significant developments among American Friends during this last century was the 1970 St. Louis Conference. Uniquely among Quaker conferences, "official" delegates were appointed by all the yearly meetings of Friends in the U. S. and Canada. The appointees of two yearly meetings were unable to attend for health or other last-minute emergencies, but no yearly meeting boycotted the Conference. In accordance with Friends' principles, the group could not legislate, but position papers were presented for FUM, FGC, and (the then) EFA.

A highlight of that gathering was the address given by Everett L. CattelP on …

Nature Among The Mormons: An Ecocritical Approach To Mormon Literature, Gail D. Ballard Jan 1996

Nature Among The Mormons: An Ecocritical Approach To Mormon Literature, Gail D. Ballard

Theses and Dissertations

Increasingly, environmentalists have focused on Judeo-Christian tradition as the cause of Western culture's ecological crisis. It is the purpose of this paper to examine the charges against Judeo-Christian tradition and to show how the revealed doctrines of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints provide possible solutions to environmental challenges. The resulting Latter-day Saint environmental paradigm will be superimposed on selected Mormon literature to determine how effectively the doctrines taught by Church authorities filtered into popular Mormon culture.

Despite the inspired teachings of Latter-day Saint prophets, Mormons remain unimpressive in their environmental practices. My research will show that while …
