The Roman Doctrine Of The Lord's Supper, F. E. Mayer
The Roman Doctrine Of The Lord's Supper, F. E. Mayer
Concordia Theological Monthly
There are evident traces of Neoplatonism in Roman theology, especially in the doctrines concerning man and the sacraments. The majority of Roman theologians make a careful distinction between the spiritual, as the higher, and the material, as the lower, nature in man. Soul and body belong to two different spheres, the soul being inclined to the spiritual, the body to the sensual, the world of sense.

Fighting Liberalism With Blunted Weapons, Theo. Engelder

The Modernists will not like certain sections of this book. The Christian Century says: ''This is a great book, greatly written, and greatly needed. Liberal Christians will find it hard to believe this. They still have in their mouths the bad taste of A Christian Manifesto, which was hailed with glee by the foes of spiritual freedom.

The False Arguments For The Modern Theory Of Open Questions, C. F. Walther, Alex Wm. Guebert
The False Arguments For The Modern Theory Of Open Questions, C. F. Walther, Alex Wm. Guebert
Concordia Theological Monthly
After having shown that the theory of open questions cannot be supported by assuming a gradual growth of dogmas through successive decisions of the Church, we shall prove In the following paragraphs that a doctrine must not first gain a so-called symbolical recognition before it can become a dogma of the Church and must not therefore be placed in the category of open question until such recognition has been achieved.

The Mode Of Baptism, Walter A. Baepler
The Mode Of Baptism, Walter A. Baepler

A striking diversity exists in the Christian Church with reference to the mode of administering the rite of Baptism. Broadly speaking, the Eastern Church baptizes by immersion, the Western Church by pouring or sprinkling.

The False Arguments For The Modern Theory Of Open Questions, C. F. Walther, W. Arndt

The assumption of a successive origin of dogmas through so-called decisions of the Church, by which some men seek to uphold the modern theory of open questions, militates, In the second place, against the relationship existing between Scripture and Christian faith.

The Institutional Missionary And The Spiritual Rehabilitation Of The Prisoner, E. A. Duemling
The Institutional Missionary And The Spiritual Rehabilitation Of The Prisoner, E. A. Duemling
Concordia Theological Monthly
This dejected and rejected man is not forgotten by the Church. Whatever we may think of prisoners and their crimes, the fact nevertheless remains that each and every one has an immortal soul, for which the Savior also bled and died on Calvary's cross. It is God's will that the wicked should turn from his ways and live. Cognizant of the fact that the Lord enjoins the Church to preach the Gospel to every creature, a missionary chaplain is sent to the abode of convicted men. It is the Gospel that will save them from eternal condemnation.

The False Arguments For The Modern Theory Of Open Questions, C. F. Walther, W. Arndt
Concordia Theological Monthly
In the first place, it is not true that our dogmas come into existence gradually and that hence there are articles of faith "which are still in the process of formation, and others which as yet have either not at all or merely by way of beginning been drawn into the stream of events in which dogmas take shape." It is not true that some articles of faith have come down to us "as undecided, unfinished questions, incomplete structures, as open questions," because concerning these things one does not yet find unanimous agreement in the Lutheran Church.

A further argument for this theory is the view that evidently for ecclesiastical unity not more is required than agreement in the teachings laid down in the public confession of the Church; that these are the only ones fixed by the Church itself; that on these only the Church has made pronouncements and decisions; and that everything else has to be considered as belonging to the category of open questions.
The Administration Of The Sacraments, Th. Laetsch
The Administration Of The Sacraments, Th. Laetsch
Concordia Theological Monthly
Our Lord Jesus Christ in the night in which He was betrayed instituted, and Himself administered, His Holy Supper. To this day this Sacrament remains His Holy Supper, a heavenly banquet which He Himself has spread and which He Himself serves to all attendants Says Luther: "We know that it is and is called the Lord's Supper, not the supper of the Christians. For the Lord ha not only instituted it, but also prepares and administers it Himself.
