Haec Dixit Dominus, Th. Engelder Jul 1947

Haec Dixit Dominus, Th. Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

Is there such a thing as doctrinal certainty? Luther says: "The preacher must not pray the Lord's Prayer and ask for forgiveness of his sin after his sermon (if he be a true preacher), but must proudly declare with Jeremiah: Lord, “Thou knowest: that which came out of my lips was right before Thee' (Jer.17: 16); yea, he should declare boldly with Paul and all the Prophets and Apostles: 'Haec dixit Dominus, God Himself hath said this.' Et iterum: 'In this sermon I have been an apostle "and prophet of Jesus Christ. Here it is not necessary, not even good, …

Light From The Papyri On St. Paul's Terminology, Eric C. Malte Jul 1947

Light From The Papyri On St. Paul's Terminology, Eric C. Malte

Concordia Theological Monthly

The problem of defining the type of Greek in the Pauline Epistles has, in the past, afforded ample room for much controversy. It remained for Adolf Deissmann to discover that while the language of the New Testament differs from classical Greek, it is neither "Special Greek," nor "Aramaic Greek," nor "Biblical Greek"; still less is it "tired Greek" or "bad Greek."

Thomas Chalmers, The Walther Of Scotland, F. R. Webber Jun 1947

Thomas Chalmers, The Walther Of Scotland, F. R. Webber

Concordia Theological Monthly

The year 1947 marks the centennial of the death of Dr. Thomas Chalmers, perhaps the greatest man that Scotland ever produced. His life and his conflict with a corrupt State Church offer many striking parallels with that of Dr. Walther of our own Synod. Moreover, religious conditions in Scotland a little over a century ago were of such a nature that one needs only to change names and a few details in order to have a picture of religious conditions in Germany just before the Saxon emigration to America.

The Relations Between The English And The Scottish Reformations, Carl Napier Jr Jun 1947

The Relations Between The English And The Scottish Reformations, Carl Napier Jr

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of the writer's original investigation was to find out what influences and connections existed between the two Reformations. The purpose of this study is to show that before Henry VIII English efforts at union were almost wholly political. At least there is no mention of religious-political parties. War and conciliation were the diplomatic weapons. After Henry's break with the Pope by the Act of Supremacy in 1534 and to 1707 when the final union of the crowns took place political and religious relations became closely entwined. Henry and his successors, particularly Elizabeth, used religion in fostering the political …

Christian Citizenship, Valentine J. Mack May 1947

Christian Citizenship, Valentine J. Mack

Bachelor of Divinity

"The Christian's life in this world is not lived in separate compartments, the spiritual and the temporal. It is one life, the life of a child of God, and in all the various situations and relationships in which the Christian finds himself he is motivated and governed by those principles which have been implanted in him in his regeneration and which are nurtured and developed by the means of grace. It is impossible, therefore, to separate his life as a Christian from his life as a citizen; in his relation to the state, the nation, and the government the Christian …

Lutheran Sola Fide Vs Roman Catholic Ex Opere Operato Of The Basis Of The Confessions, John G. Deterding May 1947

Lutheran Sola Fide Vs Roman Catholic Ex Opere Operato Of The Basis Of The Confessions, John G. Deterding

Bachelor of Divinity

Opposed to the sola fide is the doctrine of ex opere operato, i.e., that the sacraments mechanically confer grace upon all who receive them. Faith is not necessary to receive this grace, but the mere outward ceremony effects it mechanically for all those who do not place an obstacle in the way.

An Examination Of The Worship Of Mary Of Guadalupe, Martin Luther Frenk May 1947

An Examination Of The Worship Of Mary Of Guadalupe, Martin Luther Frenk

Bachelor of Divinity

The Trinity of the Bible is fast becoming the Quadrinity in the Catholic Church. Mariolatry, or the worship of Mary, has become a chief characteristic of the Roman Church in our day. The doctrine of Mary’s cooperation in salvation is far more developed and emphasized today than in the days of Martin Luther.

An Examination Of The Premises Of Wesley's Doctrine Of Christian Perfection, Anthony S. Gedwillo May 1947

An Examination Of The Premises Of Wesley's Doctrine Of Christian Perfection, Anthony S. Gedwillo

Bachelor of Divinity

For the past two centuries theologians have discussed the pros and cons of Wesley's doctrine of Christian perfection. Many have voiced their opinions in favor of it, maintaining that this high ethical ideal is certainly to be supported because there is the possibility of attainment; others have discredited it most severely by contending that such a Christian goal was not possible in this world, in this life, so long as the flesh of man was united with the soul of man.

Rome And The First Amendment Of The Federal Constitution, Norbert Walter Meyer May 1947

Rome And The First Amendment Of The Federal Constitution, Norbert Walter Meyer

Bachelor of Divinity

This paper, however, merely intends to sound an alarm. Roman Catholicism, regardless of the impression it might give, is a genuine threat to the religious freedom guaranteed in the Federal Constitution. We shall not attempt to judge the validity of the American form of government. That we take for granted. But our purpose is this: to determine the extent of the liberty guaranteed in the law of the land; to point out apparent agreement and obvious discrepancies between liberty and the Vatican; and to cite the practice of Rome as evidence of her intolerance and the Papacy's authoritarian principles.

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this thesis is to compare and evaluate these four versions, in order to determine the chief contributions of each to the field of English Bible revision, and to observe which has the best all-around qualifications for present-day usage. The discussion will center on the New Testament.
