The Image Of Provo, Utah, As Seen Through The Perceptions Of Its Residents, J. Larry Murdock

Theses and Dissertations

The data for this study was gathered through a random stratified geographic sample from all residential areas of Provo. The study was based on 84 completed questionnaires which were gathered on the basis of a broad socio-economic cross section. All of the questions were open-ended, and included the drawing of mental maps of residents' images of Provo. The data was analyzed on the basis of respondents' areas of residence, age, length of residence in Provo and religious background.

The purpose of the study was to focus on the visual perception of Provo, Utah, as seen by its residents. The study …

A Study Of The Spiritual Influence Of The Arts On Christian Liturgy: With Special Emphasis On The Impact Of Architecture On Seventh-Day Adventist Worship Practice, Walter O. Comm Jan 1976

A Study Of The Spiritual Influence Of The Arts On Christian Liturgy: With Special Emphasis On The Impact Of Architecture On Seventh-Day Adventist Worship Practice, Walter O. Comm

Doctor of Ministry Projects

From its beginning the Seventh-day Adventist church has taken seriously the commission of Christ to proclaim the gospel to all the world. In this endeavor she has laid emphasis on the spoken word in evangelism. It is not so surprising then that the rather controversial area involving the role of art in the visual proclamation of the gospel has received only passing attention. In view of the keen interest, and in some cases excesses, in art and architecture among the Christian churches today, however, the Adventist church cannot stand aloof. She is bound to be influenced and, therefore, needs to …

The Development And Formative Evaluation Of Instructional Materials And Procedures Designed To Teach The Concept Of Christian Witness, Gordon Gale Bietz Jan 1976

The Development And Formative Evaluation Of Instructional Materials And Procedures Designed To Teach The Concept Of Christian Witness, Gordon Gale Bietz

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church must witness if they are to fulfill the Gospel commission and spread the three angels' messages. Two factors which may be hindering the development of an active lay witness are: (1) a lack of understanding about what witness really is and, (2) an inadequate understanding of how to witness.

Methods

The methods used were divided into three activities. The first was the review of theological and instructional literature toward the end of the development of instructional materials. The second activity was the use of these materials during which formative evaluation took place. …

The Confirmation Of Promise: A Letter To George Ganss, Michael J. Buckley S.J. Nov 1975

The Confirmation Of Promise: A Letter To George Ganss, Michael J. Buckley S.J.

Religious Studies

Dear George: Peace!

Your request for my impressions on the 32nd General Congregation of the Society is here on my desk. A letter is a better form for my remarks. It indicates their character: personal, impressionistic, tentative, and somewhat hesitant. They come out of my random experiences and out of my own attempts to read these experiences. They draw into a unity my personal interpretation of the General Congregation, especially what it might mean for the Society within the United States. They are tentative because they possess all of the shaky particularity of the prudential interpretation, that amassing of so …

Masked Men: Person And Persona In The Giving Of Justice, John T. Noonan Jr. Sep 1975

Masked Men: Person And Persona In The Giving Of Justice, John T. Noonan Jr.

University of Dayton Review

May a judge without moral guilt condemn to death a person he knows to be innocent of the crime for which he is condemned? May an executioner without moral guilt put to death a person he knows to be innocent? The answer of St. Thomas Aquinas to both of these serious moral questions is a qualified “Yes.” I propose to examine his answer, its relation to his view of the person, and the relation of his answer to modern Thomistic personalism.

Personhood And Respect For Life, Vernon J. Bourke Sep 1975

Personhood And Respect For Life, Vernon J. Bourke

University of Dayton Review

The problem to be considered here centers on the question: What is a person? The way that we answer this question is very important in practical thinking, for all moral and legal problems involve persons. In particular, discussions of the morality of abortion require some definite view as to whether the fetus is in any sense a person. Indeed, we shall see that many contemporary issues concerning the right to live a full human life receive different solutions, depending on one's view of what a person is.

Many writers today, especially in the field of the social sciences, insist that …

The Homily At The Mass Commemorating The 700th Anniversary Of The Death Of Thomas Aquinas, Immaculate Conception Chapel, University Of Dayton, March 7, 1974, Joseph L. Bernardin

University of Dayton Review

Thomas Aquinas was a true intellectual. He was intensely interested in science. philosophy and theology — all of which, after a rather long dormant period, were beginning to come to life and to attract attention during his formative years. It soon became evident to Thomas that God had given him great talents, and he chose to serve God and the Church by developing and using those talents to the fullest extent possible. Never did he consider intellectualism to be an obstacle to the Church's mission. On the contrary, by his prodigious research and writing, he proved that the intellectual life …

Aquinas And Education For A Just Technological Society, John O. Geiger Sep 1975

Aquinas And Education For A Just Technological Society, John O. Geiger

University of Dayton Review

There remains in the heart a yearning to return home to the medieval synthesis. Yet whole-hearted acceptance would be inauthentic. At the same time however, it is possible to gain enlightenment from Aquinas. Merleau-Ponty “assumes that we can clarify the choices of others through our own and ours through theirs, that we adjust one by the other and finally arrive at the truth.” This assumption seems valid. It is an opportune time to examine “the choices” of Aquinas. Not only because it is the 700th anniversary of his death, but also because of the time that has elapsed since many …

St. Thomas And The Preambles Of Faith, Ralph Mcinerny Sep 1975

St. Thomas And The Preambles Of Faith, Ralph Mcinerny

University of Dayton Review

On several occasions St. Thomas makes use of the phrase praeambula fidei in speaking of those truths about God which are accessible to unaided human reason. It is well known that Thomas thought that pagan philosophers, notably Aristotle, had succeeded in proving that God exists and had come to knowledge of many of His attributes. These are the matters the phrase “preambles of faith” is meant to cover, and that is why discussion of it can aspire to cast some light on the notion of Natural Theology, the culminating concern of metaphysics and thus of philosophy.

The Development And History Of The Seventh-Day Adventist Church In China Since The Communist Take-Over, Lien-Chieh Tsao Sep 1975

The Development And History Of The Seventh-Day Adventist Church In China Since The Communist Take-Over, Lien-Chieh Tsao

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In evaluating the status of Christian religions in China today, this paper draws largely on unpublished sources. Since China is a "closed" country, accurate reports are somewhat limited and quite scarce. As a result, this thesis depends on unpublished memoirs of friends who were in China at the time and on correspondence and conversations with people who have made recent visits to the mainland. From these sources the paper attempts to describe the current condition of Christianity in China, trace some of the causative factors, and evaluate the potential for future mission work.

To provide a background and help explain …

Secular & Ministerial Counseling In Bowling Green, Kentucky, Henry Darke Jul 1975

Secular & Ministerial Counseling In Bowling Green, Kentucky, Henry Darke

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Samples from two populations, community ministers and secular counselors, were surveyed to develop and analyze a description of the perceptions between and among these groups concerning their roles as counselors in the total community. Five questions were the focus of the research. The results of these questions may be summarized as follows: 1) both sample groups agreed that there seemed to be a need for additional ministerial counselors; 2) almost unanimously, the secular counselors indicated that they would welcome a more active ministerial counseling involvement within the total community setting, although a considerable portion (41%) of the ministers expressed doubts …

Conversion And Culture Change In A Highland Maya Community, Judy Stomsvik Jun 1975

Conversion And Culture Change In A Highland Maya Community, Judy Stomsvik

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The traditional religion of the Tzotzil Indians of Chiapas, Mexico is a blend of ancient Maya and Spanish Catholic elements. Recently Protestant missionaries and lay workers have entered the area, with varying degrees of success. One of these evangelizing· movements has been carried out by members of the Seventh-day Adventist church, with a great deal of success in some areas.

Since conversion of individuals to Adventism results in culture change for these individuals in the area of world view, i.t should also have ramifications in other areas of the culture as well. The purpose of this research was to discover …

Baltimore Of Mount Pleasant: A Case Study Of The Tradition Of The Chanted Sermon In Virginia, E. Henry Willett Iii

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Analysis of theme, style and structure of the chanted sermons of a Virginia preacher shows that the chanted sermon is a powerful ritualistic expression in certain communities. As practiced among Afro-American groups the chanted sermon is a ritual expression which serves to resolve conflicts, affirm values, and meet certain socio-psychological needs.

An Existential Appraisal Of Selected Nigerian Fiction, Jim Nesin Omatseye May 1975

An Existential Appraisal Of Selected Nigerian Fiction, Jim Nesin Omatseye

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

One of the two aims of this research was to elucidate from a philosophical perspective a selected body of Nigerian fiction. The second objective has been to investigate the dominant themes of the two selected novelists and relate them to existentialism.

The most essential theme was found to be colonialism and its disruption of the African culture. It was implied in the works of the novelists that authentic African culture was dislocated by British imperialism in Nigeria. The use of force and other features of power was manifested in the takeover. Through various literary devices and innuendo they suggest that …

The Real Presence In The Lord's Supper A Comparative Study Of Hermann Sasse, Leiv Aalen, And Tom Hardt, Geir Hoaas May 1975

The Real Presence In The Lord's Supper A Comparative Study Of Hermann Sasse, Leiv Aalen, And Tom Hardt, Geir Hoaas

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Our objective is to portray the Real Presence under three aspects, namely Christology, Salvation for the individual, and the Function in the Church. As such it is a systematic endeavor to clarify the relation of the Real Presence to each of these areas. The two latter are necessarily dependent on the first. However, we are also limited in a historical sense, in that our study is primarily an analysis of these three relations as presented by the theologians we are investigating, Hermann Sasse, Leiv Aalen, and Tom Hardt. We do not, therefore, intend to give an independent and original contribution …
