A Functional View Of Human Motivation In The Local Seventh-Day Adventist Church Based On Theological And Psychological Principles, Willmore Duncan Eva Jan 1981

A Functional View Of Human Motivation In The Local Seventh-Day Adventist Church Based On Theological And Psychological Principles, Willmore Duncan Eva

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The hypothesis o f the study states that an internalized grasp of the pardoning love of God revealed in Jesus Christ will tend to motivate Christians to a life of Godly activity . At the same time it is recognized that the human being is motivated on the basis of certain natural needs, the need for a sense o f belonging, esteem, and self- fulfillment. The study shows how the motive force o f God's forgiveness through Christ affects the natural motivational drives of humanity in the local church setting . The possible effect on the local church of intentionally …

A Christian Consideration Of Polygamy, Jean-Jacques Bouit Jan 1981

A Christian Consideration Of Polygamy, Jean-Jacques Bouit

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Since the beginning of its mission outreach in Asia and Africa, the Seventh-day Adventist Church has been confronted with the polygamy issue. Several attempts made by the church to formulate a unified policy for dealing with the polygamous convert culminated in the recommendation voted at the General Conference session in San Francisco in 1941. This resolution requires that in order to be admitted to baptism and church membership a polygamist must dismiss all his wives save one.

Recently, increased anthropological knowledge has led many Protestant churches in Africa to emphasize the legality of the marriage institutions in various societies. In …

The Significance Of Dietrich Bonhoeffer Today, Veronica Ertis-Kojima Jan 1981

The Significance Of Dietrich Bonhoeffer Today, Veronica Ertis-Kojima

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The title of this thesis is “The Significance of Dietrich Bonhoeffer Today.” I intend to discuss and show, with the data obtained through research, that the life and thought of Dietrich Bonhoeffer addresses individuals and/or Christian communities in today’s world in their concern for specific issues regarding Christian and contemporary living. From the data I gathered, I found that Bonhoeffer spoke to three categories of individuals and/or Christian communities; that is, he spoke to theologians and lay individuals within the Christian tradition, to the institutional manifestations of the Christian Church, and to intellectuals outside of the Christian tract. I found …

Lds Church Educational Objectives And Motivational Influences For Seminary Attendance: A Comparative Analysis, Linda Brockbank

Theses and Dissertations

This study addressed itself to identifying dominant motivational influences prompting seminary attendance of ninth and eleventh grade students living along the Wasatch Front in the state of Utah and to determine if these motivational influences were related to stated objectives of the LDS seminary program. The sample consisted of twelve randomly selected cluster groups of seminary classes from the Ogden, Salt Lake City, and Provo-Orem areas. Factors relative to stated objectives and to entertainment were incorporated in the survey questionnaire, Survey of Attendance Rationale, used for data collection. Data were collected in February 1981 and submitted to factor analysis, …

Attitudes And Attained Esl Proficiency Among First Generation Swedish Mormon Immigrants, Cecilia Nihlen Jan 1981

Attitudes And Attained Esl Proficiency Among First Generation Swedish Mormon Immigrants, Cecilia Nihlen

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis project, the relationship between attitudes toward target and native culture groups and attained ESL proficiency among immigrants was evaluated. The subjects were thirty adult native Swedes, all members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who had spent an average of 29 years in the United States. Fourteen were members of a Swedish-speaking branch, while sixteen were members of English-speaking wards. Significant differences were found in immigrants' attitudes toward the culture groups. High English proficiency related positively with a more positive attitude toward the target culture group. Those demonstrating high proficiency viewed the general native …

Measuring The Reading Level Of Lds Materials: A Supplement To The Dale Word List, Linda Stahle Jan 1981

Measuring The Reading Level Of Lds Materials: A Supplement To The Dale Word List, Linda Stahle

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to supplement the Dale word list with a list of terms that are familiar to most members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and thus increase the precision of the Dale-Chall readability formula when it is applied to LDS materials. The Dale word list consists of 3,000 words that are familiar to 80 percent of fourth graders. The procedure involved identifying non-Dale words that occur frequently in LDS church publications and testing them on LDS fourth graders in a three-alternative multiple-choice format.

Of the 850 words tested, 249 were identified correctly …

Baptism, Confirmation And First Communion: Christian Initiation In The Contemporary Church, Hans Boehringer Jan 1981

Baptism, Confirmation And First Communion: Christian Initiation In The Contemporary Church, Hans Boehringer

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

Made, Not Born, is the title of a remarkable book produced by the remarkable program of liturgical studies conducted at the University of Notre Dame, and also the title of Frank Quinn's keynote address yesterday. The correspondence of the two titles is surely no accident. The notion that Christians are made and not born may well come as a shock not only to Lutherans but to all those Christians that prize the Reformation emphasis on the priority of grace. We have for so long insisted on the gift character of baptism that such a title jars. A Christian is …

Clinton Larson's "The Witness": The Quest For A Mormon Mythic Consciousness, Dennis R. Perry Jan 1981

Clinton Larson's "The Witness": The Quest For A Mormon Mythic Consciousness, Dennis R. Perry

Theses and Dissertations

"The Witness" can be viewed as Clinton F. Larson's poetic manifesto that points the direction for much of his subsequent work. Although his poetic "mormonism" has been questioned by several of his critics, this thesis shows that Larson definitely expresses his Mormon faith in "The Witness" as a metaphorical quest for mythic consciousness. While searching in the poem for sacred space and time, Larson seeks to become closer to the divine and powerful center of being, creating at once a metaphor for his quest to understand and assimilate Christ's atonement and a poetic voice from which he can speak for …

Roethke’S "Meditations Of An Old Woman": A Myth And Ritual For Dying, Christopher K. Bennett Dec 1980

Roethke’S "Meditations Of An Old Woman": A Myth And Ritual For Dying, Christopher K. Bennett

Masters Theses

In "Meditations of an Old Woman," Theodore Roethke poetically encountered death, speaking through the persona of an old woman approaching the end of life. The pattern she follows, wandering through her memory in search of the maiden she once was, is also found in the myth of Demeter and Persephone, which was ritualized in the Eleusinian Mysteries of ancient Greece. The poem, myth, and ritual taken together reflect a single archetypal pattern for approaching death; comparing them will reveal the essence of each. Through recollection, the old woman finally unites with her lost youthful self in an epiphany similar to …
