''Three hackneyed terms," some one may say. "Why waste valuable time on them when there are greater subjects to discuss?" But are there? Is it not true that, If we really knew what these terms signify, if we knew not only their dictionary definition, but were thoroughly intimate with them by much contemplation, consideration, and cultivation, ''tasting, touching, and handling them," gratefully and reverently, there would be a great change in our attitude and mode of life, a rejuvenation of our spiritual energies, the suppression of the spirit of pessimism and lethargy, and the beginning of a new era of …

The Progressive Self-Culture Of A Lutheran Pastor, John Weidenschilling

Bachelor of Divinity

During his three years at the seminary the theological student is taught the qualifications and requirements of a Lutheran pastor, and he is informed of the tremendous responsibilities and the exacting demands which a call into the ministry will lay upon him when he has become a pastor of a congregation. But the seminary training is not able to convert the student into a full-fledged pastor. Only long years of hard study and practical experience and divine grace can equip a man successfully and completely for this greatest and hardest calling and work in this world. Unless the ministerial candidate, …

Volume 07: 1936-37, St. Mary’S Of The Barrens Seminary (Missouri)

De Andrein

A major achievement of the students of St. Mary’s of the Barrens was the regular publication of their student newspaper. Originally titled, The Andrean, it began as a typewritten, hand illustrated piece that appears to have been circulated among the student body from 1928 to 1930. In November 1930, the format and title changed to The DeAndrein. The printed newspaper included copies of photographs, and was offered for sale to alumni, family, and friends. This informative publication continued uninterrupted until 1965. Many issues of The DeAndrein (newsletter) from June 1940 to December 1963; various programs, goals, directions, etc.; many pamphlets …

Sermon Study For The Third Sunday After Trinity, Theo. Laetsch Jul 1936

Sermon Study For The Third Sunday After Trinity, Theo. Laetsch

Concordia Theological Monthly

With a few strokes of his pen, Luke had in the preceding verses presented an accurate picture of the life and activities of the early Christian Church. Peacefully and undisturbed by the enemies of Christ, the apostles went about their daily duty of preaching and performing wonders and signs. In chapter 3 Luke singles out one of these miracles, which gave to two of the apostles a special opportunity to proclaim the Gospel before a vast assembly and which was the occasion for the first open opposition on the part of the leaders of the people, chap. 4, 1. As …
