This Article looks at the conflict between religious authority and liberal politics from a point of view within the Catholic Church. It examines the grounds of the teaching authority asserted by the Church, the scope and strength of that authority, and the possibility that obedience to authority will create dilemmas for religiously committed public officials. For purposes of illustration it uses New York Governor Mario Cuomo's religious and political observations on the subject of abortion.

Living Word Or Dead(Ly) Letter: The Encounter Between The New Testament And Contemporary Experience, Sandra Marie Schneiders
Living Word Or Dead(Ly) Letter: The Encounter Between The New Testament And Contemporary Experience, Sandra Marie Schneiders
Jesuit School of Theology
In one sense the question about the relationship between Scripture and Christian experience is an ancient one, usually formulated as the question about the relationship between Scripture and tradition. The modern discussion of this relationship began in the sixteenth century when, for diametrically opposed reasons, both Protestants and Catholics escalated the distinction between Scripture and tradition into a virtual separation.
Stoical Sanctity: The Ethics Of Virtue And The Theology Of Robertson Davies, Eric Richard Griffin
Stoical Sanctity: The Ethics Of Virtue And The Theology Of Robertson Davies, Eric Richard Griffin
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Robertson Davies is, by his own definition and admission, both a religious novelist and a moralist. His writings evince a consistent theology that, aside from one or two departures, is quite within the liberal protestant tradition, despite his own claims to unorthodoxy. His theology is a moral theology, and the ethical theory or method most in keeping with Davies‘ approach is the "virtue" or "character" model. His claims of dualism and unorthodoxy have been seen to exhibit a "contemporary gnostic spirit," but it is my assertion that they do not; the teachings of the ancient Stoics, however, are much in …

Current Models In Roman, Lutheran, And Reformed Prolegomena: Exposition, Analysis, And Programmatic Assessment, David Lumpp
Current Models In Roman, Lutheran, And Reformed Prolegomena: Exposition, Analysis, And Programmatic Assessment, David Lumpp
Doctor of Theology Dissertation
The marketplace is currently experiencing no shortage of systematic theologies. At both the popular and academic levels, volumes are published at a rate exceeding the ability of any one scholar to digest or evaluate. The methodological pluralism alluded to above is now a cacophony. Yesterday’s mentors are challenged by process theology, theologies of hope, and seemingly infinite manifestations of liberation theology--to name only several of the most obvious.
With this history and the above cautions in mind, this essay will explore the definition, guiding motif, and methodology of three major contemporary theologians: Bernard Lonergan, Helmut Thielicke, and Edward Farley, representing …

His Name Was Jonas: A Biography Of Jonas Swensson, Emmet E. Eklund
His Name Was Jonas: A Biography Of Jonas Swensson, Emmet E. Eklund
Augustana Historical Society Publications
Abstract:
The life of Jonas Swensson (1828-1873) presents a reversal of the common notion that sons of famous fathers often live in the shadow of their fathers’ fame. For Jonas Swensson was overshadowed by the fame of his illustrious son, Carl Aaron. Both the fame of his son and his own early death, at age forty-five, have tended to obscure the noteworthy accomplishments of Jonas Swensson. Yet Swensson played a significant role in the shaping of the Augustana Lutheran Church in the last half of the 19th century. His contributions to parish and higher education, mission, congregational life, and the …

Justification In The Eastern Orthodox Churches (A Comparative Study), Eshetu Abate
Justification In The Eastern Orthodox Churches (A Comparative Study), Eshetu Abate
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The topic of this Thesis, Justification in the Eastern Orthodox Churches, is prompted by the document which recently came out of the U.S. Lutheran-Roman Catholic Dialogue on the doctrine of Justification by faith alone, work which took more than five years ending in September 1983. To one who comes from the East, especially from Ethiopia, a country where half of the population is Orthodox, the reading of the publicity on this dialogue and its outcome raised the question: "How do the Orthodox Churches in the East think about justification by faith alone?" The incubation of this idea yielded the present …
Prophetic Consciousness: Obedience And Dissent In The Religious Life, Sandra Marie Schneiders
Prophetic Consciousness: Obedience And Dissent In The Religious Life, Sandra Marie Schneiders
Jesuit School of Theology
Discipleship, as we all know, is a vocation to which one can never respond in a final and definitive way. It is a call to ongoing conversion, to an ever deeper appreciation of the mystery of Christ. To be a disciple is to incarnate the identity and mission of Jesus in our own personal, historical, and cultural context. For us, then, discipleship means living ever more deeply and effectively the mystery of Christ in the American Church of the late twentieth century.
There is a characteristic of our recent American Catholic experience that is at once glaringly evident and profoundly …
The Unity Of The Virtues In Abelard's Dialogus, G. Scott Davis
The Unity Of The Virtues In Abelard's Dialogus, G. Scott Davis
Religious Studies Faculty Publications
That a thinker discusses a topic is often noted, while how he discusses that topic is left insufficiently clear. A case in point is Peter Abelard, "who," D. E. Luscombe has claimed, "first in his time attempted a serious philosophical discussion of natural virtue and who first really put the human virtues upon the theological map." Despite continuing interest in Abelard, and his ethics in particular, little has been done to illuminate what he takes a virtue to be, how the virtues are interrelated, and how Abelard's account compares to other treatments of the virtues. This paper attempts, if only …
