To Know The One True God: Reconciling The God Of The Old Testament With The God Of The New Testament, Kelly D. Newman

Theses and Dissertations

There is a popular misconception in the world that Jehovah is too severe on occasion while Jesus Christ is always kind and merciful. The Latter-day Saint belief that Jehovah and Jesus are the same person presents a supposed conflict. There has not been much written on this subject by either non-Latter-day Saints or Latter-day Saints, thus, this thesis represents a unique contribution to a common perception prevalent in many Christian circles. The research of this thesis shows that the misconception is based on three problems: first, a misinterpretation of biblical stories in both the Old and New Testament; second, a …

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The thesis examines two different reformist approaches to Islamic law in general and women's rights in particular. Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na'im and Khaled Abou El Fadl are chosen as the focus of this study because of their respective innovative approaches to a historically controversial issue. The focus is on the Qur'anic verses and various definitive texts in Qur'an or al-nas qati al-delalah. Discussed is the historical context of the scholars interpretation of the Qur'anic verses; the relationship between the historical context of the Qura'nic verses and the occasions for which the Quranic verses were revealed to the Prophet; any differences between …

The Effectiveness Of Illustrations In Preaching: Understanding And Retaining Biblical Truths, Ronald Rall May 2006

The Effectiveness Of Illustrations In Preaching: Understanding And Retaining Biblical Truths, Ronald Rall

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

This project explored how illustrations function in sermons to facilitate the understanding and retention of Biblical truths. Personal interviews with members of the congregation and focus groups that evaluated sermons provided feedback and insights related to the effectiveness of illustrations in preaching. The researcher compiled responses from the interviews and the focus groups to draw some conclusions about how illustrations function most effectively in aiding comprehension and facilitating an effective hearing of the message. On the basis of this study the researcher offers recommendations that preachers may find helpful in using illustrations in their preaching.

Developing And Implementing A Lifestyle Evangelism Culture, Ronald A. Bogs

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

The purpose of this project is to educate as many members of St. Matthew Lutheran Church of Westfield, Houston, Texas, near Spring, Texas (a Houston suburb), as possible in the ways of witnessing; to teach that everyone is a witness; to change the attitudes of the members to being more aware of the unchurched and more open to bringing them to church; to teach the members to be aware of opportunities for witnessing; and to insure ongoing improvement in the lives of the members so that they are confident and aware of the challenge to bear witness of one's faith …

Angels And The Future Of The Elect, Tina Ziemnick May 2006

Angels And The Future Of The Elect, Tina Ziemnick

Master of Art Theology Thesis

As a Director of Christian Education in a parish, I encountered many youth and adults who believed that people become angels at death. As I talked with them, I realized that they were looking for comfort and hope in a world filled with uncertainty and tragedy. They wanted a picture of eternity and this notion of dying and becoming an angel made the concept of eternal life tangible. As I talked with other DCEs and Pastors I found that they had similar conversations with members of their congregations.' The frequency of these conversations within my professional meetings as well as …

The "Unhistorical" Gospel Of Judas, Thomas A. Wayment May 2006

The "Unhistorical" Gospel Of Judas, Thomas A. Wayment

BYU Studies

This article discusses the Gospel of Judas, an Early Christian text found in Egypt about 1978 and published in 2006 with much media attention. One of the questions raised by the discovery of the Gospel of Judas is whether it includes any credible historical information. The author examines the physical document itself, internal textual references, and comparative analysis to conclude that the Gospel of Judas contains no new historical details. While the manuscript reveals little about Jesus or Judas, readers who study it can discover more about Gnostic beliefs.

Judas In The New Testament, The Restoration, And The Gospel Of Judas, Frank F. Judd-Jr. May 2006

Judas In The New Testament, The Restoration, And The Gospel Of Judas, Frank F. Judd-Jr.

BYU Studies

This article discusses the Gospel of Judas, an Early Christian text found in Egypt about 1978 and published in 2006 with much media attention. The text of the Gospel of Judas can be evaluated by comparing New Testament scriptures. The author examines canonical references to Judas and concludes that Latter-day Saints may benefit from studying the Gospel of Judas to better understand the nature of the apostasy that occurred after the death of Christ's apostles. However, the author reaffirms that Latter-day Saints should not scour this and other noncanonical books looking for the plain and precious truths believed to be …

The Apocryphal Judas Revisited, John W. Welch May 2006

The Apocryphal Judas Revisited, John W. Welch

BYU Studies

This article discusses the Gospel of Judas, an Early Christian text found in Egypt about 1978 and published in 2006 with much media attention. What drove the writers of the Gospel of Judas to paint the betraying Apostle in a positive light will most likely remain a mystery. One motive may have been the Gnostic obsession with finding new truths and solving mysteries. Another could have been the Gnostics' rejection of mainstream Christianity and its foundation on Apostles like Peter and Paul. Whatever their motives, the writers of the most recently discovered gospel were not the first to fabricate stories …

The Gnostic Context Of The Gospel Of Judas, Gaye Strathearn May 2006

The Gnostic Context Of The Gospel Of Judas, Gaye Strathearn

BYU Studies

This article discusses the Gospel of Judas, an Early Christian text found in Egypt about 1978 and published in 2006 with much media attention. Discussions about the Gospel of Judas raise questions about Gnosticism. Gaye Strathearn explains that Gnosticism is a name scholars, beginning in the eighteenth century, apply to the teachings of groups outside mainstream Christianity. The Gospel of Judas and the Nag Hammadi texts reveal the Gnostics' unorthodox views, including Judas being a hero, the serpent in Eden being good, and an emphasis on the pursuit of knowledge. Some of their beliefs seem to parallel modern Latter-day Saint …

Two Ancient Roman Plates, John W. Welch, Kelsey D. Lambert May 2006

Two Ancient Roman Plates, John W. Welch, Kelsey D. Lambert

BYU Studies

In 1986, two ancient Roman plates were found in present-day Romania. The authors explain how the plates came to be displayed at BYU, the physical description of the plates, how the plates were inscribed and sealed, their content, their purpose, and the historical use of similar plates. The authors note why the plates may interest Latter-day Saints, namely that the Roman plates have some characteristics in common with the plates of the Book of Mormon—which is significant considering that such artifacts were not known in Joseph Smith's day—and that the practice of sealing documents was to provide a second witness …

The Concept And Use Of Beauty Within The Church, Patrick Greene May 2006

The Concept And Use Of Beauty Within The Church, Patrick Greene

Senior Honors Projects

An empty room with a table at one end and some chairs facing this table hardly sounds like a church. And if a room similar to this were to be used for a church there would doubtless be decorations brought in, altar cloths, candles and a cross or crucifix. It seems to be that the employment of beauty within church services may be more than just a common element of a church service. Through my senior project I plan to come to a better understanding of how and why beauty is used within church services. I plan on looking at …

The Manuscript Of The Gospel Of Judas, S. Kent Brown May 2006

The Manuscript Of The Gospel Of Judas, S. Kent Brown

BYU Studies

This article discusses the Gospel of Judas, an Early Christian text found in Egypt about 1978 and published in 2006 with much media attention. The discovery of the manuscript of the Gospel of Judas raises questions about the manuscript's origin and if it could have been forged. The author discusses the book's similarities to and differences from the Nag Hammadi texts, Christian documents found in 1945. He describes the manuscript's condition when it was found, its contents, and the effect it may have on scholars' research on early Christianity. He also shares his own experience in viewing ancient papyrus documents …

A Latter-Day Saint Colloquium On The Gospel Of Judas: Media And Message, Richard Neitzel Holzapfel May 2006

A Latter-Day Saint Colloquium On The Gospel Of Judas: Media And Message, Richard Neitzel Holzapfel

BYU Studies

Due to the popularity of Dan Brown's novel The Da Vinci Code and the volume of media attention directed at the Gospel of Judas, both of which suggest searching for hidden meanings in religious traditions and alternative ways of viewing Bible texts and mainstream Christianity, BYU Studies addresses the Gospel of Judas through a series of articles. Richard Neitzel Holzapfel introduces the issue by explaining the Latter-day Saint perspective: some scholars question the New Testament narrative and wonder what other ancient, lost documents were left out, but Latter-day Saints view the Gospel of Judas as a text written by apostate …

Religion And Spaces Of Technology: Constructing And Contesting Nation, Transnation, And Place, Lily Kong May 2006

Religion And Spaces Of Technology: Constructing And Contesting Nation, Transnation, And Place, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In this paper, I focus on one particular technological development that has come to influence religious practice in significant ways-religious broadcasting. Whereas computer-mediated communications now garner growing research attention, I have chosen to remember the influence of the older technology of broadcasting for its continued influence on myriad lives. In bringing this focus to bear on another major phenomenon, that of trans nationalism, I have come to understand how religious broadcasting does not contribute in a straightforward, linear fashion to perpetuating transnational identities and communities, but is instead implicated in the assertion of the national in the face of transnational …

Who's In Charge? An Examination Of Societal Impacts On Gender Roles In American And English Witchcraft, Austin J. Buscher '06 Apr 2006

Who's In Charge? An Examination Of Societal Impacts On Gender Roles In American And English Witchcraft, Austin J. Buscher '06

Honors Projects

Since its genesis in the 1970s, American Witchcraft has shown itself to be one of the most forward-looking and tolerant religions in the area of women's roles and gender theory. Women leaders, gay couples, and even polyamorous relationships are all tolerated and encouraged within American Wiccan theology. Although Witchcraft was formed in England in the 1950s, with its move to the U.S. in the 1960s, it was soon appropriated by the growing American feminist movement. With this collation, Witchcraft has become one of the largest and most long-lived new religious movements in America. However, there are many differences between American …

A Key And Classic Text: Ephesians 5:21-33, Katinka Nadine Ellen Evers Apr 2006

A Key And Classic Text: Ephesians 5:21-33, Katinka Nadine Ellen Evers

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

This paper is an exegesis of the difficult pericope of Ephesians 5:21-33, a stumbling block to many, but truly a cornerstone when viewed through Pope John Paul II’s Theology of the Body. After a brief introduction familiarizing readers with the passage, this paper shows how the section is treated by
Patristic authors (with Origen and Saint Jerome as examples), by feminist theologian E. Elizabeth Johnson, and by Peter T. O’Brien (who demonstrates an Evangelical Protestant view). Finally, Pope John Paul II’s theology is introduced, along with his concept of mutual submission and his emphasis on the importance of Ephesians 5:21-33. …

Concealing To Reveal: Modesty In Pope John Paul Ii’S Theology Of The Body, Katinka Nadine Ellen Evers Apr 2006

Concealing To Reveal: Modesty In Pope John Paul Ii’S Theology Of The Body, Katinka Nadine Ellen Evers

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

Responding to a need in the sphere of serious academic scholarship to address the topic of modesty, this paper delves into that theme. It examines the use and importance of the term ‘modesty’ in relation to comparable words, providing a definition of modesty that is useful for further theological discussion. It then incorporates Pope John Paul II’s Theology of the Body as a helpful tool in understanding the concept of modesty. Finally, this paper concludes with some implications this theological exercise entails, both for the particular sphere of sexual morality, and the broader spectrum of anthropological questions such as the …

Sir Thomas Browne’S Annotated Copy Of His 1642 Religio Medici, Brooke Conti Apr 2006

Sir Thomas Browne’S Annotated Copy Of His 1642 Religio Medici, Brooke Conti

English Faculty Publications

Although relatively few readers today may have heard of Sir Thomas Browne (1605–1682), the works of this essayist, doctor, and amateur scientist cast long literary shadows. Among those influenced or inspired by Browne are Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Herman Melville, Virginia Woolf, Jorge Luis Borges, and W. G. Sebald. The admiration of later generations has to do in part with Browne’s style, for he is widely regarded as one of the finest prose writers in the English language. However, Browne’s wide-ranging intellectual interests, his love of paradoxes, and his playful personality have surely also contributed to his popularity. Combining a skeptical, …
