The Relationship Of The Church To The National Culture In America, Ernest B. Koenker Nov 1954

The Relationship Of The Church To The National Culture In America, Ernest B. Koenker

Concordia Theological Monthly

As one considers the cultural complex of America today, there are a number of questions which might present themselves to the Christian living under the Word. What are the values which underlie our national culture, and is there any sense in which these are being absolutized today in some kind of Messianism? Can one say that the Christian churches in America, or the Lutheran Church, have profoundly shaped our culture, or have the churches themselves been thoroughly shaped by the culture? In view of the loss or muffling of a dynamic Christian witness in many of the American denominations, what …

Principles For Winning Unchurched High School Youth For Christ, Raymond Mueller Jun 1954

Principles For Winning Unchurched High School Youth For Christ, Raymond Mueller

Bachelor of Divinity

Winning people for Christ includes, necessarily, these two main emphases: namely, evangelism and Christian Education. Those are the two emphases used both by the apostles and by the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod of our own day. To these two emphases must be added that of youth work in general. Thus, this study forms a synthesis of Christian education, evangelism, and youth work, and it is an attempt at outlining a program which will best answer the question, "How can the Church win the unchurched youth for Christ?"

Christian Participation In The Second World War, Ralph Moellering Jun 1954

Christian Participation In The Second World War, Ralph Moellering

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Naturally the "conclusions” drawn by the writer are subjective to the extent that they are based on his own findings and no one person can pretend to be cognizant of all the data that would be relevant to a study so comprehensive in scope. Nor would we deny that our ultimate aim in offering this thesis is didactic and hortative. We will endeavor to uncover some of the shortcomings and past mistakes of the established churches, and we will indicate what we believe to be some correctives and safeguards for the future.

The Person And Work Of The Holy Spirit Implicit In The Proclamation Of John The Baptist, Walter Rosin

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The primary purpose of .this thesis will not; be to determine the correct interpretation of this entire phrase, but to determine what the hearers of John understood when he announced “He shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” A secondary purpose of this thesis will be to arrive at a clearer understanding of the concept; of the Holy Spirit.

The Word In The Word, Walter R. Roehrs Feb 1954

The Word In The Word, Walter R. Roehrs

Concordia Theological Monthly

By formulation our topic also asks us to think of these terms as a given relationship to each other: the Word in the Word. Thus the problem is stated. Two concepts, identical to the that they can be represented by the same semantic symbol, and be differentiated from each other by their relationship to each other. In a somewhat less cryptic form our topic could also be What is the relationship between the Word made flesh and the written Word of Scripture.

The Washington Federation Of Churches With Emphasis On A Survey Sponsored By The Department Of Radio And Television, Eleanor Mauze Jan 1954

The Washington Federation Of Churches With Emphasis On A Survey Sponsored By The Department Of Radio And Television, Eleanor Mauze

Student Scholarship

This paper provides a detailed examination of the Washington Federation of Churches, focusing specifically on its efforts to utilize mass media for religious outreach in the mid-twentieth century. Formally organized in 1920, the Federation grew from a small group of sixty congregations into a major ecumenical body representing twenty-seven denominations by 1954. The organization was established to meet the social, moral, and religious needs of the Washington, D. C. area through cooperative action that individual churches could not achieve alone. By the time of this study, the Federation operated through an intricate structure of governing councils, standing committees, and nine …

The History Of The Drama In Corinne And Brigham City, Utah, 1855-1905, Rue Corbett Johnson Jan 1954

The History Of The Drama In Corinne And Brigham City, Utah, 1855-1905, Rue Corbett Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

It is hoped that through the inclusion of the history of the drama in Corinne, Utah, some interesting contrasts can be shown. Such contrasts are heightened when it Is realized that geographically the two towns are very close and that unlike Brigham City, and other Utah towns, Corinne was non-Mormon. During its zenith it undoubtedly reflected the typical frontier town characteristics more than did the Mormon town nearby. This fact provides opportunity for comparison of two societies as reflected in their dramatic activities. This comparison should assist in evaluating the history and contributions of Mormon dramatic activity by helping to …

The Pastoral Care Of Neurotis, C. Adam Aug 1953

The Pastoral Care Of Neurotis, C. Adam

Concordia Theological Monthly

Neurosis is one of the most common forms of behavior abnormality. The easy explanation which placed the blame on heredity is losing ground. Recent studies show that environmental strains and pressures as well as unfavorable childhood experiences are receiving greater emphasis as causative factors. Most people are unaware of the nature of their conflict. They only know the symptoms: frustration, unhappiness, obsessions, strange compulsions, fears that they cannot account for, ailments that seem to have no physical basis. In most cases these emotional difficulties do not stop people from doing their work nor from carrying on their social activities. Yet …

The Significance Of Luther's Hermeneutics For The Protestant Reformation, Raymond P. Surburg Apr 1953

The Significance Of Luther's Hermeneutics For The Protestant Reformation, Raymond P. Surburg

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Protestant Reformation, called by Roman Catholics the Protestant Revolt, is generally conceded to have been one of the most significant movements in the last two thousand years of world history. Historians who have treated the Reformation have interpreted it from at least four distinct points of view: the religious-political, the rationalist, the liberal-romantic, and the economic-evolutionary. A current scholar, Rosenstock-Huessy, lists the Protestant Reformation as the first of four political revolutions occurring between 1517 and 1918.

The Confirmation Instruction Of Children, Harold Dorn Mar 1953

The Confirmation Instruction Of Children, Harold Dorn

Concordia Theological Monthly

Purpose. We are all interested in improving our confirmation instruction. It was thought that one of the most practical ideas to find out how we might improve our individual techniques would be to make a survey of what our brethren were doing in the field. Such a study would indicate what materials and procedures were in use, our principal difficulties, and such matters that needed special study. The study might also point up new ideas and trends.
