Truth's Bright Embrace: Essays and Poems in Honor of Arthur O. Roberts

Perhaps one of the most significant developments among American Friends during this last century was the 1970 St. Louis Conference. Uniquely among Quaker conferences, "official" delegates were appointed by all the yearly meetings of Friends in the U. S. and Canada. The appointees of two yearly meetings were unable to attend for health or other last-minute emergencies, but no yearly meeting boycotted the Conference. In accordance with Friends' principles, the group could not legislate, but position papers were presented for FUM, FGC, and (the then) EFA.

Truth's Bright Embrace: Essays and Poems in Honor of Arthur O. Roberts

In Arthur Roberts' excellent volume reflecting on his life, Drawn By The Light, he briefly describes his involvement in state and local politics. He ran unsuccessfully for a position in the Oregon Legislature and later served a four-year term on the Yachats, Oregon, City Council. It was not easy for Arthur to bridge the gulf between the intellectual depth and erudite vocabulary of the scholar and the rough and tumble of state and local politics. But he felt that these political involvements had "quickened my appreciation for ordinary activity as the true vocation for the church." Arthur took his city …

The news media often characterizes some detractors of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as “Mormon intellectuals” and presents them to the public as the thinking Mormons who know the inside story of the church. In this rush to produce controversial news, an obvious truth has been overlooked—that the LDS intellectual and academic communities are composed of strong believers in the Prophet Joseph Smith’s revelations and solid supporters of LDS Church leadership. Only at the fringes is there noticeable dissent.
