Special Problems Affecting The Educational Task Of The Churches With A Chinese Language Ministry, Andrew Ch'iu

Concordia Theological Monthly

There are many problems under each of these headings, and many different solutions have been proposed for them. The main purpose of this paper is not to attempt to solve the problems but to point them out as starters for our discussion. Any suggested solutions in this paper are not meant to be final.

A History Of The Deseret Alphabet, Larry Ray Wintersteen Jan 1970

A History Of The Deseret Alphabet, Larry Ray Wintersteen

Theses and Dissertations

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during the years 1852-1877, introduced to its membership a form of rhetoric (writing system) called the deseret alphabet (phonetic alphabet). This experiment was intended to alleviate the problem of non-communication which was created by the great influx of foreign speaking Saints into the great Salt Lake Valley.
The alphabet was developed and encouraged by the Prophet Brigham Young and a few followers. Much to their dismay the members of the Church did not have the same vision of its workability as did its promoters.
This new alphabet appears not to have met …

Erasmus The Exegete, Marvin Anderson Dec 1969

Erasmus The Exegete, Marvin Anderson

Concordia Theological Monthly

Erasmus appears everywhere in the theological controversies of the 16th century. Discovery in 1506 of his beloved Lorenzo Valla's New Testament Notes encouraged Erasmus to continue the task of editing, annotating, and paraphrasing the New Testament. Whatever can be said about Erasmus, his dedication to this task has earned the gratitude of generations of Christians. His latest encomium is Erasmus of Christendom. An analysis of Erasmus’ devotion to New Testament study adds depth and breadth to the philosophy of Christ. Heirs of the 16th century should ponder the life work of Erasmus in this 500th anniversary of his birth. In …

Methods In Studying The Biblical Text Today, John Reumann Nov 1969

Methods In Studying The Biblical Text Today, John Reumann

Concordia Theological Monthly

A rich variety of methods exists today for studying Scripture - text criticism, philology, literary criticism; source, form, and redaction criticism, Religionsgeschichte, and a host of other "Geschichten" - so that the Bible is probably the world's most closely and minutely studied book. But how can all these techniques be put together into a method, in the classical sense of meth' hodos, a "way" "after" something, a way for getting from one point to another, from the text to the practical goal that concerns us here, proclaiming or communicating the text today?

A Study Of Omoiωma In Romans 6:5, John Bauer

Bachelor of Divinity

It is the purpose of this paper to review some of the answers that theologians have proposed to these questions. A further objective, on the basis of the proposed solutions to the problem, is an attempt to formulate a statement of what St. Paul did mean by this word (if this is possible!),and then to suggest some further areas of study which appear’ essential for a satisfactory determination of the meaning and force of ὄμοίωμα.

The Gospel And Political Structures, Jobst Schoene Jun 1969

The Gospel And Political Structures, Jobst Schoene

Concordia Theological Monthly

The situation which suggests this theme is unique in more than one respect. Hardly ever in the history of theology has there been such intensive and impassioned questioning and contention concerning the relations between the gospel and political structures as today. That this is true also of the discussion within the Lutheran churches becomes evident the moment one investigates the problems posed by the concepts "gospel'' and "political structures." The rapid change of the political structures all over the world renders the answers from the Lutheran tradition, which have only too often been identified with the statements of Scripture and …

The Background And The First Twenty-Five Years Of The Missouri Evangelical Lutheran India Mission, 1894-1919, Herbert Manthey Zorn

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this study is to examine the first twenty-five years of the history of the Missouri Evangelical Lutheran India Mission. The chief emphasis in the study is understanding the situation and conditions in which various decisions were taken. This will involve investigation of primary documents, letters, reports, and, where possible, interviews with the actual persons involved.

A Survey Of Trends And Problems In Biblical Interpretation, Edgar Krentz May 1969

A Survey Of Trends And Problems In Biblical Interpretation, Edgar Krentz

Concordia Theological Monthly

Any man fool enough to accept the assignment described in the title above deserves his fate. He is like the mythological traveler approaching ancient Thebes. To go forward means to meet the Sphinx and her dread riddle; to miss the answer means to be thrown headlong down a precipitous cliff and face destruction. Yet the possibility that one may deprive Oedipus of his glory by answering the riddle leads one to trudge along the dusty path under the hot sun.

The Place Of The Law-Gospel Polarity In The Hermeneutical Theology Of Gerhard Ebeling, David G. Truemper May 1969

The Place Of The Law-Gospel Polarity In The Hermeneutical Theology Of Gerhard Ebeling, David G. Truemper

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The present study is an attempt to investigate, in the work of one of the theologians primarily responsible for the contemporary interest in hermeneutical problems, the role that the Law-Gospel Polarity plays in the process of hermeneutics. Gerhard Ebeling, a one-time student of Rudolf Bultmann whose work was first introduced to American theologians by James M. Robinson under the label, “The Hew Hermeneutic,” was chosen as the subject of this investigation because of the extensive use that he makes of the distinction between the Law and the Gospel, and because of his frequent appeals to, and his many studies in, …

Legalism In An Evangelical Church, J. P. Koehler Mar 1969

Legalism In An Evangelical Church, J. P. Koehler

Concordia Theological Monthly

The essay that follows developed from a remark that the author made at one of the larger intersynodical conferences. The remark was to the effect that there is much legalism rampant in our circles, that the result is stagnation and retrogression in all areas of church life, and that for this reason sincere and general repentance is necessary before we may anticipate a turn for the better. The expression "legalism in our circles" was not generally understood. It was intended to describe one aspect of all our activity in thought, speech, and endeavor, based on a comprehensive observation of life …

The Gospel As Formulated In The Apostolic Tradition: An Exegetical Examination Of 1 Corinthians 15:1-11, David Yagow Feb 1969

The Gospel As Formulated In The Apostolic Tradition: An Exegetical Examination Of 1 Corinthians 15:1-11, David Yagow

Bachelor of Divinity

But this pericope is not intended merely to clarify Paul’s doctrine of eschatology. It is obvious that Paul wants to straighten out some muddleheaded thinking and to enunciate anew the historic kernel of the kerygma. But the pericope has a double function. It serves also to validate Paul’s apostolic credentials as an heir to the earliest tradition. Paul establishes his authority, authenticity, and reliability as an apostolic witness before he moves from the kerygmatic summary to unfold his elaborate argument in support of the necessity of the resurrection.

Haggadah In Jewish Bible Study, Etan B. Levine Feb 1969

Haggadah In Jewish Bible Study, Etan B. Levine

Concordia Theological Monthly

Christian Biblical interpreters adopted and adapted the interpretative principles and methods of their Jewish and Greek teachers and neighbors whenever and insofar as they judged them to be compatible with the Biblical text. One method of Scriptural interpretation and application in Judaism was that of Haggadah. Jesus used a form of this method when in Matt. 12:1-7 He added an interpretative story (Haggadah) about David and his soldiers to the Biblical principle that Yahweh desires mercy and not sacrifice.

The Congregation Of Christ-A Charismatic Body, Walter J. Bartling Feb 1969

The Congregation Of Christ-A Charismatic Body, Walter J. Bartling

Concordia Theological Monthly

My original assignment was a little vague. I knew I was to deal with the New Testament materials which treat in general with the subject of charismatic gifts. There would be other specialized presentations on specific gifts. It was not until I received a promotional brochure that I was given a formulated subject: “The Lordship of Jesus and Charisma for His Body." This formulation of the subject and the slogan for the conference, "Jesus is Lord," suddenly made it quite clear to me how I should approach my topic. There is really only one passage in the New Testament in …
