The Arrest Of Jesus: An Exegesis Of Matthew 26:47-56, Michael Schmidt

Master of Sacred Theology Seminar Papers

This paper will examine Matthew 26: 47-56, the arrest of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. Only the larger context of Matthew and what Matthew had available to him (i.e., the Old Testament) will be drawn upon to understand this pericope. This paper has been divided into the following parts: I)Translation and Notes, II) Limits, Structure, and Themes, and III) Genre and Literary Setting, IV) Concluding Thoughts.

Ministratores Verbi In Fidem Remissionis Gospel And Ministry In Luther's Writings To 1520, William Schumacher May 1996

Ministratores Verbi In Fidem Remissionis Gospel And Ministry In Luther's Writings To 1520, William Schumacher

Master of Sacred Theology Seminar Papers

The scope of this study is explicitly and intentionally (and hence, perhaps, artificially) limited to Luther's early writings, up to and including the milestone works of1520. It will seek to pay attention to detail, but makes no claim of being exhaustive. We will explore how Luther came to confess the gospel when speaking about the office of the holy ministry. Or, to put the question another way, what happened to the doctrine and vocabulary of the ministry when the gospel began to make itself heard in Luther's thinking, teaching, and preaching?

Isaiah's Damascus Oracle: Responding To International Threats, Harald Schoubye May 1996

Isaiah's Damascus Oracle: Responding To International Threats, Harald Schoubye

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

I propose the following theses: (1) since Isaiah 17-18 fit under the same superscription we therefore should and can interpret them as one unit;(2) and that Isaiah 1-16 supplies the reader with the necessary information to interpret Isaiah 17-18 sufficiently. I believe we will find a unity supported by the composition of Isaiah 17-18, by the themes and metaphors in Isaiah 17-18, and through the events that Isaiah 17-18 describe.

The method that I will use to prove this thesis will be to study the information both external to the text and internal to it. First, I will seek to …

Use Of Ek Πι∑Τεω∑ In Romans And Galatians: The Significance Of Paul’S Choice Of Prepositions With Πι∑Τει∑ As Object And Its Bearing Upon Justification By Faith, Andrew John Spallek

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In addressing the current debate concerning Paul's explanation of justification by faith as it pertains to Jews and to gentiles, the present study will examine the meaning of ὲκ πίστεως in Paul and its bearing on justification by faith. The approach to this examination will be rather complex. In order to arrive at a precise meaning for ὲκ πίστεως, it is essential that the word πίστις be thoroughly examined, especially its connection to the Old Testament concept of faith (אכזד). In order to differentiate between ὲκ πίστεως and other prepositional phrases with πίστις it will be necessary to examine the …

On Being Mormon In Canada And Canadian In Utah, Maureen Ursenbach Beecher Apr 1996

On Being Mormon In Canada And Canadian In Utah, Maureen Ursenbach Beecher

BYU Studies

Peter Gzowski, a name unpronouncable to Americans, is a byword to Canadians. Weekday mornings, CBC radio listeners hear his wry comments and sage interviews reflecting Canadian life on Morningside. In the mid-seventies, when Morningside was still This Country in the Morning, Gzowski ran a contest asking listeners to finish this sentence: "As Canadian as..." Entries poured in: "As Canadian as a toboggan" or "As Canadian as Diefenbaker." But the grand-slam winner was unforgettable: "As Canadian as possible, under the circumstances."

A Theology Of Word And Spirit: Donald Bloesch's Theological Method, Elmer M. Colyer Jan 1996

A Theology Of Word And Spirit: Donald Bloesch's Theological Method, Elmer M. Colyer

Journal for Christian Theological Research

One of the distinctive characteristics of Donald G. Bloesch's evangelical theology is his theological method. Bloesch proposes "a theology of Word and Spirit" in which the action of the Spirit brings the Word of God (Jesus Christ) present, yet hidden, in Scripture to light so that people hear and respond in faith. The Spirit is given the primary role in forging a conjunction between the human and historical words of Bible and divine revelation never at human disposal. The rigorous application of this theme leads to characteristic reformulations of various elements in Bloesch's theological method including revelation, Scripture, hermeneutics, authority, …

Truth's Bright Embrace: Essays and Poems in Honor of Arthur O. Roberts

One of my favorite Far Sides shows a spider on an analyst's couch, saying, "It's the same dream night after night...I walk out on my web, and suddenly a foot sticks-and then another foot sticks, and another, and another, and another...." Gary Larsen's spider expresses the impression that people who are fascinated by language have: language is like a web. I spin it out thinking that I have it under control, and suddenly it seems I am caught in the system of words. I open my mouth to speak, and suddenly words appear or disappear, the wrong words come, or …

The Dao Of Qoheleth: An Intertextual Reading Of The Daode Jing And The Book Of Ecclesiastes, R. Christopher Heard Jan 1996

The Dao Of Qoheleth: An Intertextual Reading Of The Daode Jing And The Book Of Ecclesiastes, R. Christopher Heard

Religion Division Faculty Scholarship

Of all the world's literary works which may appropriately be labeled religious classics, the Hebrew scriptures and the Daode Jing stand out as two of the most popular across cultural and linguistic boundaries. One might suppose that the cross-cultural popularity of these classics would have brought them into frequent contact with one another. However, not much seems to have been done to relate the Bible to the Daode Jing in a constructive way. In this article, I seek to begin redressing this lack of conversation by offering a reading of the biblical book of Ecclesiastes using the Daode Jing as …

Genre And Outline: The Key To The Literary Structure Of Hebrews, Harald Tomesch Jan 1996

Genre And Outline: The Key To The Literary Structure Of Hebrews, Harald Tomesch

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The primary purpose of this dissertation is to outline the relationship of the opening periodic sentence (Figure 3.1) and its syntactical, grammatical, semantic, exegetical and hermeneutical relationship to the Sermon in Miniature found in Figures 3.2 and 3.3. With this as the primary focus the ground will have been laid for the ongoing appraisal of the sermon as a whole (Figure 3.4). The overall outline of the sermon will be examined briefly so that the reader may understand that the schematic does function in a simple fashion for the rest of the epistle. As we move through the veil of …

Living Word: Sharper Than Any Two-Edged Sword, Edgar Krentz Jan 1996

Living Word: Sharper Than Any Two-Edged Sword, Edgar Krentz

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

The theme for this year's Institute on liturgical Studies-"Grace Upon Grace: Living Word."-describes what should enliven and move every action among God's people. Not only doxological actions, but didactic, kerygmatic, evangelistic, parenetic-you name it, every thought and action should live in and arise out of the living word.l But just what is that living word? The adjective is striking, not the one we usually attach to the term "word" in either its garden variety meaning or its theological sense. Where do you find a living word? The classical answer for many is obvious: in the prophetic and apostolic Scriptures. …
