Toward A Dialogic Interpretation Of Psychological Belief In Spirits Among Gamei Of Ghana, Ebenezer Narh Yebuah
Toward A Dialogic Interpretation Of Psychological Belief In Spirits Among Gamei Of Ghana, Ebenezer Narh Yebuah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examines central aspects of the ancestral tradition of the Gamei of Ghana which have not previously been investigated systematically from a psychological perspective. It is argued that Carl Gustav Jung and his intellectual descendants are the only Western psychological thinkers who have come close to formulating a conceptual framework that is helpful in this context, because Africa featured prominently in Jung's formulations of his influential psychological theories during his archetypal journey to Africa. Accordingly, core features of Jungian theory are examined in order to determine the extent to which a psychological investigation of Gamei cosmological perspectives, particularly perspectives …
Why Two Swords Were Enough: Israelite Tradition History Behind Luke 22:35-38, Kevin Lee Moore
Why Two Swords Were Enough: Israelite Tradition History Behind Luke 22:35-38, Kevin Lee Moore
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Jesus' charge in Luke 22:35-38 that his apostles should buy swords is one of the most enigmatic texts in the gospels. Although previous studies made use of a wide range of standard critical methods, none of these approaches satisfactorily revealed the pericope's meaning. In a fresh re-examination of Luke's sword-logion this project interweaves biblical and cultural intertextuality and asserts that the sword-logion is a Lukan literary foil that repudiates a well-known hagiographic tale. The provenance for this legendary saga (i.e., the "two-sword" traditum) was Gen 34 whose routine refraction in later Jewish writings led to its inclusion as part …

Reclaiming Paul? Reconfiguration As Reclamation In 3 Corinthians, Benjamin L. White
Reclaiming Paul? Reconfiguration As Reclamation In 3 Corinthians, Benjamin L. White
Publications
This article pursues an alternative approach to situating the historical circumstances and rhetorical strategies of the author of 3 Corinthians. Whereas most scholarship on 3 Corinthians has set out to ascertain the specific opponents lurking behind the polemic of the text (Simon Magus, Saturnilus, Marcion, Valentinus, etc.), I believe that this task is futile and that a close reading of the “Paul” constructed by the text’s author pays more fruitful dividends in situating the text. Specifically, I will argue that 3 Corinthians is a late secondcentury proto-orthodox invocation of the “Pastoral” Paul (i.e. the Paul of the Pastoral Epistles), …

The Plurality Of Religions And The Spirit Of Pluralism: A Participatory Vision Of The Future Of Religion, Jorge N. Ferrer
The Plurality Of Religions And The Spirit Of Pluralism: A Participatory Vision Of The Future Of Religion, Jorge N. Ferrer
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
This paper first uncovers the subtle spiritual narcissism that has characterized historical approaches
to religious diversity and discusses the shortcomings of the main forms of religious pluralism that
have been proposed as its antidote: ecumenical, soteriological, postmodern, and metaphysical. It
then argues that a participatory pluralism paves the way for an appreciation of religious diversity that
eschews the dogmatism and competitiveness involved in privileging any particular tradition over the
rest without falling into cultural-linguistic or naturalistic reductionisms. Discussion includes the
question of the validity of spiritual truths and the development of a participatory critical theory of
religion. The essay concludes …
Towards A Transpersonal Psychology Of Daoism: Definitions, Past Research, And Future Directions, Christopher Cott, Adam Rock
Towards A Transpersonal Psychology Of Daoism: Definitions, Past Research, And Future Directions, Christopher Cott, Adam Rock
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
This paper is aimed at facilitating the study of Daoism, a collection of Chinese philosophical
beliefs and psychospiritual practices with a history of thousands of years and a living
community that stretches throughout East Asia, from a transpersonal psychology perspective.
Transpersonal psychologists who wish to embark upon a study of Daoist phenomena
must first be cognizant of the often nebulous parameters of the Daoist field of inquiry.
Therefore, an overview is offered of the two primary Daoist informational sources: the living
Daoist tradition as represented predominantly by the Quanzhen and Tianshi traditions,
and textual sources in collections such as the …

"We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly."
-Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (1963).
Technology, the Internet, and the ability to communicate with one another instantaneously in any place on the globe, at any point in time have made Dr. King's remarks increasingly evident in the 21st century. We now have the unprecedented ability to communicate with people of all groups, all over the world, but are lacking the proper tools for understanding them. The interreligious dialogue movement has strived to utilize religion as one …

South Asian Muslim American Girl Power: Structures And Symbols Of Control And Self Expression, Marcia K. Hermansen, Mahruq F. Khan
Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
South Asian Muslim American (SAMA) girls studied ethnographically in Chicago and more broadly in the United States negotiate these three components (South Asian, Muslim, and American) of identity across the spheres of home, Islamic institutions, and the public “American” realm. . Drawing on interviews and fieldwork at an Islamic school and within South Asian families and mosques, the authors illustrate how nascent “girl” power is evidenced in these contexts drawing on media representations, academic sources, and data drawn from participant observation. Sources of SAMA girls’ expressions of confidence and power are selective use of identity markers, increased mastery of Islamic …

Online Theological Education: Perspectives From First-Generation Asian Americans, Roger S. Nam
Online Theological Education: Perspectives From First-Generation Asian Americans, Roger S. Nam
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
This essay explores the use of online asynchronous discussions from the perspective of first-generation Asian American seminarians. The pedagogical paradigm implicit in these online forums assumes values that compete and even contradict the values these students bring from their native educational experiences. Combined with the language difficulties, asynchronous discussions can present a serious challenge to the educational goals of both the institution and the student. Despite these barriers, first-generation Asian American students often see the incorporation of the asynchronous discussions as a welcome enhancement to their theological education.

Kevin McGeough's Exchange Relationships at Ugarit is a welcome entry into the field of recent studies on Ugarit in the context of Late Bronze Age economies. other leaders, biblical figures such as Joseph, Jacob, Moses, Aaron, Elijah, Elisha, and Isaiah take part in magic (57-62). Chapter 3 also escalates Dolansky's claim about the effect of magic in Israel to a formatively influential factor.

Socially Engaged Buddhist Nuns: Activism In Taiwan And North America, Karma Lekshe Tsomo Phd
Theology and Religious Studies: Faculty Scholarship
The last decades of the twentieth century have been a time of new visibility and social activism for Buddhists in Taiwan and around the world. This paper compares the social engagement of nuns in the Chinese Buddhist tradition in Taiwan and North America. I would like to argue that whereas nuns in Taiwan have developed a variety of approaches to social involvement, their counterparts in the Chinese diaspora in North America have had to face a set of challenges specific to overseas Chinese communities in addition to Chinese Buddhist tradition. The article concludes with reflections on the prospects for nuns' …

This paper considers the Christian teacher’s “place” in today’s increasingly diverse public school classrooms. Specifically, the paper explores the complexities of working as a Christian within educational systems which promote tolerance of all cultures and religious views. Is it possible for a Christian teacher to remain committed to The Way while employed in a system which encourages pluralism, equity, and diversity? Using insights and responses of participants in a Christian university education course on teaching in multicultural classrooms, a framework is provided to consider what it means to teach as a Christian in multicultural school settings.
A Viable Model And Self-Report Measure Of Spiritual Intelligence, David B. King, Teresa L. Decicco
A Viable Model And Self-Report Measure Of Spiritual Intelligence, David B. King, Teresa L. Decicco
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
A four-factor model of spiritual intelligence is first proposed. Supportive evidence is reviewed for the
capacities of critical existential thinking, personal meaning production, transcendental awareness,
and conscious state expansion. Based on this model, a 24-item self-report measure was developed
and modified across two consecutive studies (N = 619 and N = 304, respectively). The final version
of the scale, the Spiritual Intelligence Self-Report Inventory (SISRI-24), displayed excellent internal
reliability and good fit to the proposed model. Correlational analyses with additional measures of
meaning, metapersonal self-construal, mysticism, religiosity, and social desirability offer support
for construct and criterion-related validity. According to both …

"Welcoming The Stranger": A Dialogue Between Scriptural Understandings Of And Catholic Church Policies Towards Migrants And Refugees And Pastoral Praxis In The Migrant And Refugee Pastoral Care Bodies Within The Archdiocese Of Perth, Judith M. Woodward
Theses
Growth in human movement around the world has been one of the phenomenal aspects of globalization since the Second World War. Among these ‘people on the move’ those whom the United Nations Humanitarian Commission for Refugees has described as ‘persons of concern’ – refugees, displaced persons etc. – have increased at an alarming rate. They are now well in excess of the global population growth rate over the same period Many of these have moved into adjacent poorer developing countries but increasingly many are seeking asylum, either through official United Nations’ channels or through on-shore arrivals, in developing nations.
