Radical Hospitality: Height And Excess Of The Other And The New Host Self, Diako Alikhani
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Drawing on Emmanuel Levinas’ ethical framework and its emphasis on the “height and excess” of “the Other,” this thesis explores and develops a sense of “radical hospitality” in Levinas and across Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. In particular, the thesis explores how encounter with the Other is not only marked by an overwhelming excess, but one which transforms the subject into what I call a “New Host Self:” Where the self is the host who greets the stranger with hospitality, it is ultimately the stranger—the refugee, the migrant—who transforms the host into someone new. Here, the host ultimately receives a gift …

The belief system of Muslims is rooted in the Quran and Hadith, with the Five Pillars of Islam and the Pillars of Faith serving as the cornerstone. The fifth pillar of faith enjoins belief in the Day of Judgment, yet regrettably, there exists a lack of awareness among many in this regard. Consequently, this paper presents a comprehensive elucidation of eschatology in Islam, drawing from Quranic verses …

The Pope And The ʿUlamāʾ: A Study Of Religious Institutions And Their Evolving Relationship To Government, Benjamin Newton
Honors Theses
How and why have religious institutions changed during historical critical junctures in their relationship with government? The literature on this topic, with notable but limited exceptions (Brown et al. 2024, Koesel 2014, Fox 2008), has tended to focus on one specific institution at a time, even if analyzing its actions within multiple states. Through this project, I focus not on the same institution in different states, but on two major religious establishments in the states in which they are based. I analyze the Roman Catholic Church and the Wahhābi establishment in Italy and Saudi Arabia, respectively, to come to a …
