The Four Doors Of Islam, Annalisa Orselli-Dickson

Research outputs pre 2011

This paper - written after a visit in 1987 to the Turkish headquarters of the Jerrahiya, one of the Sufic brotherhoods of Islam - wishes to illustrate in a symbolic form one of the main aspects of this spiritual way representing a classical Sufic formulation of the path to God which is doctrinally and methodologically based on the integration of four levels of truth within the single unifying truth of the key formula "La ilaha illa Ilah".

In view of the subtlelty of the esoteric subject it deals with, the gnostic apprehension, which traditionally is recognised to be an activity …

Some Principles Of Christian Mission To Muslims, James S. D. Langford Jun 1983

Some Principles Of Christian Mission To Muslims, James S. D. Langford

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This thesis is an effort to determine what principles should be formulated in Christian mission to Muslims to lead them to the saving power of Jesus Christ. The subject matter has been divided into two parts: 1) information relevant to theological doctrines and 2) the recommendations or findings.

In the first part in regard to the doctrine of sin, Christianity advocates faith in the shed blood of Jesus Christ as the remedy for His believers, while Islam believes that man is good by nature and Allah's remedy is the Quran. Consequently, Muslims do not recognize a- need for salvation in …

Collection & Transmission Of The Qur'an: A Critical Survey Of Western Scholarship, David Addleton Nov 1982

Collection & Transmission Of The Qur'an: A Critical Survey Of Western Scholarship, David Addleton

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A brief review of the history of western interest in the Qur'an from Keaton's 1143 C.E. translation to the present and a comparison between the western and traditional views on the Qur'-am's textual history serves to place the western theories on the collection and transmission of the Qur'an in their historical and intellectual context.

The theories of Richard Bell, John Burton, Leone Caetani, Paul Casanova, Arthur Jeffery Alphonse Mingana, Theodor Ntildeke, John Wansbrough and W. Montgomery Watt are given primary consideration; Nabia Abbot, Hartwig Hirschfeld, D.S. Margolicuth, William Muir and Ajmal Khan receive secondary consideration.

The traditional history of the …

Shah Wali Allah's Arrangement Of The Subtle Spiritual Centers, Marcia K. Hermansen Jan 1982

Shah Wali Allah's Arrangement Of The Subtle Spiritual Centers, Marcia K. Hermansen

Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This paper will present an explanation of some previously unexamined aspects of fillah Wali Allah's (d. 1762) conception of the subtJe spiritual centres (/afii'if). For Shah Wali Allah these spiritual components of a person were of great importance in explaining the theory and practice of individual spiritual progress on the Sufi path. His arrangement of these centres, together with his explanation of their interaction with one another directly reflects his more comprehensive understanding of cosmology and ontology, and therefore this aspect of his thought is less esoteric than it might initially seem.

Religion, Technology, And Modernization In Islamic Developing Countries: A Case Study Of Pakistan, Nizamuddin Syed

Graduate Research Papers

Pakistan is one of the Islamic developing countries, and since its independence in 1947 the leaders and administrators of this country have adopted different constitutions to pave the way for modernization. President Ayub Khan of Pakistan not only tried to change the traditional thinking of his countrymen, but also toured the Middle Eastern Islamic countries to urge a reformist revival in Islam (Abbott, 1968).

Religion, technologicalization, and modernization are elements of a controversial issue which has been brought un and discussed among the religious functionaries and polity of Pakistan. The issue is, what should be the role of Islam in …

A Survey History Of Islamic Da'wah And The Egyptian-Nigerian Connections, Luka T. Daniel Dec 1979

A Survey History Of Islamic Da'wah And The Egyptian-Nigerian Connections, Luka T. Daniel

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

For history sources, I have depended heavily on the relevant pieces of literature in my possession, on those of Loma Linda University, California, and of the University of Washington, Seattle, and on those in the Arab Republic of Egypt, particularly at Al-Azhar University, the American University at Cairo, and the British Consulate in Cairo. Further, I have had personal interviews with professors at Loma Linda and Seattle, and with Muslim and Christian scholars (clergy and laity) in Egypt and Nigeria.

Since this survey is more historical than sociological, and since Islamic da'wah is twelve to thirteen centuries older than sociological …
