The Doctrine Of The Church In Thomas Aquinas, Ernest B. Koenker May 1946

The Doctrine Of The Church In Thomas Aquinas, Ernest B. Koenker

Bachelor of Divinity

The dogmatic interpretation of the Church as it is found scattered throughout Thomas’ works is a presentation of a spiritual reality, the corpus Christi mysticum and the communio fidelium. The body of this thesis will show that the visible Church is the vehicle of God's supernatural, gracious activity among His creatures.

Frederich Conrad Dieterich Wyneken 1810-1876, Edward Saleska May 1946

Frederich Conrad Dieterich Wyneken 1810-1876, Edward Saleska

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

We believe that Wyneken may rightly be called "the nineteenth century patriarch of the American Lutheran Church” in the same measure in which Muehlenberg is recognized as such in the preceding century. It is the life, work and influence of this man of God which speaks to us from the pages of the past in this brief history, speaking as one of the organizers and founders, to his first love, a Church, which, by God's grace, celebrates its first centennial.

The Formative Years Of Doctor Luther, E. G. Schwiebert Apr 1946

The Formative Years Of Doctor Luther, E. G. Schwiebert

Concordia Theological Monthly

There can be no doubt that many of Martin Luther's contemporaries realized that he was one of the great men of history. Almost twenty years before he died, his friends began to collect the Reformer's letters and writings, while at different times twelve table companions recorded his conversations with the dinner guests. The three funeral addresses delivered at the time of Luther's death in 1546 testify to this same conviction. Since he had died in his native Eisleben, a service was first held there in the Andreas-Kirche, on which occasion Jonas, who had accompanied Luther on the journey from Wittenberg, …

The Developments Of Home Missions In North America, F. C. Streufert Feb 1946

The Developments Of Home Missions In North America, F. C. Streufert

Concordia Theological Monthly

As we look back upon the century of Synod's history that will soon be completed and think of the developments both in the history of our country and of our Church, we stand in wonderment. We marvel at the tremendous changes in every phase of activity, be it in the social, in the economic, in the political, or in the scientific field. It was a century that saw at its beginning the westward trek of the pioneer by oxcart and by covered wagon and at the close the use of the streamlined train, the auto, the airplane, the radio, and …

Kenotic Ignorance Or Accommodation, P. E. Kretzmann Jan 1946

Kenotic Ignorance Or Accommodation, P. E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

The term kenoticism fills the Lutheran theologian with apprehension, if not with horror. It is a term which has been used by our dogmaticians to designate the false teaching of the kenosis of Christ, one not in agreement with Phil. 2:7. From the days of Thomasius, who has been called the father of kenoticism, down through the writings of Luthardt, Gess, von Hofmann, Frank, and others, this insidious poison has been spread in modem theology until the point has been reached where errors concerning the person of Christ, and therefore also of His office, have vitiated the doctrine of the …

Religion In The Works Of Heinrich Heine, Ellen Frances Deruchie Jan 1946

Religion In The Works Of Heinrich Heine, Ellen Frances Deruchie

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The life of Heinrich Heine presents many contradictions. He was a militant Hebrew who never held to the tenets of the Jewish faith, a Christian who admired Jesus, but despised the dogmas of Christianity, a German who loved his country with all his heart but became a voluntary expatriate. In addition, he was a poet who could rise to the very heights or lyricism, but then offend his readers with an outburst of mockery or blasphemy. With a mind so tormented, and a character so complex, it is no wonder that his writings present so many conflicting views. Only one …

The Lord's Prayer, The Pastor's Prayer, G. H. Smukal Nov 1945

The Lord's Prayer, The Pastor's Prayer, G. H. Smukal

Concordia Theological Monthly

Jesus acknowledges the existence of evil and the reality of deliverance from it. Since the Father is to be implored, it follows that there is deliverance with Him and that He is not involved in, but ever opposed to, the evil. The Deliverer is mightier than the evil. This petition would have no purpose if His children were not exposed to the evil, to its influences and effects. Jesus introduces three factors: the Father, His children, and the evil. The evil is aggressive, God's children are endangered, and the Father is the Defender and Deliverer.

Trends And Tendencies Of The Times, Arnold Guebert Nov 1945

Trends And Tendencies Of The Times, Arnold Guebert

Concordia Theological Monthly

We tum now to a discussion of trends in the social and economic field. It has become almost a habit to refer to our times as a period of crisis or transition. Writers on social subjects invariably predict great changes in the entire structure of our society. An English economist recently summed up the situation in this way: "It is my profound conviction that we are standing today at the turning point between two civilizations, one of those turning-points in history not unlike the first or second century, the Renaissance, or the 17th century in England. The transition from an …

Trends And Tendencies Of The Times, A. Guebert

Concordia Theological Monthly

Ours is a complex civilization. Indeed it may be said that the world has never been as complex as it is today. There are in almost every field of human endeavor so many trends and tendencies that we would have material for many conferences if each of them were treated even briefly. We shall, therefore, limit ourselves to a treatment of such matters as seem to be of peculiar interest and significance at this time.

How To Deal With Cases Of Attempted Suicide, E. A. Duemling Sep 1945

How To Deal With Cases Of Attempted Suicide, E. A. Duemling

Concordia Theological Monthly

The problem of suicide or attempted suicide has so many aspects and such far-reaching implications that no short treatise can possibly cover all of them. A suicide is a person who, with premeditation, has deliberately terminated his life. An attempted suicide is an individual who has made an attempt at suicide, but has failed in the act. The subject is bound up with the values that the individual, the community, and the Church attach to life, with existing attitudes towards death, with racial habits and customs, with prevailing standards of life and the variations from such standards. Any attempt to …

The Lord's Prayer, The Pastor's Prayer, G. H. Smukal

Concordia Theological Monthly

While the etymological derivation may remain for years to come a matter of controversy, it is certain that ὲπιούσιος; does not denote a bread extraordinarily given. And thus we arrive at the old, familiar translation "daily." It is not a farfetched recommendation to pray the Matthew version in the morning devotion and the Luke version in the evening. However, we cannot pass on every occasion of prayer through the painful choice of the version to be used, for the day would end without our partaking of food.

Christian Fellowship, C. August Hardt Aug 1945

Christian Fellowship, C. August Hardt

Concordia Theological Monthly

After having dwelt at some length on the manifestations of Christian fellowship, we now come to consider restrictions upon such manifestations. Let us begin by stating the obvious: There are restrictions; not man-made, originating in the decrees of church councils or in synodical resolutions, to be sure, but imposed by God Himself, the Head of the Church. To us this may seem self-evident, yet it is not conceded by all who lay claim to the name "Christian." There are those who aver that Christian fellowship must be unrestricted.

Keeping The Doctrine Pure, J, H. Fritz Aug 1945

Keeping The Doctrine Pure, J, H. Fritz

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the year 1924 a book was published entitled Great Preachers As Seen by a Journalist. In closing the last chapter of the book the author said, ''I believe that the creeds within Protestantism are more shell-like and fragile than appears on the surface. Some of these ministers I have written about in this book were born in one creed and preach now in another. Ask me at the end of my work what conclusion stands out in my mind, and I must say, 'I have found plenty of signs that the Protestant Churches of America will one day be …
