Background For The Peasants' Revolt Of 1524, W. Theophil Janzow Sep 1951

Background For The Peasants' Revolt Of 1524, W. Theophil Janzow

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Peasants' Revolt of 1524 and its causes have been the subject of widespread controversy ever since the days of the revolt itself. Accusations against Dr. Martin Luther as the prime mover of the revolt have been prevalent especially in the literature of those who were otherwise displeased, yes, angered, by Luther's success as a religious reformer. But even historians whom one would judge to be unprejudiced by training or religious bias have pictured the Peasants' Revolt of 1524 as the natural result of Luther's sermons and books.

Missouri Synod Undertakes Foreign Missions, Herman H. Koppelmann Aug 1951

Missouri Synod Undertakes Foreign Missions, Herman H. Koppelmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

It was 1893, a depression year economically. But it was a great year within the Missouri Synod. At its triennial convention, Synod resolved to open two educational institutions, Concordia College of St. Paul, Minn., and a teachers' college in Nebraska. These were the first schools sponsored by Synod from their very inception. A consecrated Lutheran layman, J. P. Baden of Winfield, Kans., appropriated $50,000 toward the establishing of a college in the West. This became "St. John's English Lutheran College" of Winfield. Concordia Publishing House dedicated a new building on the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Miami Street. This had …

A Comprehensive Survey Of The Problems Of Old Age, Past And Present Solutions Offered For Them, And The Obligation Of The Church With Regard To Them, William Henry Lehmann Jr Jun 1951

A Comprehensive Survey Of The Problems Of Old Age, Past And Present Solutions Offered For Them, And The Obligation Of The Church With Regard To Them, William Henry Lehmann Jr

Bachelor of Divinity

Many secular agencies are delving into this problem. Instead of pointing the way as prophet, the church has been content to follow in the wake. The purpose of this thesis is to stimulate the church and its charitable agencies to find better more adequate means to care for the aged Christians. Insurance companies are aware of the increasing number of aged. Political parties are aware of the potential voting strength they have. The church must also be aware of their needs and requirements, and be prepared to fill them on a much grander scale than ever before.

An Examination And Refutation Of Mary Baker Eddy's Teaching On Marriage, Paul Ludwig Jr Jun 1951

An Examination And Refutation Of Mary Baker Eddy's Teaching On Marriage, Paul Ludwig Jr

Bachelor of Divinity

It may surprise most people to read in the official Church Manual of Christian Science these words, “If a Christian Scientist is to be married, the ceremony shall be performed by a clergyman who is legally authorized." Why does the Christian Science Church itself provide no marriage ceremony for its members, but insists that if they desire that estate they must be married by some authorized clergyman of another Church? Only through a study of Mrs. Eddy's teaching on marriage can the answer be found. But a study or Mrs. Eddy's teaching of marriage necessitates also an examination of her …

The Validity Of The Sociology Of Lutheranism Of Ernst Troeltsch, Eugene Brueggemann Jun 1951

The Validity Of The Sociology Of Lutheranism Of Ernst Troeltsch, Eugene Brueggemann

Bachelor of Divinity

It is not within the scope of this paper to treat the theology of Ernst Troeltsch in any kind of detail. Much less is it the intention of this study to pass judgment on his theology as a whole, except in the most general way, and on the basis of the judgment of others. But in order to make the review of his work The Social Teaching of the Christian Churches more understandable, and to provide a background for the critique of his sociology of Lutheranism, a few, paragraphs at the very beginning will be devoted to a rapid overview …
