Religion As The Integrating Principle In Education, Eugene F. Klug Dec 1957

Religion As The Integrating Principle In Education, Eugene F. Klug

Concordia Theological Monthly

D’ye think," asked Mr. Hennessey, "the college has much to do with the progress of the world?" - "D'ye think," parried Mr. Dooley, "it's the mill that makes the water run?" The stream of life in this old world goes steadily on, whether we have colleges or not. But the fact is, in spite of Mr. Dooley's skeptical cynicism, that the world would hardly be the same without them. These centers of human learning have played a major role in harnessing and developing the raw material of this world man, his mind, and his physical environment. Today especially these academic …

Some Aspects Of The Asian Situation And Their Significance For Training For Service To The Church, R. Pearce Beaver Nov 1957

Some Aspects Of The Asian Situation And Their Significance For Training For Service To The Church, R. Pearce Beaver

Concordia Theological Monthly

The revival of the ancient religions of Asia is one of the most important factors in the international situation which has developed since World War II. It may be regarded as part of a current worldwide revival of religion, or, on the other hand, there may be some ground to think that the Asian development stimulated a world movement. Religion is now more important as a factor in national and international affairs than has been the case for many centuries. The Asian churchmen, in the book Christianity and the Asian Revolution, state: "Nationalism imparts a new interpretation to religion. Instead …

A New Lexicon, Martin H. Franzmann Sep 1957

A New Lexicon, Martin H. Franzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

This is not to be a review of the new lexicon -is there such a thing as a "new" lexicon? The survey of New Testament lexicography from 1522 to 1957 given by the editors of this lexicon in their Introduction (pp. v-viii) shows how relative the term "new" is in this connection; lexicographers stand strictly in a succession. Much less is this to be a critical review. We shall have to leave critical reviews to men who are less bound up with this work, emotionally and otherwise, than we of The Lutheran Church- Missouri Synod are. It is hardly to …

Visitation Evangelism In American Churches, A. Karl Boehmke Aug 1957

Visitation Evangelism In American Churches, A. Karl Boehmke

Concordia Theological Monthly

Thirty-five years ago the term "visitation evangelism” had, in all probability, never been spoken. Today it is in common usage in nearly every major Protestant church body in America. The method of visitation evangelism is widely employed throughout the country. Some enthusiastic advocates anticipate its use in every city, village, and hamlet. With voice seldom raised and with methods far from spectacular, visitation evangelism has been instrumental in gathering large numbers of members into Protestant churches. It is estimated that in the past five years three million men and women have been trained in visitation evangelism. In large measure this …

Friction Points In Church-State Relations In The United States, Carl S. Meyer Jul 1957

Friction Points In Church-State Relations In The United States, Carl S. Meyer

Concordia Theological Monthly

The encroachments of aggressive churches, especially the Roman Catholic Church, and the voraciousness of power-hungry governmental agencies are dominant trends in church-state relations in the United States. Education remains the largest single area in which conflicts arc found. Augusta, Maine, and Hartford, Conn., can bear ample testimony to this fact. However, there are other aspects of the question. The conflicts touch family relations, race relations, labor relations. Conflict arises from a desire to promote social reform, as in Ohio by the demands of pastors for antigambling legislation.

Divine Healing As Defined By Thomas Wyatt, Leonard R. Kutscher Jun 1957

Divine Healing As Defined By Thomas Wyatt, Leonard R. Kutscher

Bachelor of Divinity

The problem reviewed in this study is as follows: what are the basic concepts and presuppositions upon which Thomas Wyatt builds his teaching of divine healing? The presentation of the problem will reveal to what extent Thomas Wyatt bases divine healing on Scriptural premises. It is an object of this study, furthermore, to take cognizance of the primary emphasis in Wyatt’s teaching. Just as justification by faith describes Lutheran theology, in the same way, an effort will be made to discover what the distinctive feature is in Thomas Wyatt’s teaching. The statement of the problem might be summarized in still …

Some Basic Principles Of Stewardship According To The Parables, Roland Grumm Jun 1957

Some Basic Principles Of Stewardship According To The Parables, Roland Grumm

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In speaking of stewardship, it must not be forgotten that Paul has given us a beautiful guide to Christian giving 1n the eighth and ninth chapters of Second Corinthians. In a practical manner the Apostle instructs these early Christians, and through them also us, in the basic principles and motives of the grace of giving. A study in these two chapters is quite rewarding.

Labor, Industry, And The Church, David S. Schuller Apr 1957

Labor, Industry, And The Church, David S. Schuller

Concordia Theological Monthly

The church stood amazed before the rising form of the industrial giant. Its size was frightening enough, but its two heads of unionism and management struck terror into her heart. The church felt she should say something to the monster. But then what could she say? It certainly didn't look like a membership prospect. And so the church pretended she didn't see it. But the church's heart continued to pound. And way down deep she felt guilty. She had a message - even for such two-headed giants. And she should be speaking.
