The Relationship Of Orthodoxy And Prejudice Among Seminary Students Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Donald Sorensen

Theses and Dissertations

Research of the relationship between orthodoxy and prejudice is not clear. Some studies report those who acknowledge church membership to be less tolerant than those who do not. Other investigators find either slight differences or no differences among the attitudes of members of different religions. Still others find important differences in acceptance of orthodox religious beliefs and attitudes toward minority groups.

Abraham Alonzo Kimball was born of Heber C. Kimball and his plural wife, Clarissa Cutler Kimball, in Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois on April 16, 1846. At this time the Mormons were being expelled from Nauvoo so young Abe was taken to Winter Quarters with the major portion of the Mormon refugees. Clarissa Cutler Kimball refused to come West with the Mormons. Instead, she took her young son to Iowa to join a break-off church founded by her father, Alpheus Cutler, called the True Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. 1. To see what Latter-day Saint youth feel are the important factors that lead to a successful marriage; how adequate they feel their knowledge is in these matters, and what source they feel they are receiving their education from.
2. To determine if there is any relationship between the Latter-day Saint youth's feeling of what factors are important to successful marriage, how adequate he feels his knowledge is about the factors, and what he feels is the main source of his knowledge about these factors.

A gap exists between the religious ideals of human behavior and the common practices of man. Considerable effort has been expended in attempts to discover how to teach men to behave in ways that would be acceptable to society and still satisfy the ideals of the various religions. This problem is one of the major concerns of religious education.

The purposes of this study were (1) to learn how many persons who were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were blind, (2) to determine the social and economic conditions of these blind members, and (3) to learn what the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has done to promote employment of blind members through its Welfare Program, and how this was accomplished.
