The Resurrection Of Our Lord Series C, Frederick A. Niedner Jr. Jan 1989

The Resurrection Of Our Lord Series C, Frederick A. Niedner Jr.

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

Luke's empty tomb story has several typically Lukan features. First, the scene has an aura of calm when compared to Mark's report that the women ran away frightened and dumbstruck, or Matthew's picture of the angel who comes and scares the soldiers to death. This same calmness was in evidence throughout Luke's passion narrative. Second, the two men whose clothing reminds the reader of the Transfiguration in Luke (9:29-30), and whose question to the women reminds the reader of the ascension scene in Acts (1:10-11), speak a message which is one of Luke's most consistent themes: "It was necessary …

The Historical Development Of Seventh-Day Adventist Eschatology 1884-1895, Roy Israel Mcgarrell

Dissertations

Problem and Purpose. The Millerite Movement foundered after the non-realization ofits expectation regarding the second advent of Christ in 1844. Of the groups that sprouted from the movement, the Seventh-day Adventist Church has grown globally in 145 years to become the largest and most influential. While Adventists kept key elements of the Millerite premillennialist eschatology, they added some unique features.

For example, they added: a sanctuary theology concerning Christ's mediatorial ministry and His work in a heavenly pre-advent judgment, the "third angel's message" (announced in Rev 14:12), and other teachings including the "latter rain," the "loud cry," health-reform, the seventh-day …

Easter arrived early this year. Only rarely does the festival come on its earliest possible date, March 22. (It last did so in 1818 and will not do so again until 2285.) But not uncommonly Easter comes toward the end of March; it was March 26 this year as it was in 1978 and 1967. It fell on March 25 in 1951.

(Excerpt)

Recently a Danish film was shown in theaters around the country called "Babette's Feast." The setting of the film is a small village in a remote section of Denmark where the people belong to a strict religious sect. Their life, their food, and their religious practice reflect the austerity of the surrounding land. The leader and founder of the sect is a widower with two daughters, both of whom are attractive and gifted. The story is about their lives and the life of the little community.

Training For Evangelism Among The Yorubas Of Nigeria, Joseph Adebisi Ola Jan 1989

Training For Evangelism Among The Yorubas Of Nigeria, Joseph Adebisi Ola

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. When the Seventh-day Adventist church came to Nigeria in 1914, the Yorubas were the first people exposed to the church's message; today, Yorubas are the least receptive to Adventism when compared to the growth of Adventism in other parts of the country. Urban development in Yorubaland today presents the greatest challenge to the church; Yorubas forming one-fifth of the 100 million people in Nigeria. Most converts among Yorubas are from other denominations, for traditional religionists seldom attend Adventist crusades and are never converted to the Adventist faith. Since evangelistic campaigns lack efficient coordination within the whole church, the responsibility …

Development Of A Coping Mechanism Seminar For Single Parents Within A Seventh-Day Adventist Context, Elliott Claude Osborne Jan 1989

Development Of A Coping Mechanism Seminar For Single Parents Within A Seventh-Day Adventist Context, Elliott Claude Osborne

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

One of the fastest growing groups in American society is the single-parent household. There are four areas of concern that single parents have identified repeatedly at the Juniper Avenue Seventh-day Adventist Church. It is the purpose of this study to address these concerns through the development and field testing of a seminar with suggested coping skills to aide single parents in rearing their children within a Christian environment.

Method

A questionnaire was developed to secure pertinent information to aide the researcher to ascertain the specific content to be included in the coping-skills seminar for single-parents. A syllabus was developed …

A Proposed Strategy For Evangelizing The Hindus Of The Republic Of Trinidad And Tobago, Wynall F. Kerr Jan 1989

A Proposed Strategy For Evangelizing The Hindus Of The Republic Of Trinidad And Tobago, Wynall F. Kerr

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Substantial investments been made in the evangelization of Hindus in Trinidad, but have resulted in little success. The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Trinidad has not yet developed a well-defined approach to assist pastors and laity in evangelizing Hindus. The purpose of this study was to develop a biblically informed strategy of evangelism that can be used in designing appropriate evangelistic methods.

Method

The New Testament and other selected literature have suggested a strategy and methods of evangelism that were used for evangelizing particular peoples or groups of people, and these might inform the mission of the Seventh- day Adventist …

Anti-Mormon Pamphleteering In Great Britain, 1837-1860, Craig L. Foster Jan 1989

Anti-Mormon Pamphleteering In Great Britain, 1837-1860, Craig L. Foster

Theses and Dissertations

The introduction of Mormonism into Great Britain was met with both success and resistence. The major form of British resistence to the Latter-day Saints was through the press. From the introduction of the Church into Great Britain in 1837 to 1860, numerous anti-Mormon pamphlets were published to discourage people from associating with what was considered to be a strange American sect.

The major themes of a number of these tracts have been analyzed in order to gain a better understanding of how the Mormons were perceived by the British. Some of the major themes included the evil character of Joseph …

Saints In The Secular City: A History Of The Los Angeles Stake, Chad M. Orton Jan 1989

Saints In The Secular City: A History Of The Los Angeles Stake, Chad M. Orton

Theses and Dissertations

Beginning in 1847 and continuing to the turn of the century, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) were encouraged to gather to Utah, where they formed communities seperated from the evils of the world around them. While Mormonism continues to be closely associated with Utah, in 1989 it is a world-wide church with nearly seven million members, most residing outside of Utah, and many of these in major urban areas. Nevertheless, few studies have been made of how the Church has developed outside of Utah.

When the Los Angeles Stake was organized in 1923, it …
