Nursing And Health Care Among Mormon Women: An Analysis Of The Relief Society Magazine, 1914-1930, Sarah Walker Barney
Theses and Dissertations
This descriptive study examined the nursing and health care activities of Mormon women in the pre-depression period of 1914 through 1930 through analysis of the official voice of the Relief Society, the Relief Society Magazine. Entries from the Relief Society Magazine that dealt with any nursing or health care topic were coded according to the themes they addressed. Five themes emerged: Nursing, faith, healing, women's health, children's health, and public health.
In each of the themes, the Relief Society Magazine showed that the members of the Relief Society recognized the health care problems of their communities and claimed responsibility …

Pus, Pox, Propaganda And Progress: The Compulsory Smallpox Vaccination Controversy In Utah, 1899-1901, Eric L. Bluth
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the compulsory smallpox vaccination controversy in Utah, 1899-1901. It looks at the two smallpox epidemics during 1899-1901 and follows the boards of health attempts to eradicate smallpox primarily by compelling the vaccination of school children.
Dr. Theodore B. Beatty, secretary of the State Board of Health, championed the effort to vaccinate all Utahns; however, the opposition led by Charles W. Penrose, editor of the Deseret Evening News, produced anti-compulsion and vaccination information which influenced Utahns to generally oppose vaccination. Consequently, the legislature passed an anti-compulsory vaccination statute over the governor's veto to annul the courts decision …

A Doctrinal Training Program Adapted To The Current Chinese Setting, Robert C. Wong
Doctor of Ministry Projects
China is a country with the largest population and second largest territory in the world. During the past millenniums she has not had a considerable Christian background, but was strongly influenced by Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. In addition, from 1949 to 1990, atheism and evolutionism have been rampant under the Communist regime. By God’s grace and power, and through His faithful children’s witness, the Chinese church (including the SDA church), though experiencing severe trials, has not only survived but thrived. Church membership has increased dramatically.

A Road Less Traveled: Soteriology In Islam, Brian Christopher Smith '93
Honors Projects
When constructing a general description for "soteriology," one must be aware of the potential scope of the term. The word "soteriology" means "doctrine of salvation" or "way of salvation." Generally understood, one can speak of "soteriologies" and imply that there is more than one way to understand salvation, more than one doctrine of salvation. It should be noted that all religious systems do not share a universal soteriology. If soteriology is not universally understood, how may one study it? A particular religious system may hold that its contentions are singularly veridical and that other understandings are false, while another religious …
"This Song" Conspicuous Poetry In Hebrew Prose, James W. Watts
"This Song" Conspicuous Poetry In Hebrew Prose, James W. Watts
Religion - All Scholarship
The Hebrew Bible contains many passages in which prose narrative surrounds conspicuous poetry. The various theoretical and practical difficulties in distinguishing Hebrew prose from verse in other texts do not negate this observation. Explicit genre labels often appear in both the prose frameworks and the beginnings of poems, telling readers that the genre and mode have changed. The interpretive problem then becomes, not whether this is verse, but why poetry appears precisely here. What does poetic expression accomplish that Hebrew prose narrative cannot or will not do?
Comparative study of conspicuous inset poetry suggests that Hebrew narratives use it to …

William Clarence (W. C.) White: His Relationship To Ellen G. White And Her Work, Jerry Moon
William Clarence (W. C.) White: His Relationship To Ellen G. White And Her Work, Jerry Moon
Dissertations
The topic. William Clarence White (1854-1937), third son of Seventh-day Adventist founders James and Ellen G. White, was for thirty-four years his mother's counselor, editor, and spokesman. He was alleged by some to stand in a manipulative relationship to his mother and her work, a charge she denied.
The purpose. The purpose of the study was to describe, analyze, and evaluate W. C. White's relationship to his mother and her work during her lifetime. This purpose required the development of a partial biographical sketch of W. C. White as a context for understanding his relationship to his mother.

This piece is not authoritative, definitely not! It is all wonderments, the sharing of puzzles and questions and then, from time to time, of wonder. That is why the real vehicle of such an essay is worship, that mysterious activity within the human which is from the beyond.

The Lotus Sūtra And The Rhetoric Of Legitimization In Eleventh-Century Japanese Buddhism, William E. Deal

Thia paper explores the “rhetoric of legitimation,” that is, the use of religious discourse based on an authoritative text in order to legitimate political and social agendas. Specifically, I will examine two eleventh-century Japanese works, the Hokke genki ÀTàz of the Buddhist monastic ascetics known as hokke hijiri ÀT¸, and the Eiga monogatari ¼P]B of lay Buddhist aristocrats (kizoku {Ÿ).

Hitting Evil From All Sides, Paul N. Anderson
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
Excerpt: "Evil is not inert. It stalks its prey as a lion seeking whom to devour (1 Peter 5:8). It harasses and molests its victims with healthdenying consequences. It accuses the brethren with self-defeating lies (Revelation 12:10). It opposes all that is good, lovely, and pure; and the furthering of the Kingdom of God hinges upon its being confronted effectively."
Section 76 As Literature In The Doctrine And Covenants, William H. Brugger
Section 76 As Literature In The Doctrine And Covenants, William H. Brugger
Theses and Dissertations
This project attempts to demonstrate the value of literary approaches to the Doctrine and Covenants, using a predominantly formalistic approach. To establish a foundation, the first chapter discusses the rich literary content of the Doctrine and Covenants, providing examples of the various literary genres represented in it, such as narrative, saga, parable, and poetry. The second chapter presents portions of Section 76 that contain features characteristic of Hebrew poetry, such as figures of speech and parallelism. The third chapter analyzes ways in which Section 76's poetic dimensions are illuminated by "The Vision," a 312-line poem attributed to Joseph Smith. The …
