Conversation In Nauvoo About The Corporeality Of God, Jacob Neusner Jan 1996

Conversation In Nauvoo About The Corporeality Of God, Jacob Neusner

BYU Studies

Religion scholar Jacob Neusner looks at the corporeal nature of God through the lens of Mormonism and Judaism. He addresses anthropomorphism and incarnation, and concludes that the way to know God is through “our relationship with him, not through our act of the incarnation of God in heart and mind and soul.” Neusner appreciates the powerful doctrine of God’s corporeality taught by the Prophet Joseph Smith in the 1842 King Follett Sermon, which says that men may converse with God “as one man converses with another.” He says, “In the formative documents of the Torah in its oral version, that …

Dissertations

Problem

There has been a concern by educational leaders of the Adventist church in the Asia Pacific Division that a number of parents of Seventh-day Adventist students choose to educate their children in non-Adventist primary and secondary schools. This study sought to determine if this concern is prevalent in Adventist colleges in Southeast Asia. To find answers to this concern the following questions were posed.

1. What methods do these colleges use to promote or recruit SDA students?

2. How do these colleges attract SDA students?

3. What special programs are in place in the colleges to retain SDA students? …

Maybe A Lawyer Can Be A Servant; If Not…, Thomas L. Shaffer Jan 1996

Maybe A Lawyer Can Be A Servant; If Not…, Thomas L. Shaffer

Journal Articles

Consider the way we American lawyers learn about the relationship between the church and the law: This grand constitutional and legal order we propose to serve is unfolded before us and built up in our minds and hearts; it comes to us out of multi-volume sets of course books, and, like the gods of Canaan, it comes to us as religious: Thomas Jefferson said America was God's New Israel; David Hoffman, the grandfather of legal ethics in America, spoke of the law as a temple and of us lawyers as priests who served in the temple; Law Day speakers commonly …

A Plan For Strengthening Expository Preaching By Korean Seventh-Day Adventist Pastors, Chongho Yang

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Adventist churches in Korea urgently need expository preaching to act as a counterbalance to the strong traditional emphasis on topical preaching. The greatest problem of preaching in Adventist churches of Korea seems to be a lack of biblical content. Complicating this is a widespread failure to correctly apply hermeneutical principles to biblical exposition.

Method

Two taped sermons preached by each of seven selected Seventh-day Adventist preachers in Korea were collected and analyzed in the light of the criteria established for authenthic expository preaching. The criteria were obtained from the review of biblical and current literature.

Results

It was found …

Assessing Modern Bankruptcy Law: An Example Of Justice, Veryl Victoria Miles

Scholarly Articles

The task undertaken in this article will be to consider how well modern bankruptcy law measures up to concepts of justice that have evolved from Catholic social thought. The application of Catholic social justice in the assessment of whether a law is "just" or "unjust" can be viewed as a rational progression in evaluating the quality of justice achieved under a law.

Dorothy Day Apologia For Faith After Marx, Sandra Yocum Mize Oct 1995

Dorothy Day Apologia For Faith After Marx, Sandra Yocum Mize

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

Dorothy Day has received a great deal of attention from contemporary scholars of U.S. Catholicism. This article makes a unique contribution to this growing literature by offering a close reading of Dorothy Day's autobiography, The Long Loneliness. The purpose is to highlight the narrative's integrity as a sustained argument in defense of Christian faith transformed by wrestling with the Marxist charge: religion is the opiate of the people. Day deserves credit for a daring approach to Catholic apologetics in the 1950s. The article presents the narrative as a dialectic between the personal and the political, the material and the spiritual, …
