The Influence Of The Hebrew-Jewish Wisdom Literature Upon The Gospels, Robert Allen Byerly Jan 1950

The Influence Of The Hebrew-Jewish Wisdom Literature Upon The Gospels, Robert Allen Byerly

It is my deep conviction that the Gospel takes on new meaning as we see its message in the light of its historical background. In this instance we are interested in the influence which the Wisdom Literature exerted upon the Gospel records.

Rhetoric In The New Testament: The Diction In Romans And Hebrews, Walter A. Jennrich Jul 1949

Rhetoric In The New Testament: The Diction In Romans And Hebrews, Walter A. Jennrich

Concordia Theological Monthly

Oratory, as a general term, is properly defined as the power to sway an audience by eloquent speech. As far as is known, the art of such effective public speaking was first studied and taught in Greece, where it was called rhetoric. One of the early teachers of rhetoric in this proper sense was Gorgias, the Greek sophist, who brought his art to Athens in 427 B. C. from his native city of Leontini in Sicily. He afterwards settled in Athens, where he continued the practice and teaching of rhetoric. Therefore it is generally agreed that Gorgias is the creator …

A Study Of Latin Words In The Greek New Testament, Esther Laverne Benjamin Jan 1949

A Study Of Latin Words In The Greek New Testament, Esther Laverne Benjamin

Graduate Thesis Collection

The primary purpose of this work is to call attention to the existence of Latin words in the Greek New Testament and to present an objective study of them. As a corollary to this study, the impact of Graeco-Roman culture upon Judea in terms of these words, their synonyms, and related words is pointed out. Glimpses of the background of the New Testament figures afforded through this study lend perspective to the New Testament pages.

Rhetoric In The New Testament, W. A. Jennrich May 1948

Rhetoric In The New Testament, W. A. Jennrich

Concordia Theological Monthly

It is a most natural and yet striking fact that the New Testament originally was written in Greek. This is striking because the literature of the Greek New Testament had its origin in a Hebrew background; it is natural because the Greek language was the Weltsprache in the century that gave birth to the New Testament.

The Beatitudes, Wilbur May May 1948

The Beatitudes, Wilbur May

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The goal of this thesis is to obtain a deeper insight into the true meaning of the Beatitudes as spoken by Christ almost two thousand years ago. We are fully aware of the fact that words are merely symbols for thoughts. However, the words are the means by which we grasp the thoughts which the speaker wished to give us. Therefore, we feel that perhaps the ·best method to obtain this deeper insight is by examining the individual words which Christ used. The immediate purpose of this examination of the individual words is to understand the individual words with the …

The Position Of Present Scholarship With Regard To The Hypothetical Document Designated As Logia Or "Q", Arno E. Krentz May 1947

The Position Of Present Scholarship With Regard To The Hypothetical Document Designated As Logia Or "Q", Arno E. Krentz

Bachelor of Divinity

One of' the perplexing problems in the field of New Testament Introduction is the relationship of the first three Gospels to each other. A careful reading of these Gospels rcvea1s that they are much alike and seem to have much in common. There are many similar or strikingly similar events in all three. Then, too, there are clearcut differences. The Evangelists who wrote these Gospels tell us nothing concerning how their writings were related to each other. Luke alone says something about how his Gospel came to be written. Apostolic testimony on these three Gospels is something unknown to us.

The Historical And Grammatical Interpretations Of John Chrysostom Evaualting On The Basis Of His Homilies On Romans, Paul Gerhardt Littmann May 1947

The Historical And Grammatical Interpretations Of John Chrysostom Evaualting On The Basis Of His Homilies On Romans, Paul Gerhardt Littmann

Bachelor of Divinity

In view of the fact that the School of Antioch made no little contribution to the history of interpretation and that its hermeneutical principles are relevant to current problems or the Church, a brief study of the historical and grammatical interpretation of John Chrysostom, the most successful representative of the School of Antioch, may be of some value to pastors who wish to preserve the Church from error and to present the Gospel of Christ in all its truth and power. It is the purpose of this paper, therefore, to outline the hermeneutical principles of John Chrysostom and to show …

The Formative Years Of Paul, Victor Harold Zwintscher May 1947

The Formative Years Of Paul, Victor Harold Zwintscher

Bachelor of Divinity

The aim the purpose of this paper will be to describe briefly the conditions and activities which influenced the Apostle Paul, during his formative years, in the preparation for becoming an ambassador of Jesus Christ. Since the actual historic facts concerning this period of the apostle's life are extremely limited, there is almost endless room for conjecture. However, in the absence of facts, the conjecture in this paper will be limited to the most logical and psychological possibilities.

The "Euaggelion" According To St Paul, Luther Meinzen May 1947

The "Euaggelion" According To St Paul, Luther Meinzen

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The supremacy of the Ε’υαδδε’λιον has not lost an iota of its importance to man, although centuries separate us from Paul. Despite attempts through the ages to destroy the Ε’υαδδε’λιον or to change it, it is still the power of God unto salvation that it always was. Controversies that have been waged over it have largely been the result of misunderstandings of the Ε’υαδδε’λιον. Therefore a study of this basic concept of Christianity and of theology of Paul is purposeful. It is the aim of this thesis to present the correct understanding of the term and to develop its implications.

The Minister And His Greek New Testament, Eric C. Malte Jan 1947

The Minister And His Greek New Testament, Eric C. Malte

Concordia Theological Monthly

Languages differ radically among themselves, but while each of the modern nations is proud of its mother tongue and will dispute its supremacy with any of the others, scholars and competent authorities are generally agreed in conceding that the classical Greek is in many ways superior to all its successors and the well-nigh perfect medium for the utterance of genius and the expression of thought. The Greek language is a remarkable one in many respects and possibly the most noteworthy product of the Greek nation.
