Heartland As Hinterland: The Mesoamerican Core And North American Periphery Of Book Of Mormon Geography, Mark Alan Wright
Heartland As Hinterland: The Mesoamerican Core And North American Periphery Of Book Of Mormon Geography, Mark Alan Wright
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
The best available evidence for the Book of Mormon continues to support a limited Mesoamerican model. However, Alma 63 indicates that there was a massive northward migration in the mid-first century bc. I argue that these north-bound immigrants spread out over the centuries and established settlements that were geographically distant from the core Nephite area, far beyond the scope of the text of the Book of Mormon. I introduce the Hinterland Hypothesis and argue that it can harmonize the Mesoamerican evidence for the Book of Mormon with Joseph Smith’s statements concerning Nephite and Lamanite material culture in North America. Archaeological …

John L. Sorenson’S Complete Legacy: Reviewing Mormon’S Codex, Brant A. Gardner, Mark Alan Wright
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Mormon’s Codex: An Ancient American Book is unquestionably a monument to an impressive career defending, defining, and explaining the Book of Mormon. John L. Sorenson has been for the New World setting of the Book of Mormon what Hugh Nibley was for the Old World setting. From his earliest 1952 publications using anthropology and geography to defend the Book of Mormon to the 2013 publication of Mormon’s Codex, Sorenson has been the dominant force in shaping scholarly discussions about the Book of Mormon in its New World setting.1 With an impressive 714 pages of text with footnotes, Mormon’s Codex is …

Sustaining The Brethren, Duane Boyce
Sustaining The Brethren, Duane Boyce
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Believing Latter-day Saints hold different views about what it means to sustain the presiding Brethren of the Church. In this article, I outline some considerations that might be kept in mind as members of the Church evaluate their views on this vital topic and the Lord’s admonition to sustain the Brethren by their faith, prayers, and actions.
Where In Cincinnati Was The Third Edition Of The Book Of Mormon Printed?, Chris Miasnik
Where In Cincinnati Was The Third Edition Of The Book Of Mormon Printed?, Chris Miasnik
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
The third edition of the Book of Mormon was stereotyped and printed in Cincinnati in 1840. The story of the Church’s printer, Ebenezer Robinson, accomplishing this mission has been available since 1883. What has remained a mystery is exactly where in Cincinnati this event took place; there is no plaque marking the spot, no walking tour pamphlet, no previous images, and its history contains conflicting documentation. This article will attempt to untangle the mystery by using old descriptions, maps of the area, and images. I also honor the printer, Edwin Shepard, whose metal and ink made this edition a reality.

“The Great And Terrible Judgments Of The Lord”: Destruction And Disaster In 3 Nephi And The Geology Of Mesoamerica, Neal Rappleye
“The Great And Terrible Judgments Of The Lord”: Destruction And Disaster In 3 Nephi And The Geology Of Mesoamerica, Neal Rappleye
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Over recent decades, several Latter-day Saint scholars and scientists have offered analysis and comparison to geologic events and the destruction recorded in 3 Nephi 8-9. Jerry Grover makes an important contribution to this literature as he provides background on geologic processes and phenomena, details the geologic features of the Tehuantepec region (Mesoamerica), and applies this information to not only the description of 3 Nephi 8-9, but other incidents in the Book of Mormon likely connected to geologic events. In doing so, Grover yields new insights into the narratives he examines, and adds clarity to geographic details that have been subject …
Moving Past: Making Space For Memory After The Boston Marathon Bombing, Austin Thomas Jacobs
Moving Past: Making Space For Memory After The Boston Marathon Bombing, Austin Thomas Jacobs
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
In the aftermath of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, visitors from across the US and the world descended on Boston to pay their respects to the three people who were killed and the more than 260 who were injured at the race's finish line. The public commemorated the tragedy in multiple and diffuse spaces, both physical and virtual. In recognition of this fact, I use the changing location of the spontaneous shrine as an organizing structure for this study, analyzing the memorialization in three "movements,” each of which corresponds to a physical relocation of the shrine itself in the weeks …
Chasing The ‘Hounds Of Hell’: Howard Thurman’S Jesus And The Disinherited As A Curriculum For Racial Justice And Reconciliation, Sandra Richards Mayo
Chasing The ‘Hounds Of Hell’: Howard Thurman’S Jesus And The Disinherited As A Curriculum For Racial Justice And Reconciliation, Sandra Richards Mayo
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
This essay explores the implications of the Trayvon Martin case for educators who must contend with the complexities of race in the context of schooling. With the assumption that race continues to function as an important category in social arrangements, this essay addresses the following questions: What is the role of race and racial stereotyping in educational disparities? How can educators work purposely toward a curriculum of racial justice and reconciliation? Drawing on the work of African American theologian and civil rights leader Howard Thurman, this essay argues that new approaches to social justice education should address both the extrapersonal …
Celestial Visits In The Scriptures, And A Plausible Mesoamerican Tradition, Diane E. Wirth
Celestial Visits In The Scriptures, And A Plausible Mesoamerican Tradition, Diane E. Wirth
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Scriptural accounts of celestial beings visiting the earth are abundant in both the Bible and the Book of Mormon. Whether a descending deity or angelic beings from celestial realms, they were often accompanied by clouds. In this paper a short analysis of the various types of clouds, including imitation clouds (incense), will be discussed. The relation between the phenomenon of supernatural beings, sometimes in clouds, may have had a great influence on descendants of Book of Mormon cultures. For these people, stories that were told from one generation to the next would have been considered ancient mythological lore. It may …

Place Of Crushing: The Literary Function Of Heshlon In Ether 13:25-31, Matthew L. Bowen, Pedro Olavarria
Place Of Crushing: The Literary Function Of Heshlon In Ether 13:25-31, Matthew L. Bowen, Pedro Olavarria
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
The name Heshlon, attested once (in Ether 13:28), as a toponym in the Book of Mormon most plausibly denotes “place of crushing.” The meaning of Heshlon thus becomes very significant in the context of Ether 13:25–31, which describes the crushing or enfeebling of Coriantumr’s armies and royal power. This meaning is also significant in the wider context of Moroni’s narrative of the Jaredites’ destruction. Fittingly, the name Heshlon itself serves as a literary turning point in a chiastic structure which describes the fateful reversal of Coriantumr’s individual fortunes and the worsening of the Jaredites’ collective fortunes. Perhaps Moroni, who witnessed …

Academic Library Core Collection For Celtic And Roman Religions In Roman Britain, Kim Woodring
Academic Library Core Collection For Celtic And Roman Religions In Roman Britain, Kim Woodring
ETSU Faculty Works
Presented here is a bibliography representing a core collection on the Celtic and Roman religion in Roman Britain. This religion, which was formed from the mixing of Celtic and Roman religions, was truly a new religion. It was formed from two powerful but different religions. The Celts believed in nature and the power it held within everything in their world. The Romans believed in the power of their pantheon of gods and goddesses. When these two factors merged it produced a religion unlike any other in the world during the Iron Age. This bibliography will list the resources to form …

The Church And Religious Persecution (Calvin Shorts), Kevin R. Den Dulk, Robert J. Joustra

So begins The Divine Comedy, a classic meditation on the Christian life, written by Dante Alighieri in the fourteenth century. Dante’s three images—a journey, a dark forest, and a perplexed pilgrim—still feel familiar today, don’t they? We can readily imagine our own lives as a series of journeys, not just the big journey from birth to death, but also all the little trips from home to school, from school to job, from place to place, from old friends to new. In fact, we often feel we are simultaneously on multiple journeys that tug us in diverse and sometimes opposing directions. …
Brazilian Adventist Women And Their Needs: Toward Theological-Missiological Education With An Initial Curriculum Proposal, Hanny Brcic Guzman
Brazilian Adventist Women And Their Needs: Toward Theological-Missiological Education With An Initial Curriculum Proposal, Hanny Brcic Guzman
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
Brazilian Adventist women have had limited access to theological-missiological education, partly because of a hierarchical, male-centered biblical interpretation of gender relations as applied to female teaching and learning experiences within the community of faith. Although the church intends to involve women in a kind of ministry that assumes a hierarchical paradigm, this remediative action is limited to motivation, outreach, and Christian piety.
Method
This theological-missiological non-formal curricular intervention provides access to theological education as well as role models for women in the church. It attempts to transform this restrictive scenario by the interpretation of the perspective and values of …
Hispanic Religious Outreach In The Upper U.S. South: Missionary Outreach, Strategies, And Institutional Praxis Among Mainstream Denominations, John Benitez
Theses and Dissertations--Geography
Hispanic religious ministry provides a way for long established mainstreams to stay afloat in the face of the demographic realities in the U.S. today. Unfortunately, the lack of literature, particularly in geography, precludes the examination of elements of contemporary Hispanic religious outreach, including such considerations as strategies, their effectiveness, and institutional praxis among mainstream religious denominations in the U.S.
Using a hybrid methodology that relies on several techniques, I examine Hispanic religious ministry in the Upper U.S. South, which geographers tell us is America’s newest Hispanic destination. I, thereby, develop and present here a case study to compare Hispanic religious …
Disrupting "Asian Religious Studies": Knowledge (Re)Production And The Co-Construction Of Religion In Singapore, Lily Kong
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
In this article, I begin with the position that knowledge production and reproduction is partial and situated. Through an examination of academic research on and teaching of religion in Singapore, I demonstrate how scholarly interventions at once re-present and conceal religion as experienced and lived. I posit that the partiality of such interventions is due to the influential official narrative about religion in Singapore, so that what is studied and taught reflects certain dimensions of religious life and religious-secular relations that dominate official discourse. In particular, through academic writing (and to a lesser extent, teaching), religion in Singapore is constructed …
Inheriting The Earth: Towards A Geotheology Of Matthew’S Narrative, Dorothy Jean Weaver
Inheriting The Earth: Towards A Geotheology Of Matthew’S Narrative, Dorothy Jean Weaver
The Journal of Inductive Biblical Studies
The claim of the Matthean Jesus that “the meek . . . will inherit the earth” (5:5) is unique to the Canonical Gospels and a claim that reflects Psalm 36:11(LXX). This essay examines Matt 5:5 alongside this biblical intertext and within its wider Matthean context to assess its significance within Matthew’s overall narrative. While ultimately “inheritance of the earth” awaits “the renewal of all things” (19:27), the Risen Jesus with “all authority in heaven and on earth” (28:18) calls his disciples to a worldwide mission to “all the nations” (28:19-20) that constitutes proleptically an “inheritance of the earth.”
Exploring Perceptions Of Care In Christian Teacher Education Communities: Toward A Faith-Informed Framework Of Care, Cathy Freytag
Exploring Perceptions Of Care In Christian Teacher Education Communities: Toward A Faith-Informed Framework Of Care, Cathy Freytag
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
During a recent sabbatical (spring 2013), the author investigated perceptions of care in a variety of teacher education programs at Christian colleges and universities across the United States and Canada. My purpose for engaging in this study was to ascertain whether there might be elements of care unique to teacher education programs at Christian institutions that reach beyond prevailing conceptions of care found in the feminist philosophical literature. In this article, I discuss prevalent views of care across sacred and secular lines, detail the research methodology employed in the current study, elaborate upon emergent themes and trends, propose a model …

The Christian Farmers Federation Of Ontario: Integrating Christian Principles With The Practicality Of Farming, Suzanne M. Armstrong
The Christian Farmers Federation Of Ontario: Integrating Christian Principles With The Practicality Of Farming, Suzanne M. Armstrong
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This thesis examines the Christian identity and characteristics of the Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario (CFFO), a general farm organization active in the diverse agricultural sector of Ontario, Canada. It highlights the intersection of religion and farming that emerged from interviews and participant observation within this group. The thesis probes what it means for them to be responsible Christian farmers in contemporary agriculture. Christian and secular scholars from three key areas of scholarship—Dutch immigration to Canada, agriculture of the middle or family farming, and Christian stewardship—help to contextualize their responses.
The CFFO was founded as a Dutch neo-Calvinist organization within …
The First Pontiff: Pope Damasus I And The Expansion Of The Roman Primacy, Thomas J. Mcintyre
The First Pontiff: Pope Damasus I And The Expansion Of The Roman Primacy, Thomas J. Mcintyre
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This purpose of this thesis is to examine the extent of the agency Pope Damasus I demonstrated in the expansion of papal primacy and exaltation of the Roman See. Damasus reigned as bishop of Rome from A.D. 366 until 384. To answer this question, the research for this thesis focuses on involvement, of Damasus in contemporary theological disputes, his appropriation of Roman geography and his Latin language initiatives, both liturgical and Scriptural. Research was conducted first by consulting primary sources. These included the writings of Damasus himself, particularly his epigraphs, as well as epistolary correspondence. A key component of the …
