Modern Psychiatry And The Bible, H. D. Mensing Aug 1937

Modern Psychiatry And The Bible, H. D. Mensing

Concordia Theological Monthly

A discussion of modem psychiatry and the Bible in the compass of our allotted space cannot pretend to be exhaustive, but must of necessity be a mere sketch, touching here and there the points that seem of special interest for our purpose. We shall, in fact, limit ourselves to the discussion of current technical terms and then, as we proceed, stop to examine some of the problems as they come within the sphere of our observation. The very nature of our subject-matter must preclude any dogmatic statements, except where a statement of Holy Scripture is not concerned; for psychology with …

The Amazing Mass Of Biblical Manuscripts, R. T. Du Brau Jul 1937

The Amazing Mass Of Biblical Manuscripts, R. T. Du Brau

Concordia Theological Monthly

This year of our Lord, 1937, bids fair to become the beginning of a third great period in the history of the Greek text of our Bible. Later generations of Bible-lovers will no doubt refer to this period of textual criticism as that of decipherment, transcription, and conservative comparison. True, this latter textual activity has been in progress for the last generation, but it becomes apparent with the wealth of material now on hand that only a modest beginning has been made. The century just ended, from 1838 to 1936, has resolved itself into an age of amazing discoveries of …

The Religion Of Alexander Pope, Helen A. Stapleton Jul 1937

The Religion Of Alexander Pope, Helen A. Stapleton

Bachelors’ Theses

At the time of Pope’s birth and during the early Eighteenth Century, many anti-Catholic laws were put into practice. It was a period of liberal thought on religion and attacks on revelation were discussed in the tavern, coffee¬ house and drawing room of the day. Men of letters and men high in religious circles gave their views in a liberal way. A certain group turned to Deistic beliefs. They were not fanatics, opposed to Christianity, but liked the conceit of challenging their neo-philosophic views against revelation. Bolingbroke, who was a great friend of Pope, was foremost in this set.

What The Liberal Theologian Thinks Of Verbal Inspiration, Th. Engelder Jun 1937

What The Liberal Theologian Thinks Of Verbal Inspiration, Th. Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

This is what J. S. Whale thinks: ''The modem man is not impressed by the mere citation of texts; he rightly wants to understand them, in their context. His very certainty that the Scriptures are the fount of divine wisdom - that it is indeed the Word of God which is spoken to him in the words of the Bible - has set him free from the bondage of the letter, the prison-house of verbal infallibility. It is no use shilly-shallying here; loyalty to truth in the shape of literary and historical criticism forbids it.

A History Of The Religious Press Of Milwaukee, Evelyn Steinbrecher May 1937

A History Of The Religious Press Of Milwaukee, Evelyn Steinbrecher

Bachelors’ Theses

The purpose or this thesis is to present a history of the religious press in Milwaukee. Through the religious press or this city is made articulate the growth and development of the various religious groups represented by the press and effected by it to the extent that the press is able to mold the thought and opinions of its constant readers. This thesis is not concentrated upon those ephemeral publications which came to life with the growth of Milwaukee and died before they had reached their literary maturity. It is concerned primarily with those religious presses operative today. Correlative with …

A History Of First Friends Church, Nellie S. Waterbury

Historical Quaker Books

Only a brief word of introduction need be written. First Friends Church of Cleveland has a history of genuine interest to many. The data which these pages contain could have been gathered, put into intelligible form, and made most valuable to the reader only by one intimately acquainted with the personalities and events of the years. Such a person has been found in the writer, Mrs. Nellie S. Waterbury. Her long membership and active interest in this meeting provide a background. of understanding of the events which the book sets forth. She is well fitted for her task by native …

The Problem Of Authority In The Theology Of Alexander Campbell, Kenneth E. Hartman Jan 1937

The Problem Of Authority In The Theology Of Alexander Campbell, Kenneth E. Hartman

Graduate Thesis Collection

The Bible and the Bible alone is the creed of "the Protestants" was an important statement. It startled the Protestant world, and eventually brought a reformation era into the thought and theology of the Protestants in America in the nineteenth century.
