Indulgences, Theo. Hoyer Mar 1934

Indulgences, Theo. Hoyer

Concordia Theological Monthly

"One of the stock charges against the Catholic Church is that she sells indulgences for money. First hurled by Luther against the Dominican friar John Tetzel, authorized by Leo X to preach indulgences, this charge has persisted to the present day. While Luther’s blunt assertion that 'Tetzcl sold grace for money at the highest price' has long since been disproven, the impression is still conveyed by many historians that the Church at least in the Middle Agee engaged in wholesale traffic in indulgences… In the minds of vast numbers of our non-Catholic fellow-citizens, the word indulgences stands as the symbol …

The Thorough Exegetical Study Of The Sermon Text The Conditio Sine Qua Non For Good Sermonizing, J. H. Fritz Mar 1934

The Thorough Exegetical Study Of The Sermon Text The Conditio Sine Qua Non For Good Sermonizing, J. H. Fritz

Concordia Theological Monthly

The questions, Shall the preacher use a text? and, Shall the preacher preach the Word of God? are not identical. The preacher should always preach the Word of God, but this he might do without the use of a sermon text. The use of a sermon text, however, has not only come to be an established custom, but there are good reasons for continuing this custom: it makes for bettor preaching.

Hebrew Prophecy A Unique Divine Bestowal;, W. A. Maier

Concordia Theological Monthly

In his recent book The Hebrew Literary Genius (Princeton University Press, 1933) Duncan Black MacDonald, professor emeritus of the Hartford Theological Seminary, presents a modernized revision of the widely heralded theory which finds in the early Arabic the prototype of Hebrew literature and Old Testament institutions. Dr. MacDonald, a leading Arabist of this generation and an honorary member of the Arab Academy of Damascus, has brought Wellhusen up to date, removed scientific archaisms from Robertson Smith, and in the light of more recent investigations has revised the details of Goldziher and of other professional Islamic studies.

The Argument Of St. Augustine's "Confessions", M. S. Sommer Mar 1934

The Argument Of St. Augustine's "Confessions", M. S. Sommer

Concordia Theological Monthly

The great religious classic of the centuries between Paul and Luther is Augustini Confessiones. The high valuation which was ever placed upon this book of Augustine's is attested by the many editions and translations of it which have issued from the presses. For brevity's sake we refrain from quoting the warm praise which Dr. Walther bestowed upon this work.

The Practical Application In The Sermon, E. J. Friedrich Mar 1934

The Practical Application In The Sermon, E. J. Friedrich

Concordia Theological Monthly

The practical application of the text is one of the most important features of the Christian sermon. In fact, it constitutes its distinctive characteristic, that element which distinguishes the sermon from all other religious discourses. This is what Spurgeon had in mind when he said: "Where the application begins, the sermon begins.''

Reflections On The Status Of Our Preaching, E. J. Freidrich Feb 1934

Reflections On The Status Of Our Preaching, E. J. Freidrich

Concordia Theological Monthly

While not a few of those who answered our questionnaire stated that our preparatory schools and seminaries cannot, at least not as a rule, be held responsible for poor preaching heard in our circles, the general opinion seems to be that the alarming symptoms evident in our pulpit work do "reflect in a measure upon the training received at our preparatory schools and seminaries."

Beginnings In Indianapolis, H. M. Zorn

In the mosaic of Missouri Synod history the story of the confessional Lutheranism in Indianapolis ought to be a stone, however small, of some interest. As so often, this story centers upon the spiritual development of one man.

The "New Creation" According To Is. 65, L. Aug. Heerboth Jan 1934

The "New Creation" According To Is. 65, L. Aug. Heerboth

Concordia Theological Monthly

"Behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; and the former shall not be remembered nor come into mind," Is. 65, 17. Of what kind of creation and of what time is the Lord speaking here? Does the "new creation" mean the Christian Church, which began when our Savior established the New Covenant through His redemptive work and the pouring out of the Holy Ghost, so that the "new creation" is a specific name for the New Testament Messianic kingdom? Or does it denote a certain period of Christ’s kingdom here on earth, the so-called millennium, a period of …

The Law Of Pardon For Sin As Reflected In The Records Of The New Testament, Charles V. Jones Jan 1934

The Law Of Pardon For Sin As Reflected In The Records Of The New Testament, Charles V. Jones

Graduate Thesis Collection

The following is an attempt to make an unbiased search in the records of the New Testament to determine, if possible, the order of the steps to be taken by a person seeking pardon for sin. No attempt is being made to substantiate any preconceived theory. The study was prompted by a desire to settle in my own mind, by an unprejudiced search through the records, the question concerning the Law of Pardon to which I had heard many varying answers.

A Comparative View Of The Evidence For The Place Of Composition Of The Imprisonment Epistles Of The Apostle Paul, E. Robert Andry

Graduate Thesis Collection

It is the position of the writer that the imprisonment epistles of Paul were written by the apostle some time during his three year stay in Ephesus. Though this view is comparatively new and has few adherents among New Testament students, yet in recent years it has been gaining more and more consideration and appreciation among those who critically study the situation.

The Ministry Of The Word In These Trying Times, K. Kretzschmar Nov 1933

The Ministry Of The Word In These Trying Times, K. Kretzschmar

Concordia Theological Monthly

Periods of adversity in the life of the Church and the world always involve a special challenge to the ministry of the Word. The present era of spiritual, social, and economic distress is no exception. Within the memory of the generation now living there has never been a general situation demanding more earnest attention, single-hearted concentration, and enlightened action on the part of God's ambassadors on earth than that created by the developments of these trying times.

Tertulliani "Apologeticum", M. S. Sommer Nov 1933

Tertulliani "Apologeticum", M. S. Sommer

Concordia Theological Monthly

Tertullian's Apologeticum is justly renowned. It is renowned because of its author, Tertullian, who because of the diction, style, extent, and time of his writings is recognized generally as the father of Church Latin. There is no doubt that later writers, among them men of such importance as St. Augustine, Ambrose, and Cyprian, were influenced by him. Of Cyprian it is said that be called Tertullian simply the teacher. And yet, important as all the writings of Tertullian are, many of them have now lost their claim to the attention of all except the specialist and the historian. But not …

Atheistic Diagnoses Of The Coming Age, W. H. Dau

Concordia Theological Monthly

There is on undefined fear working on the minds of good Christian people throughout the world in our day. The North American Republic has achieved notable success in a political way and has unquestionably decided the fortunes of the great World War. It has become a dominant factor in the world of industry, commerce, and finance. It is no longer a quasi-hermit nation on the Western Continent, separated by two great oceans from the rest of the world. but is to-day n world-power of the first magnitude, perhaps the determinant world-power, and her doings are warily watched, her counsel eagerly …
