Paul's Personality Traits- A Potent Factor In His Success As A Missionary, Edwin Wiebel May 1944

Paul's Personality Traits- A Potent Factor In His Success As A Missionary, Edwin Wiebel

Bachelor of Divinity

Many books have been written on the life of Paul and his Epistles, which treat the subject critically, historically, and exegetically. There are, however, only a few monographs in existence, which have as their central object a treatment of Paul's life in the light of his personality or which make an analysis of his character only. Hence, it is not in accordance with the purpose of this thesis, which it is hoped will meet the wants of the general reader interested in its subject, as well as satisfy the requirements of the Biblical student, to enter upon an elaborate criticism …

Celtic Chrisitinaity A Survey Of Its History And Influence, Gerald Schaus May 1944

Celtic Chrisitinaity A Survey Of Its History And Influence, Gerald Schaus

Bachelor of Divinity

In the light of thorough research in this field by outstanding historians, it would be a rather serious admission of a lack of completeness of historical study to hold with the old view, namely, that nothing factual is known about Celtic Christianity! Now this paper makes no, pretensions of being a comp1ete coverage of the history of Celtic Christianity, for that is impossible to do in a work of this length. The purpose, rather, is to present an overall picture of the labors of the Celtic Christians and to compare the Celtic Church with the Church of Rome.

The Doctrine Of The Atonement In New England Theology, Ralph Pomeroy May 1944

The Doctrine Of The Atonement In New England Theology, Ralph Pomeroy

Bachelor of Divinity

Our major concern in this thesis is the doctrine of the atonement in New England theology. However, what has gone before is essential to a proper understanding, not only of Edwards' views with regard to the atonement, but also of the men whom he influenced. We shall take up now the study of the doctrine of the atonement according to Edwards. For a proper comprehension of the doctrine, we shall consider it both from the development as suggested by Fisher, and also from the excellent and thorough consideration of the doctrine by Franks.

Justification In Article Iii Of The Formula Of Concord, John Meyer May 1944

Justification In Article Iii Of The Formula Of Concord, John Meyer

Bachelor of Divinity

The doctrine of justification is the article by which the Church stands or falls. It is, therefore, almost impossible to overstress its importance or to understress the danger of error in this most fundamental of all teachings. And so studying an error in the doctrine of justification is profitable for understanding and appreciating the true doctrine of Scripture in other points as well.

The Historicity And Significance Of Peter's Stay In Rome, Clarence Boye May 1944

The Historicity And Significance Of Peter's Stay In Rome, Clarence Boye

Bachelor of Divinity

However, the aim and purpose of this paper is not to present a biography or character sketch of this disciple of Christ, but to devote our attention to the latter years of his life, and more particularly to the question: "Did Peter visit Rome during the evening hours of his earthly pilgrimage?" We shall examine all the evidence at our disposal, meagre and controversial though it may be, and from this draw our deductions. Since, however, this question of Peter’s visit to Rome is the very "corner-stone" upon which the "greatest Christian body on Earth” stands or falls, we shall …

A History Of The Cithara Sanctorum (Tranoscius), Jaroslav Vajda May 1944

A History Of The Cithara Sanctorum (Tranoscius), Jaroslav Vajda

Bachelor of Divinity

It is evident from the bibliography of this thesis that there are no English references available on the subject of the Cithara Sanctorum. This is in itself an indication of the ignorance on the part of the English-speaking world concerning this phase of Christian hymnody. Even Julian's exhaustive Dictionary fails to mention the Cithara! It was necessary, therefore, to work entirely with Slovak and Bohemian sources generally. These are naturally secondary sources, with the exception of the two editions of the Cithara which contain most of the original edition's hymns in more or less altered form. A first-hand study will …

Christian Architecture And Art In The Service Of The Word, August Waechter May 1944

Christian Architecture And Art In The Service Of The Word, August Waechter

Bachelor of Divinity

We have stated our proposition, “Christian Architecture and Art in the service of the Word”, with a purpose .The arts can, and should , serve the Word. But the Word does not need them t o be powerful and effective. Although the Word is not irresistible, it is ·powerful and effective in itself , per se. Paul calls the Gospel "the power of God unto salvation., • Rom I, i6 and the writer of the Epistle to the Hebrews states emphatically: “The Word of God is quick and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing …

Background And Beginnings Of Organized Youth Work In The Missouri Synod, Henry E. Simon May 1944

Background And Beginnings Of Organized Youth Work In The Missouri Synod, Henry E. Simon

Bachelor of Divinity

So that the reader may more easily and more fully understand various details described in the following pages it seems· advisable to offer a few words in explanation, showing the development of this thesis. It will be noted that the first two chapters deal with ·the background •from which our youth societies began to emerge. We have endeavored to picture this background from the various writings and expressions gleaned from different early periodicals and books. Thus the LUTHERANER, DISTRICT SYNODICAL REPORTS, LEHRE UND WEHRE, and other writings up to the turn of the century were thoroughly scanned for any notices …

The Significance Of The New Testament Concept "In The Name", Herman Witzgall

Bachelor of Divinity

In the following pages I am presenting as clearly as possible the origin as well as the meaning of the New Testament formula "in the name" in the light of the most up-to-date research in the field of New Testament study. I am presenting what I believe to be the most plausible explanation. Further research by others may result in a more satisfactory solution.

New Testament Exegesis, Elmer Griesse May 1944

New Testament Exegesis, Elmer Griesse

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this treatise is, first of all, on the basis of Scripture, carefully to define the various gifts as they are listed in Romans 18, I Corinthians 12-14, and Ephesians 4; at the same time to note concrete examples of these gifts throughout the New Testament writings; secondly, to call attention to a few significant trends in history pertaining directly or indirectly to one or more of the spiritually gifts, and, finally, to state the basic principles which should guide us in our · present day evaluation of spiritual gifts.

The First Years Of Trinity Congregation Freistadt, Wisconsin, Roy A. Suelflow Apr 1944

The First Years Of Trinity Congregation Freistadt, Wisconsin, Roy A. Suelflow

Bachelor of Divinity

During the 17nth and 18nth centuries in Germany Pietism and Rationalism had been opposing the principles founded in the Reformation, which demanded a separation from error. Thus for a long time the Lutherans had kept themselves separate from the errors of the Reformed. Yet thru Pietism, which stressed the outward life instead of doctrine, and thru Rationalism, which set human reason above the revelation of God, this principle of Lutheranism was being undermined, and the punch was being taken out of Lutheran orthodoxy.

The Right And Wrong Of Private Judgment, Th. Engelder Apr 1944

The Right And Wrong Of Private Judgment, Th. Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

In his recent book Luther and His Work the Catholic writer Joseph Clayton says: "To this day Martin Luther is praised ... for bringing the gift of private judgment in faith and morals to all believers. On the other hand, among Catholics Luther is held in abhorrence as an apostate monk who drew countless souls into heresy and whole nations into schism; the evil of whose life has lived after him." According to Luther "No one, neither pope nor bishop, has any right to dictate to the individual Christian what he shall or shall not believe. . . The notion …

Circumcision And Baptism, F. R. Zucker Apr 1944

Circumcision And Baptism, F. R. Zucker

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Bible does not speak very frequently on the meaning or the purpose of Holy Baptism and less frequently on the meaning and the purpose of Circumcision, and still less on the mutual relation of the two sacraments or on a comparison of Circumcision with Baptism. What little the Bible has to say on the points could be quoted in very short time. (Col. 2:17; Heb.10:1.)

Harnack's Theological Positions, W. Arndt Apr 1944

Harnack's Theological Positions, W. Arndt

Concordia Theological Monthly

The inclusion of Adolf Harnack in this series of articles on epoch-making modern theological leaders who promoted error requires an explanation. Strictly speaking, he was not the founder of a school of theology. He did not teach a system of doctrine of his own. In him we are dealing with a church historian, and not with a dogmatician. Still, when the persons to be treated in this series were listed, it was felt that Harnack's name would have to be included because in the period extending from about 1895 to 1920 he was the most frequently mentioned theologian of Germany, …

The Biblical Concept Of The Soul According To Nephesh-Psyche, Paul Lessmann Apr 1944

The Biblical Concept Of The Soul According To Nephesh-Psyche, Paul Lessmann

Bachelor of Divinity

With this basis established we can well proceed with our discussion, and observe the multitudinous array of facts about the human soul--its origin, life, and destiny-- facts which are still ignored by the modern science of psychology. The Holy Bible is our foremost source; for here we have throughout the infallible word of God. He is the Creator of man; he can tell us most about his creature.

Ritschl's Theology, F. E. Mayer Mar 1944

Ritschl's Theology, F. E. Mayer

Concordia Theological Monthly

"Ritschlianism is the most highly developed form, that theological empiricism has yet taken." This is the claim of the former dean of the Methodist Boston University School of Theology, Professor Knudson. The majority of liberal theologians hail Ritschl as their champion, because the empirical method is the formal principle, the principium cognoscenti, of American liberal theology. Three German theologians are largely responsible for the wide acceptance of the empirical method in modern theology: Schleiennacher, Ritschl, Troeltsch. Schleiermacher is the father of the modern empirical method in theology.

Schleiermacher, His Theology And Influence., John Theodore Mueller Feb 1944

Schleiermacher, His Theology And Influence., John Theodore Mueller

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Editorial Committee of this periodical has planned a series of articles on leading theologians of modern times who in a preeminent way have influenced and molded theological thought. These essays are to supply the necessary background of the theology current in our time, are to be practical rather than scientific, and are to present the various theological systems in such a way that even the reader unacquainted with technical literature will gain a clear picture of their traits and significance. This objective imposes a limitation on the essayists compelling them to remain within a narrow scope; but this limitation …
