The Pictish Church, A Victim Of Garbled History, F. R. Webber Feb 1948

The Pictish Church, A Victim Of Garbled History, F. R. Webber

Concordia Theological Monthly

As Thomas Maclaughlin made clear almost a century ago the word "saint" in the early Gaelic language meant "missionary" and nothing more. The Celts were not in communion with Rome, and canonization was then unknown. St. Ninian, therefore, is not a man who has been canonized, but the Celts gave him that title to denote the fact that he was a missionary. Few men have been treated so shabbily by historians. Ninian was the great evangelical pioneer in the North of Europe, and certainly he was as great a man as St. Columba or St. Patrick; yet our leading reference …

Foreword, W. Arndt Jan 1948

Foreword, W. Arndt

Concordia Theological Monthly

This year, however, we shall take a different course; our approach to a study of some of the menacing evils will be indirect. The charge has been prominently made that liberalism has invaded the Missouri Synod. Whether the accusation is justified or not, we shall not now endeavor to determine; let each one settle the question with respect to himself before the forum of his conscience. Our intention is to look at liberalism itself, to clarify our views on that subject, and through such a discussion to furnish food for thought which will be of aid in our preparation for …

The Most Important Social Problem Of New Testament Times Slavery, E. C. Malte Jan 1948

The Most Important Social Problem Of New Testament Times Slavery, E. C. Malte

Concordia Theological Monthly

His letters to the Ephesians and Colossians contain explicit rules for the conduct of slaves and masters. Living in a society in which it is estimated that more than half of the population belonged to the slave class, it is little wonder that Paul often uses this word and its antonym, free man.

The Psychology Of Religious Edification As Applied To Children, Hazel Alta Oliver Jan 1948

The Psychology Of Religious Edification As Applied To Children, Hazel Alta Oliver

Graduate Thesis Collection

This dissertation is important for all Christians and especially for teachers in Bible School. It is not a theological study aiming to tell how to prepare souls for a world to come,-- though it does that incidentally, nor in that it adopts its premises from revelation. But it is theological insofar as it unifies all of religious education in one objective, purpose, goal or ideal. It is philosophical in the same sense, that it unifies all of religious education in one objective. It aims to simplify all the efforts of religious education which we here call edification of the saints, …
