Notes On Luther's Conception Of The Word Of God As The Means Of Grace, John Theodore Mueller Aug 1949

Notes On Luther's Conception Of The Word Of God As The Means Of Grace, John Theodore Mueller

Concordia Theological Monthly

Largely perhaps through Karl Barth's emphasis on the Wort Gottes, and especially through his admonition to theologians to return to the theology of the Reformation, the doctrine of the Word of God, particularly of the Word of God as it was conceived by Luther, has once more become the special object of theological interest. What Barthian and non-Barthian theologians have written on the point has not always been in accordance with traditional orthodox theology, but the study of Luther in recent years has no doubt contributed much valuable information toward clarifying most historical points and has led many toward a …

Rhetoric In The New Testament: The Diction In Romans And Hebrews, Walter A. Jennrich Jul 1949

Rhetoric In The New Testament: The Diction In Romans And Hebrews, Walter A. Jennrich

Concordia Theological Monthly

Oratory, as a general term, is properly defined as the power to sway an audience by eloquent speech. As far as is known, the art of such effective public speaking was first studied and taught in Greece, where it was called rhetoric. One of the early teachers of rhetoric in this proper sense was Gorgias, the Greek sophist, who brought his art to Athens in 427 B. C. from his native city of Leontini in Sicily. He afterwards settled in Athens, where he continued the practice and teaching of rhetoric. Therefore it is generally agreed that Gorgias is the creator …

Luther's Negotiations With The Hussites, Jaroslav Pelikan Jr. Jul 1949

Luther's Negotiations With The Hussites, Jaroslav Pelikan Jr.

Concordia Theological Monthly

As a result of contemporary efforts to bring about union within and between the existing Protestant communions, considerable attention is being devoted to the history of similar efforts in the past. The period of the Reformation remains a most fruitful source for a consideration of that history. For the Lutheran Church this means that an examination of the attitude and activity of Martin Luther in this problem is an important step in the determination of the distinctively Lutheran position in the matter.

Thomas Guthrie, Apostle To The Slums, F. R. Webber Jun 1949

Thomas Guthrie, Apostle To The Slums, F. R. Webber

Concordia Theological Monthly

Everybody is aware that Dr. Thomas Guthrie was one of the most noted pulpit orators of the nineteenth century, but the fact is often overlooked that most of his long life was devoted to congregational work in the worst of Edinburgh's slums. He built a spacious church there and a parochial school; and in that district his well-known sermons were preached. They fill most of the sixteen volumes of his collected works, and very few sermon books have enjoyed so large a circulation.

De Opere Spiritus Sancti, L. B. Buchheimer Jun 1949

De Opere Spiritus Sancti, L. B. Buchheimer

Concordia Theological Monthly

Article 5 of the Magna Charta of our Church bears the superscription "Of the Office of the Ministry." Specifically treated in Article XIV, it is here spoken of only in an incidental way, viz., as the office which is charged with administering the means of grace. Melanchthon wants to teach how faith is obtained, and that is through the operation of the Holy Spirit.

Jesuit Action In England, Lyle R. Mueller May 1949

Jesuit Action In England, Lyle R. Mueller

Bachelor of Divinity

JESUIT ACTION IN ENGLAND brings before us one of the most Interesting periods in the history of England, be it political or ecclesiastical. For it combines both classes of history into one interwoven pattern. It is not merely a recitation of cold facts, of days and times and events. But it is full of romance, intrigue, cunning, tragedy, courage, and suspense. This is the story of the birth of the Church of England, of its struggles in its infancy to establish itself in a world hostile to its innovations and determined to destroy it.

The Eucharistic Prayer- Its Use And Development, Henry C. Dequin May 1949

The Eucharistic Prayer- Its Use And Development, Henry C. Dequin

Bachelor of Divinity

The Eucharistic Prayer was originally the chief and only prayer in the liturgy; it was “the heart of the liturgy.” It derives its name from the fact that Christ “gave thanks" when He instituted the Lord's Supper. Thus it is a prayer of thanksgiving at the celebration of the Blessed Sacrament which states the meaning of the Eucharistic action, "Do this." "Since this prayer was originally ‘the' prayer, the only prayer in the whole rite. It was there that the whole meaning of the rite had to be stated, if it was to be put into words at all in …

The Early Quaker Doctrine Of Communion In The Light Of The New Testament, Mahlon Leroy Macy May 1949

The Early Quaker Doctrine Of Communion In The Light Of The New Testament, Mahlon Leroy Macy

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Anyone offering something new in theology, new in philosophy, or new in science is leaving himself open to criticism. An organization which sets forth a point of view contrary to the traditional point of view may receive much condemnation. This was the situation with the early Quakers. Their Biblical interpretation of the doctrine of Communion was unlike that of the traditional views; therefore, it was questioned.

The Epistemology Of Kierkegaard And Its Relation To Dogmatic Theology, Clifford L. Brueggemann May 1949

The Epistemology Of Kierkegaard And Its Relation To Dogmatic Theology, Clifford L. Brueggemann

Bachelor of Divinity

It is the presentation and analysis of this epistemological viewpoint to which this paper is dedicated. What does it mean to know the truth, the Christian truth? How is this truth apprehended? What are the implications of this position for Christian dogmatics? The scope of this paper therefore is broad, too broad, really for adequate treatment in a thesis of this size. The paper does, however, try to cover the more obvious phases of this problem, and also to present as much of the background of the problem and of the man as is necessary to gain a reliable insight …

St Paul's Use Of Military Terms In His Epistles, Robert A. Hobus May 1949

St Paul's Use Of Military Terms In His Epistles, Robert A. Hobus

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this thesis is not to show how Paul was influenced by the Gentile world into which he was born. The writer will not try to point out how the, intellectualism of· the Greeks and the materialism of the Romans influenced Paul in his theology. It will be taken as a positive premise in this thesis that Paul's theology was of divine origin, that his words were inspired words, that his teachings were from God instead of being a mixture of the best thoughts or philosophies that either of these civilizations produced. The fact that Paul was born …

Radio Biblical Drama, Darrell Duane Helmers May 1949

Radio Biblical Drama, Darrell Duane Helmers

Bachelor of Divinity

This study is concerned with only one phase of the Church’s use of radio, Radio Biblical Drama. By this is meant simply the dramatization of Bible Stories (episodes from the Bible), and the expansion of individual Biblical Texts. This study will not include the strictly moral or ethical stories which are based on Biblical principles, but only those stories which have their foundation in Christ as the Savior from sin and the Author of the New Life.

Essays On Sermonizing, John H. Fritz

Concordia Theological Monthly

When Jesus had called unto Him His twelve Apostles, He said, "As ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand," Matt.10:7. After having completed His work of the sinners' redemption and before He ascended to heaven, Jesus repeated His commission, saying, "Go ye into all the world, and preach the Gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved," Mark 16:15-16; "Ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you; and ye shall be witnesses unto Me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto …

Sermon Study On Is. 50:4-10, Theo. Laetsch Feb 1949

Sermon Study On Is. 50:4-10, Theo. Laetsch

Concordia Theological Monthly

On this passage August Pieper in his Kommentar ueber den zweiten. Teil des Propheten. Jesaias makes the following apt; remarks. “Vv. 4-9 consists of two subdivisions: vv. 4-6, vv. 7-9; the first speaks of the obedience of the Servant; the second, of the support granted Him by the Lord. This passage reads like a prelude to ch. 53. The obedient and suffering Servant of the Lord here states essentially the same facts concerning Himself that the Prophet states concerning Him in ch. 53.
