Brigham Cecil Gates: Composer, Director, Teacher Of Music, Lyneer Charles Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Every now and then, in the realms of science and art, we learn that some especially striking figure, who captures our attention, is from Utah. The achievements of the sons and daughters of the Utah pioneers reflect the substantial character of the work of the men and women who laid the foundation of Utah.

This foundation was composed of material gathered from every worthy purpose engulfing character and cultural expression of the people. Among other accomplishments, Utah has had a notable development in musical art. Her achievements have not been a result of extraordinary circumstances, but from the long and …

God's Concurrence In Human Action, John Theodore Mueller Dec 1951

God's Concurrence In Human Action, John Theodore Mueller

Concordia Theological Monthly

In presenting the doctrine of divine providence, the teachers of the Christian Church usually stress, in the first place, God's actual conservation of all created things, by which His creatures persist both in their being and their operation (in esse suo ac vi operandi). Should their categories at times appear as rather scholastic or academic, it is well to remember that they were endeavoring to clarify and preserve intact in its purity the somewhat mysterious Scripture doctrine of God's actual participation in creatural action against the two fundamental fallacies of erring human reason: fatalism and atheism.

Human Will In Bondage And Freedom, A Study In Luther's Distinction Of Law And Gospel. (Part Ii.), F. E. Mayer

Concordia Theological Monthly

"Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free" ( Gal. 5 :1 ). That is the sum and substance of St. Paul's letter to the Galatians. Christian liberty is Paul's one and only theme: the glorious liberty which has freed us from the tyrannical bondage under the Law, sin, death, the devil, and the wrath of God. This was also the heart and core of Luther's theology set forth in his Commentary on Galatians and especially in his treatise The Liberty of a Christian Man. The occasion for writing this tract is highly significant. The papal …

Brunner On Revelation, Robert Bertram Sep 1951

Brunner On Revelation, Robert Bertram

Concordia Theological Monthly

Professor Emil Brunner, the Reformed theologian at the University of Zurich, probably requires little introduction. He, more than any others of the so-called neo-orthodox theologians from Europe, has fast found his way into American Protestant theological thinking. his books seem to be showing up more and more frequently even in Lutheran parsonages, and his name has appeared a number of times in past issues of this very journal. This wide respect which Brunner enjoys is not undeserved. He has been considerably instrumental in encouraging Protestant theologians to return to the rock whence they were hewn, to the classical Christian doctrines …

The Moral And Spiritual Qualifications Of The Biblical Interpreter, Raymond F. Surburg Jul 1951

The Moral And Spiritual Qualifications Of The Biblical Interpreter, Raymond F. Surburg

Concordia Theological Monthly

The existence of many different Christian sects and denominations, although all purport to base their theological tenets on the Bible, has been a source of great perplexity to Christian and non-Christian students of the religious life of the past and present. While a number of reasons have been advanced for this situation, one of the underlying causes has been correctly stated by Burrows when he wrote: "Wrong methods of interpretation and use have prevented Christians hitherto from arriving at any unity in their understanding of the Scriptures."

Areas Of Agreement In The Three World Conferences On Faith And Order, John George Huber Jun 1951

Areas Of Agreement In The Three World Conferences On Faith And Order, John George Huber

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the areas of agreement which have been achieved by the three World Conferences on Faith and Order. Interest in this problem stems from two existential situations. The first lies in the fact that the church body with which the writer is affiliated, the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, is not an active participant in the so-called ecumenical movement, as that movement finds its expression in the World Council of Churches. The reasons for this position which are most frequently cited fall under the broad category of "doctrine.” This Lutheran body, along with the other …

The Words Of Institution- An Exegetical Study, Reuben A. Kruggel Jun 1951

The Words Of Institution- An Exegetical Study, Reuben A. Kruggel

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The words of institution for the Lord's Supper can be taken absolutely literally. The only words which require any interpretation are “body” and “blood." These can be interpreted only in the light of the concept of "communion.” On the basis of the text and in harmony with the Lutheran confessions this leads to three points, often called the Shibboleths of the doctrine.

Confirmation Instruction In The Light Of Adolescent Psychology, Donald Roth Jun 1951

Confirmation Instruction In The Light Of Adolescent Psychology, Donald Roth

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It was not the purpose of this study to deal with the liturgical aspects of the rite of confirmation itself but rather with the preparation and instruction that precedes confirmation. Generally, the confirmation instruction spoken of will be that practiced in the Lutheran Church, most often th.at practiced in the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod. However, much of the material was drawn and applies also to confirmation instruction in other church bodies and to similar practices in the non-liturgical churches.

New Testament Fellowship: A Study In Semantics, R. T. Du Brau May 1951

New Testament Fellowship: A Study In Semantics, R. T. Du Brau

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the seventeen passages of the New Testament which employ χοινωνία the associative idea is uppermost. One readily distinguishes three chief usages of the term: 1) a common sharing in all spiritual-and sometimes material-gifts; logically followed by 2) mutual help and assistance by association in contributory aid, all of which affects, and is effected by, 3) the existing intimate fellowship in the association as a divinely created and established communion of all believers in Christ.

The Authorship Of St. John's Gospel, Hugo Odeberg Apr 1951

The Authorship Of St. John's Gospel, Hugo Odeberg

Concordia Theological Monthly

Some New Testament books contain clear statements as to who wrote them. Oftentimes the author's name is mentioned at the beginning of the book. This is natural when it is an Epistle, for it is usual to specify in a letter both by whom it is written, and to whom it is sent. Most New Testament Epistles begin with the name of the sender and also mention the name or names of those to whom the Letter is addressed. The Epistle to the Galatians, for instance, opens with the author's name: "Paul, an Apostle ... to the churches of Galatia." …

A Concordance Study Of The Concept "Word Of God", Richard R. Caemmerer Mar 1951

A Concordance Study Of The Concept "Word Of God", Richard R. Caemmerer

Concordia Theological Monthly

The concept "Word of God" currently occupies a crucial position in theological discussion. At least two principal reasons are apparent for this situation. Both arise from the fact that the Sacred Scriptures of Old and New Testaments came under the fire of liberal higher criticism. Thereby the significance and content of these writings was called into question, and their reliability as revelation was impugned.
