An Analysis Of The Accounts Relating Joseph Smith's Early Visions, Paul R. Cheesman Jan 1965

An Analysis Of The Accounts Relating Joseph Smith's Early Visions, Paul R. Cheesman

Theses and Dissertations

Joseph Smith, prophet and founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints stated that when he was fourteen years old he had received a visitation from two members of the Godhead: the Father and the Son. He was alone when he went into the woods to pray, and was therefore the only witness to the manifestation of these personages. He also declared that when he was seventeen years old he was visited by an angel named Moroni. Again he was without witnesses. For a first-hand account of these two experiences we must rely on a single source, Joseph …

A History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Australia To 1900, John D. Hawkes Jan 1965

A History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Australia To 1900, John D. Hawkes

Theses and Dissertations

This work is a history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) in Australia to 1900. The first Latter-day Saint missionary to Australia was William Barret, a British convert who left directly from England and arrived at Adelaide, South Australia in 1840. In approximately 1841 Elder Andrew Anderson, also from England, arrived with his family at Sydney, New South Wales. These two Elders proselyted for the church, but the extent of their work is uncertain.

John Murdock and Charles Wandell were the first missionaries from Utah; they arrived at Sydney in October, 1851. The appointment of these …

A Comparison Of A Selected Group Of Lds Seminary Teachers In Relation To Nine Criteria For Measuring Religious Maturity, Gilbert W. Hull Jan 1965

A Comparison Of A Selected Group Of Lds Seminary Teachers In Relation To Nine Criteria For Measuring Religious Maturity, Gilbert W. Hull

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis was designed as a follow up of a study completed in 1959 which developed nine criteria for measuring religious maturity. The objective of this study was to develop a scale based on the nine criteria and administer it to seminary teachers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to explore the possibility of measuring differences in religious maturity. It was assumed that younger teachers who obtained a degree in a human behaviorally-oriented field of study would show the greatest level of religious maturity.

A Study Of Numinous Experience, Dama C. Cofield Jan 1965

A Study Of Numinous Experience, Dama C. Cofield

Graduate Thesis Collection

For the past ten years I have worked in the area of Christian education in an ecumenical context. This has afforded me the privilege of participating in many communities of faith as well as the challenge of ministry and leadership in diverse situations. These responsibilities, involving me in the lives and personalities of fellow human beings and the necessity of personal growth to meet the demands of my own life's situations have forced me to examine repeatedly the premises of my own faith and its relevance to life.

Mythical Criticism- An Evaluation Of Rudolf Bultmann, Robert Gutheil Jan 1965

Mythical Criticism- An Evaluation Of Rudolf Bultmann, Robert Gutheil

Master of Divinity Thesis

If Bultmann's own scholarly output has been prodigious, the theological dialogue which he has engendered has been overwhelming. A paper of this scope could not begin to assimilate all of the relevant material. It will be our specific purpose in the next few pages to outline the principle features of Bultmann's mythical criticism--his call for demythologization and his existential interpretation of the kerygma. Also, we shall briefly investigate the directions in which Bultmann's thought has been developed by his leading followers. We shall conclude with some general observations concerning the function of myth in literature and the validity of mythical …

A History Of Mormon Missionary Work With The Hopi, Navaho And Zuni Indians, David Kay Flake Jan 1965

A History Of Mormon Missionary Work With The Hopi, Navaho And Zuni Indians, David Kay Flake

Theses and Dissertations

Through their contacts with the Utes and other local tribes the Mormon people became aware of the presence of the Hopis, Navahos and Zunis soon after their arrival in the Great Salt Lake Valley in 1847. Their first actual contact with the Navahos occurred in connection with their Elk Mountain Indian Mission near what is now Moab, Utah, in 1855. During that same year another Indian mission was established in the Cedar City area called the Southern Indian Mission. As president of this mission in 1858, Jacob Hamblin led the first exploring-missionary party to the Hopi villages. Succeeding visits to …

Desert Journey: A Religious Dance-Drama And An Evaluation Of Its Effect On A Selected Latter-Day Saint Audience, Frank W. Hatch Jan 1965

Desert Journey: A Religious Dance-Drama And An Evaluation Of Its Effect On A Selected Latter-Day Saint Audience, Frank W. Hatch

Theses and Dissertations

The Holy scriptures abound in references to the use of dance as a means of worship. It would seem that there is a need to understand how present day members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints feel in regard to the kind of dancing referred to in the Scriptures.

This study will be concerned with the production of "Desert Journey," a religious dance-drama depicting an episode from the Book of Mormon. A record of "Desert Journey" will be made with a movement notation system adapted from Motation, an architectual movement notation system developed by Laurence Halprin of …

The Wasatch Front In 1869: A Geographical Description, Rodney Dale Griffin Jan 1965

The Wasatch Front In 1869: A Geographical Description, Rodney Dale Griffin

Theses and Dissertations

This study is a geographical description of a specific area at a particular point in history. The year 1869 was chosen for the study of the Wasatch Front because it is a datum point; something to work from. Following the completion of the transcontinental railroad at Promontory, Utah, on May 10, 1869, the typically Mormon society at the Wasatch Front oasis began to be more rapidly integrated to the cultural and economic influences from the East. A geographic study of this area in 1869 focuses attention on the nature of the Mormon civilization and more fully illuminates the effect of …

A Course Of Study In Modern Scripture For The Lds Church Schools Of The Pacific, Phillip Duane Harris Jan 1965

A Course Of Study In Modern Scripture For The Lds Church Schools Of The Pacific, Phillip Duane Harris

Theses and Dissertations

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has always possessed a vigorous concept of the value of education for its youth. Programs of religious instruction have encouraged the young people to further their understanding of religious concepts. In July, 1953, all of the Church educational institutions, except those in the islands of the Pacific, were combined into one organization and named The Unified Church School System. As of January 1, 1965 the Pacific Board of Education, which directed the Church schools in the Pacific Islands, was also incorporated into the aforementioned mother unit. One important department of continual research …

The Influence Of The Southern Nevada And Southern Utah Folklore Upon The Writings Of Dr. Juanita Brooks And Dr. Leroy R. Hafen, Pansy L. Hardy Jan 1965

The Influence Of The Southern Nevada And Southern Utah Folklore Upon The Writings Of Dr. Juanita Brooks And Dr. Leroy R. Hafen, Pansy L. Hardy

Theses and Dissertations

Since no writing is entirely objective, it is the contention of this thesis that Dr. Juanita Brooks and Dr. LeRoy R. Hafen, the most authoritative writers of the Southern Nevada and Southern Utah region, were greatly influenced in their writings by the folklore of the region and of the people. The two aspects of folklore which are most prominent in their writings are, first, those which treat the supernatural aspect of divine intervention, and, second, those which surround the struggle for survival.

Folklore stories of divine intervention include the lore of divine aid given in time of great need, divine …
