The Significance Of The Dogma Concerning Christ As Defined By The Council Of Chalcedon, Herbert J. Bouman Feb 1969

The Significance Of The Dogma Concerning Christ As Defined By The Council Of Chalcedon, Herbert J. Bouman

Concordia Theological Monthly

Jesus asked His disciples at Caesarea Philippi: "What do the people say about who I am? What do you say?" (cf. Matt.16:13-16). Jesus asked His enemies: "What do you think of the Christ? Whose son is he?" (Matt.22:42). The people, in turn, in perplexity and resentment asked Jesus: "Who do you claim to be?" (John 8:53). And when Saul of Tarsus was struck down near the city of Damascus and was confronted by the risen Lord, Saul's first question was: "Who are you, Lord?" (Acts 9:5)

The Congregation Of Christ-A Charismatic Body, Walter J. Bartling

Concordia Theological Monthly

My original assignment was a little vague. I knew I was to deal with the New Testament materials which treat in general with the subject of charismatic gifts. There would be other specialized presentations on specific gifts. It was not until I received a promotional brochure that I was given a formulated subject: “The Lordship of Jesus and Charisma for His Body." This formulation of the subject and the slogan for the conference, "Jesus is Lord," suddenly made it quite clear to me how I should approach my topic. There is really only one passage in the New Testament in …

"I feel very uneasy about the reading of the names of all the U.S. fatalities in Vietnam," observed Hazaiah Williams, black clergyman from Oakland. Rev. Williams was addressing a "moratorium" assembly in Valparaiso University's Chapel. He made the remark as the subdued voices of students continued the 24 hour-long recitations of names of the war dead.

The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod is endeavoring to take its verbal commitment to the concern of housing needs seriously. February 16 marks the day of a church-wide effort to gather a million dollar offering in a program called "Keys for Christ."

It all started in New York in 1967 when delegates of the church assembled in convention wanted to give substance to resolutions of earlier conventions that spoke more generally in this matter.

LHRAA's Board of Directors has scheduled its 1969 Institute on Human Relations for Chicago for the week-end of June 27 to 29.

The decision calls for moving the site of the Institute from Valparaiso University to the Lutheran School of Theology. The meetings will be on Chicago's South Side in a setting where the issues of racial and urban crisis are close at hand.

The entire format - and goals - of this year's Institute will differ greatly from previous years.

The History Of A Joint Catechism: Progress In India, Herbert M. Zorn Jan 1969

The History Of A Joint Catechism: Progress In India, Herbert M. Zorn

Concordia Theological Monthly

Efforts toward union have generally been characterized by emphasis either on "order" or "faith." To epitomize these emphases with the phrases "union first, agreement later" and "agreement first, union later" approaches caricature; but it does serve to indicate the direction in which each emphasis is headed. Both these emphases seem to partake of the same weakness, the supposition that the other side, somehow or other, will be taken care of. The "union first" supposes that agreement will grow out of union; "agreement first" supposes that a series of agreed propositions is going to take care of the organizational problems of …

The Christian World View And The New Era In Science, August C. Rehwaldt Jan 1969

The Christian World View And The New Era In Science, August C. Rehwaldt

Concordia Theological Monthly

The present article will concern itself chiefly with man's mastery over nature by means of the intellectual capacities which God has so lavishly bestowed on him and which God preserves even today, even though man has not fulfilled the intentions of God for the created world. It will also show that the vitiation of God's intentions and purposes for man and the created world is in the process of being resolved even now.

Four Correlations Of The Revelation Of God And The Witness Of God, Arthur M. Vincent Jan 1969

Four Correlations Of The Revelation Of God And The Witness Of God, Arthur M. Vincent

Concordia Theological Monthly

Christian scholars of many ages have often found "the revelation of God" and "the witness of God" among the major concepts needing study and application to their times. Modern theologians, under the influence especially of Karl Barth, have shown some of the depth and breadth of these topics. Now the Second Vatican Council with its pronouncements, including the Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation, has brought these subjects into the limelight for current consideration.

Someone estimated that America has 98 per cent of the world' s radios and 99.4 per cent of its televisions. 1 According to a study, the American family has the television receiver turned on thirty-four hours each week. The more surprising fact was that the families who spend the most time with television are the families who have had their sets the longest. 2 A survey of the Notion Pictures Association of America showed that the average high school graduate in this country has seen 500 films and watched 15,000 hours of television. Considering the fact that he has spent …
