New Testament Studies, Past And Present, Edgar Krentz Dec 1967

New Testament Studies, Past And Present, Edgar Krentz

Concordia Theological Monthly

The pastor who picks up a recent New Testament introduction or theology, a study of the Synoptic Gospels or Acts, or a history of New Testament times may well feel that for him the study of the New Testament has become an arcane and esoteric discipline. The questions asked about the Redaktionsgeschichte of a Gospel, the surprising frequency with which the term gnosis or Gnosticism appears in current literature, or the discussion in many circles of "incipient catholicism" may well lead him to suspect that the whole discipline has now changed.

Whole Education (Chapel Talk), Milo A. Rediger Nov 1967

Whole Education (Chapel Talk), Milo A. Rediger

Milo Rediger Writings & Addresses

A warning against some dangers, tendencies that can erode the quality and meaning of education. First, the danger of undue emphasis on science and technology. A second danger is in the rapidly growing impersonalism of higher education. A third is the danger of missing the real, though more intangible point - the development of taste, of judgment, of sensitivity. It is not enough to be free. It is a question of what you are free to do -- and what you are free not to do. What the college should provide is a climate, a fellowship in which these judgments …

The Early Success And Gradual Decline Of Lutheranism In England, 1520-1600, Basil Hall Oct 1967

The Early Success And Gradual Decline Of Lutheranism In England, 1520-1600, Basil Hall

Concordia Theological Monthly

This calendar was an unofficial enterprise intended to oppose the names of "Protestant saints" to those of "Popish saints" in the traditional calendars in Elizabethan use, and it cannot be taken to mean that a deep or ready sympathy existed for Lutheran doctrine and religious practices at that time. In fact it would be difficult to find an Elizabethan writer approving of Lutheran teachings and methods of worship and advocating them apart from those subjects which had become common to Protestantism, including justification by faith.

Psalms 2 And 110: A Comparison Of Exegetical Methods, Herbert Hohenstein Jun 1967

Psalms 2 And 110: A Comparison Of Exegetical Methods, Herbert Hohenstein

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

This investigation is prompted first of all by the controversy within the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod concerning the use of historical criticism as a legitimate method of interpreting the Bible. But it is also important to ascertain whether the method is strictly a classroom discipline or if the procedure has tangible benefits for the work of the Christian minister. If the method does assist one in understanding the theological message of the Biblical words, then its potential value for the parish pastor in his varied ministries is heightened.

The purpose of this investigation, therefore, is to determine if historical criticism contributes …

Notes On The Inerrancy Of Scripture, Robert Preus Jun 1967

Notes On The Inerrancy Of Scripture, Robert Preus

Concordia Theological Monthly

This study is o1fered as an approach to the problem of the inerrancy of Scripture as it concerns the Lutheran Church today. The attempt is to present a position that agrees with Scripture's testimony concerning itself and with the historic position of the Christian church. At the same time the attempt is made to be timely and to take into account contemporary issues raised by modern Biblical theology.

The Hermeneutical Problem And Preaching, V. C. Pfitzer Jun 1967

The Hermeneutical Problem And Preaching, V. C. Pfitzer

Concordia Theological Monthly

One is sometimes tempted to the thought that the theologian's work is often carried out not in obedience to the Great Commission of Matt. 28:19 f.: "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations … teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you," but rather in compliance with an unknown saying which might run: "Go ye therefore and discuss with all nations, … and make into problems whatsoever I have commanded you.” It is thus with some diffidence that I have left the word "problem" in the heading of this paper. But I do it for the following …

A Study Of Applications Used In The Sermons Of The Concordia Pulpit Of The Years 1955-1964, Erwin Kolb May 1967

A Study Of Applications Used In The Sermons Of The Concordia Pulpit Of The Years 1955-1964, Erwin Kolb

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The reason for the interest in undertaking a study in homiletics has two sources, which are, however, intimately related. The first source of interest grows out of a concern for the church and the second out of practical work as a pastor in that church. The first grows out of charges that the church is irrelevant, that its message and program are suited only to the stained glass shelter of its buildings, and the second from a desire to preach and teach a Gospel message which is relevant, timely, and effective. A further explanation of these two sources of interest, …

The Eschatological Significance Of Paul's Collection For Jerusalem, David Young May 1967

The Eschatological Significance Of Paul's Collection For Jerusalem, David Young

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Paul's collection has always been looked upon for its functional value. It relieved the needs of the Jerusalem poor, and it was an ecumenical venture embracing Jews and Gentiles. Other minor functional explanations have been suggested. Such explanations usually treat the collection as a small event in the history of the early church.

The scope of our investigation is devoted to the eschatological significance Paul attached to the project. Paul's understanding of the end-time seems to provide the only explanation that can justify the time and effort being spent on this matter. Our inquiry may be formulated as follows:

The …

The Jerusalem Bible: A Critical Examination, Frederick W. Danker Mar 1967

The Jerusalem Bible: A Critical Examination, Frederick W. Danker

Concordia Theological Monthly

The contents of The Jerusalem Bible (JB) are well known to the scholarly world through the French publication of the Dominican Biblical School in Jerusalem, which in 1956 published a one-volume edition of their studies of individual books of the Bible, popularly known as La Bible de Jerusalem. Because of the concern of the British translators that this work should represent the best of contemporary scholarship, attention was paid to the original Hebrew and Greek, with accent on fidelity to the most ancient sources and conformity to the demands of modern idiom, so far as this is possible in the …

Documentation: A Lutheran Stance Toward Contemporary Biblical Studies, Ctcr Feb 1967

Documentation: A Lutheran Stance Toward Contemporary Biblical Studies, Ctcr

Concordia Theological Monthly

When the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod instructed the Commission on Theology and Church Relations to "conduct a comprehensive study of Biblical hermeneutics" (1965 Proceedings, Res. 2-07, page 95), it did not thereby declare a moratorium on Biblical study and scholarship throughout the Synod. On the contrary, the church's scholars, wherever their calling finds them, as well as all other members of the church, are expected to continue their daily searching of the Scriptures as vigorously as ever. The special study assigned to the Commission on Theology and Church Relations is simply a part of and, hopefully, a useful contribution to the …

On Change In Theology, Martin H. Franzmann Jan 1967

On Change In Theology, Martin H. Franzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

This holds with special force for a confessional-conservative church which is, with good reason, appreciative of and jealous for its heritage; and such The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod is, thank God. The question "have we changed?" is charged with emotion, and at least one component of that emotion is one that must be honored and taken seriously: the clement of holy fear lest that one talent which is death to hide be lodged with us useless.
