The Asbury Journal

The use of “exile, alien, and stranger” language by New Testament writers in their descriptions of the church provides important insights into the appropriate self-understanding (identity) and the ultimate allegiance of Jesus’ followers. The lived experience of North Atlantic believers can make it hard to hear and internalize this apostolic language for the church; reading in the company of Majority World Christians can open up the possibility of deeper understanding and embodiment of these realities.

El uso del lenguaje de “exiliados, extranjeros y extraños” por los escritores del Nuevo Testamento en sus descripciones de la iglesia provee percepciones importantes para el auto-entendimiento (identidad) adecuado y la última lealtad de los seguidores de Jesús. La vivencia de los creyentes en el Atlántico del Norte puede dificultar su recepción e internalización de este lenguaje apostólico para la iglesia; leer en compañía con los cristianos del Mundo Mayoritario puede abrir la posibilidad para un entendimiento y una encarnación más profundos de estas realidades.

The history of a church is impossible to tell if the chronicles of its missions are ignored. It is the latter that give it life and continuity. This article aims to present a brief historical review of the development of the missions in the Church of the Nazarene in Cuba. We begin with Miss Leona Gardner, a North American missionary, who arrived on the island in 1902. Mark’s use of sighing/groaning language ([ἀνα-]στενάζω) in 7:34 and 8:12, when set alongside the LXX and other NT use of the terms, provides a powerful glimpse of the mystery of the Incarnation, as the Son of Man groans in solidarity with humanity and creation and the Son of God groans in concert with the Father and the Spirit in the eschatological work of liberation, healing, and restoration.

In Ecuador, most cases of widowhood correspond to women, many of these believers. Although I cannot prove that this is certain in all cases, my experience has shown me that many widows feel alone and unprotected at some point in their life. This article reflects on the biblical affirmation that God is close to the afflicted and the weary to strengthen them (Ps. 34:18; 73:26), and focuses on the feeling of loneliness that accompanies widowhood, doing this in light of the Word of God and my own personal experience. There seems to be a growing need for the spiritual care of the staff who have experienced trauma and acute stress. White and the lives and examples of Ruth, Abigail, and Esther. The expression ["at that time"] in Dan 12:1 is the last temporal expression of the predictive discourse of Dan 11:2–12:3. There is no consensus about the temporality of this expression. Thus, this dissertation seeks to answer the following question: What is the temporal frame of the phrase ["at that time"] is in Dan 12:1 according to the temporal indicators provided in the context of the predictive discourse of Dan 11:40–12:3?

Methodology

In the 1970s, the Seventh-day Adventist church’s theological struggles over righteousness by faith and perfectionism revealed that Adventists were confused about their Protestant identity and what it meant to have the assurance of salvation. That struggle is exemplified in Desmond Ford’s writings. His doctoral studies under evangelical scholar F. F. Bruce prompted the Historic Adventists to wonder whether Ford had abandoned the Arminian synergistic soteriology for Calvinism’s monergism.
