Foreword: Can The Lutheran Bodies Of America Get Together?, P. E. Kretzmann Jan 1933

Foreword: Can The Lutheran Bodies Of America Get Together?, P. E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

A layman writes to the Lutheran of October 6, 1932: ''Have enjoyed the series of four articles on 'Lutheran Union' as presented from four different viewpoints. However, your editorial remarks concerning the above were quite disappointing to me in as far as you do not seem to like 'free conferences.' How will we Lutherans ever get together if we refuse to confer with one another? Surely a free conference is a good beginning. Differences will crop out of course, but must be honestly faced by all. We Lutherans cannot unite by ignoring real differences. A mere church-government union will not …

Has Our Church A Quarrel With Science?, P E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

He who makes clear distinctions teaches well. So says the old Latin proverb. Or: He whose definitions are clear at the outset, will most likely succeed in presenting his subject in a convincing manner. Let us therefore begin with some definitions, in keeping with the wording of our topic.

The Modern Church Looks At Society, Th. Graebner May 1931

The Modern Church Looks At Society, Th. Graebner

Concordia Theological Monthly

The official papers of the Lambeth Conference have been published by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. The Lambeth Conference is a meeting of bishops of the Anglican Church and the Episcopalian bodies (including the American Protestant Episcopal Church) affiliated with it. The name is derived from the old palace overlooking the river Thames, owned by the Anglican State Church.

The New England Theology, Theodore Wuggazer Jr May 1930

The New England Theology, Theodore Wuggazer Jr

Bachelor of Divinity

In order to discuss intelligently the peculiar form which the Calvinistic Theology assumed in America, and to which it later developed, it obviously becomes necessary to set up a standard by which the American form of Calvinism is to be judged. It is the object of this paper to show, after a fashion, to what extent the theologians of New England of the 17th and 18th centuries deviated from Old Calvinism. For this purpose we must dwell briefly on the work of the Reformer, John Calvin, and on the chief tenets of the Calvinistic or Reformed Theology. In respect to …

The Christology Of Present-Day Moderniem, Herbert F. Glock May 1930

The Christology Of Present-Day Moderniem, Herbert F. Glock

Bachelor of Divinity

It is only because modernistic Christology has become stabilized that it can now be summarily treated. Our purpose, then, is to present those christological views which form the self-evident background of present-day Modernism. However, since the views of Modernism are established only by the consensus of opinion, and not by official pronouncement, a study of its Christology requires a review of the present-day modernistic works. We purpose to summarize, then, these views on the various phases of Christ's life, according to His Person, and His Work and Teachings. The sources for present-day Modernism are limited practically to the past twenty …

The Doctrinal Content Of Isaiah's Prophesy, Fred Kramer May 1927

The Doctrinal Content Of Isaiah's Prophesy, Fred Kramer

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this thesis is to show how much doctrine the Prophesy of Isaiah contains. The result of my studies shows that, with the exception of the doctrine of Baptism, and the Lord's Supper, every important doctrine of the Bible is found more or less complete in this wonderful book. Proof of this statement may be had in the thesis itself.

Mormonism And The Bible, Edwin G. Guebert May 1924

Mormonism And The Bible, Edwin G. Guebert

Bachelor of Divinity

The inception or Mormonism took place in 1830, when on the 6th of April of that year Joseph Smith Jr. organized the “Church of Jesus Christ or the Latter Day Saints" at Fayette, Seneca County, New York. In November of the same year Sidney Rigdon, a preacher of the Reformed Baptists or Campbellites at Mentor, Ohio, joined the new sect with the majority of his congregation. Since the West seemed to the Mormons to be the land of their future destiny, Smith and his followers moved in that direction and settled at Kirtland, Ohio. This took place in the year …

The Theology Of Israel (From Abraham To Moses), Leroy C. Rincker Jun 1923

The Theology Of Israel (From Abraham To Moses), Leroy C. Rincker

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

We have thus endeavored to present Israel's early conception of God. The critical theories have been· tried and found wanting. They are weak and instead of. going to the core of the matter• they harp on external details. At times we were grieved by the blasphemous assertions of men, who refuse to bend their way to embrace plain facts; then again the :naive and arbitrary interpretations of Gunkel and Goldziher have interested and amused us.
