The Tragedy Of Bangladesh, Stuart L. Dick Mar 1982

The Tragedy Of Bangladesh, Stuart L. Dick

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The deeply felt desire of the author for all those who read this account of the tragedy of Bangladesh is that this lesson may prove a blessing for those that have yet to experience tribulation on the earth. The Bible teaches all people will experience tribulation and the way to eterna. l life .is through tribulation (Acts 14:22). The prayer of the author is the non-Christian reader will be moved to consider the hope of salvation in Jesus Christ as the only hope of lost and needy people throughout the world. The tragedy of Bangladesh painfully demonstrates the truth of …

Black Elk Speaks As Epic And Ritual Attempt To Reverse History, Paul A. Olson Jan 1982

Black Elk Speaks As Epic And Ritual Attempt To Reverse History, Paul A. Olson

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Modern Siouan storytellers make a distinction in speaking of the difference between bedtime and sacred stories. Moreover, Lakota masters of the sacred arts are inveterate constructors of figural or allegorical systems. They interpret, apply, and reapply the iconological resources of their culture through ritual, myth, storytelling, symbolic action, and clothing. This Sioux symbolic tradition is one context in which John G. Neihardt's Black Elk Speaks (1932) must be understood. Conceptualizing it as an epic may assist both Western and non-Western readers to clarify the uses to which a culture's symbol system may be put in mediating conflicting values, especially those …

Christian-Buddhist Dialogue In The Writings Of Lynn A. De Silva, Tissa Brian De Alwis Jan 1982

Christian-Buddhist Dialogue In The Writings Of Lynn A. De Silva, Tissa Brian De Alwis

Dissertations

This dissertation studies the theological implications of inter-religious dialogue that call for resolution from the Christian standpoint, the Christian self-understanding in religiously plural context, and the essentials of authentic inter-religious dialogue by an analysis and evaluation of Lynn A. de Silva's dialogue with Sri Lankan Buddhism. Chapter I surveys the historical factors which heightened the encounter between the religions and describes the background from which De Silva's theology emerged. Developments in the debate on inter-religious dialogue in missionary conferences in Asia and in the World Council o f Churches reveal the confrontation between Asian and European theologies. It is shown …

Prolegomena To The Study Of Hegel's Philosophy Of Religion, Alan Borcherding Dec 1981

Prolegomena To The Study Of Hegel's Philosophy Of Religion, Alan Borcherding

Master of Divinity Thesis

This introduction is designed to aid a person with the desire to study the Hegelian philosophy of religion; it is not itself an introduction to his philosophy of religion (this ought to be obvious from the relative length of the early chapters and the relative brevity of the last two chapter0. It is hoped that three particular enemies of the reader in Hegel's philosophy can be overcome in this paper: the tracing of origins, the identification of main principles, and the vast literature.

Made, Not Born: The Church As Baptismal, Frank Quinn Dec 1981

Made, Not Born: The Church As Baptismal, Frank Quinn

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(excerpt)

An editorial in a recent issue of Time magazine notes that the real failures of the past decade have been future planners. Changing scripture slightly, the editorial states: The decade just ended left behind a great many fresh reminders of why prophets have always had difficulty winning honor on their own turf. 1 The decade just ended differed radically from the social, political and economic predictions made for it. The consequence of such failure is that only the fool plays the prophet in the 1980's. So, taking a lesson from the secular sphere, you will understand why I will …

A Strategy For The Lutheran Church-Hong Kong Synod To Fulfill The Great Commission Of Making Disciples, Yat Kwong Wong Mar 1981

A Strategy For The Lutheran Church-Hong Kong Synod To Fulfill The Great Commission Of Making Disciples, Yat Kwong Wong

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

There are three reasons for writing this thesis" "A Strategy for the Lutheran Church-Hong Kong Synod to Fulfill the Great Commission of Making Disciples. "

In the first place~ no one has evaluated the Hong Kong Synod in regard to church growth since it began thirty years ago. It is necessary to know whether our church in Hong Kong has grown effectively or not. Secondly, since no church on earth is prefect, a study such as this will help in identifying the weaknesses of the Hong Kong Synod as a first step toward improving it.

Finally, the author plans to …

Lon Fuller And Substantive Natural Law, Anthony D'Amato Jan 1981

Lon Fuller And Substantive Natural Law, Anthony D'Amato

Faculty Working Papers

I will contend that Fuller's secular or "procedural" natural law, as described by Moffat, does not cover the theoretical position that could be occupied by a substantive natural lawyer, that such a theoretical position is viable today, and that there are some key elements in Fuller's theory that actually conflict with substantive natural law and might therefore be criticized from that perspective.

Concepts In American Local History: Community In Winder, Idaho, Lorine S. Goodwin Jan 1981

Concepts In American Local History: Community In Winder, Idaho, Lorine S. Goodwin

Theses and Dissertations

Recently the need for a more clearly defined structural basis for American local history has become acute. Concepts used in national history often fall short of the needs of local history. As a result, both professionals and amateurs are producing a rash of community histories without the benefit of adequate guidelines.

This thesis draws together a number of concepts useful in the development of American local history as a viable academic field of study. It tests these concepts in presenting the history of community in Winder, a small, rural population set in southeastern Idaho.

Urban Evangelism In India: An Evangelistic Project Conducted In The City Of Poona, John Willmott Jan 1981

Urban Evangelism In India: An Evangelistic Project Conducted In The City Of Poona, John Willmott

Doctor of Ministry Projects

After two thousand years in its advent to India, Christianity still remains an unknown entity to the main core of the population. There are more than 3,000 cities and 550,000 villages in India with a population of 683,810,051 people. The urban development in India presents the greatest challenge to the church. It must discover ways of employing effective methods of evangelism to reach the massive population. Guidelines for evangelistic outreach in the cities of India were drawn from certain theological implications for evangelism under the headings: evangelistic priority, participation, incarnation, and proclamation. An actual evangelistic project was carried out in …
